BACKGROUND: Ormenis eriolepis Coss (Asteraceae) is an endemic Moroccan subspecies, traditionally named "Hellala" or "Fergoga". It's usually used for its hypoglycemic effect as well as for the treatment of stomacal pain. As far as we know, there is no scientific exploration of anti tumoral activity of Ormenis eriolepis extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this regard, we performed a screening of organic extracts and fractions in a panel of both hematological and solid cancer cell lines, to evaluate the potential in vitro anti tumoral activity and to elucidate the respective mechanisms that may be responsible for growth arrest and cell death induction...

Cyclodextrins are natural macrocyclic oligosaccharides able to form inclusion complexes with a wide variety of guests, affecting their physicochemical and pharmaceutical properties. In order to obtain an improvement of the bioavailability and solubility of 5-fluorouracil, a pyrimidine analogue used as chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of the colon, liver, and stomac cancers, the drug was complexed with alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin. The inclusion complexes were prepared in the solid state by kneading method and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffractometry...

Background: The risk of indoor air radon for lung cancer is well studied, but the risks of groundwater radon for both lung and stomach cancer are much less studied, and with mixed results. Methods: Geomasked and geocoded stomach and lung cancer cases in North Carolina from 1999 to 2009 were obtained from the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry. Models for the association with groundwater radon and multiple confounders were implemented at two scales: (i) an ecological model estimating cancer incidence rates at the census tract level; and (ii) a case-only logistic model estimating the odds that individual cancer cases are members of local cancer clusters...

UNLABELLED: In our clinical study postoperative peritonitis represent 17.01% by operations for neglected peritonitis. The other abdominal complications are eviscerations, postoperative oclusions and residual abscesses. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have to analize the incidence, etiology, diagnosis and surgical management of 25 cases by postoperative peritonitis which appears after operations of 147 cases by neglected peritonitis. The semiology of a postoperative peritonitis it is easy to recognize in young pacients with reactions which appear in a few days after operations : pain localised to the abdominal area well localised in an area in which palpation show contraction...

We have studied modifications of LDH isoenzymes pattern in normal human gastric mucosa as well as in adenocarcinoma and precancerous lesions of the stomac (gastritis and ulcer); samples from the injured and the surrounding non-injured area were examined, drawing up the isoenzymes, using Tris-buffer pH 7,4 at 4 degrees C and performing the determination within 1 h - because of the high chronolability of the fractions LDH and LDH by cellogol electrophoresis separation. We have always noticed - especially in samples from adenocarcinoma- a shifting toward the M chains, with a clear increase of the fractions LDH4 and LDH5; this has been noticed even in the surrounding non-injured area...

Sterol radioactivity was measured in the gastrointestinal tract of rats fed a semi-purified basal diet (B), either enriched with 0.5% cholesterol (CH) or containing 2% orotic acid (O). These measurements were taken after a fast of 48 h (CHF) or after fasting and 4-aminopyrazolopyrimidine (APP) treatment (CHFA); the five groups were killed 70 min after a subcutaneous injection of [1-14C]-acetate. Since these results agree with current published data, it is suggested that, although this method is not quantitative, it can give accurate estimates of the qualitative variations of cholesterogenesis in one organ...

The concept of PASK (Patient follow-up System of Kyushu University Hospital) has been innovated in order to manage clinical data of patients in the hospital-wide scope over long periods of time by using computers. PASK represents a collection of subsystems, each tuned to a specific disease. For the initial implementation, the subsystem for stomach cancer (STOMAC) was constructed according to the Cancer Center of Kyushu University Hospital project. STOMAC began to work in October 1984 and has proved effective...

The effect of toluene on the preference of ethanol was studied in rats. Toluene was administered orally by stomac tube in doses of 200, 400 or 800 mg/kg daily for 5 weeks or by inhalation at a concentration of 2000 p.p.m. 6 or 8 hr daily for 5 or 6 days per week for 2 weeks in rats of different age. During toluene inhalation exposure the rats had access to either tap water or ethanol-containing water (6 or 10%). After the exposure and during oral administration the rats had access to both ethanol-free and ethanol-containing water...

The purpose of this study is to report the early radiologic modifications observed among 72 patients operated for duodenal ulcer. Each patient has been subjected to a double control, the first eight days and the second eight weeks after the operation. The first transit permits to judge the efficacity and quality of the highly selective vagotomy and shows the permanent and transistory modifications of the cardia, the stomac, the duodenum and the small bowel; the second permits to study the condition of the ulcer...

Following abdomino-thoracical total gastrectomy and partial resection of the esophagus performed because of the presence of a stomac cancer located in the upper part of the organ an attempt was made to execute from a left sided thoracotomy an esophago-jejunostomy. During which it was found that the previously prepared loop of the jejunum was too short. The execution of a colon interposition in this particular operational state would have been too demanding on the patient; therefore the operation was concluded with a blind closure of the distal end of the esophagus and a jejunostomy (discussion of the resultant problems included in paper)...

The AA., after the nosographic, etiopathogenetic and clinical description of the "gastroptosic disease", give their findings of a functional and morphologic (gastroscopic and histologic) study accomplished over 200 patients with stomac tonus and/or stomac position disturbances. This study, confirming the numerous anomalies of the gastric-secretory function, especially of the hyposecretory and/or hypohydrochloric type, demonstrates the high incidence of the macro- and microscopic changes on the gastric mucosa...

In a clinical study we tested the following parameters: free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acid-base-balance, lactate, bilirubin, uric-acid, fructose, xylitole, glucose in blood and urine. The tests were executed in 9 patients who were undergoing stomac operations. The cardio pulmonary system of all patients was normal, and there was a homeostasis in water and electrolytes preoperatively. In combination with the amino-acids we received a ratio of 1:1:1 for glucose, levulose and xylitole. Totally, the patients received 0...

Numerical observations were made on the various steps of the cycle of Dipetalonema dessetae in Aedes aegypti: -- ingestion of microfilariae: the numbers of the ingested microfilariae correspond to a negative binomial distribution, but the over-dispersion is less important than in the Bancroft's filaria as observed by Pichon; in this last case the microfilariae are thicker and thus are more slowed in the capillari; -- crossing of the stomach wall: the "limitation" is caused by a precociously established stomacal barrier (2nd hour); however, this barrier is not perfect and allows some microfilariae to infiltrate; -- larval development and migration towards the head: in the well fed mosquitoes, all the microfilariae in the hemocoel reach the infective stage, but less rapidly in the heavily infected mosquitoes; 50 per cent of the microfilariae migrate towards the head, not depending with the level of infection...

Omental and gastric lymphangioma : a general review of cases and two personal cases. Lesser omentum tumors are rare. They exceptionnally arise from the stomach. Pathologic fractures : there are three types of lymphangioma simplex, cavernous and combined cystic ones. Microscopic examination shows that cysts are lined with endothelium and the wall is infiltrated by lymphocytes. Lymphangioma frequently occur in childhood (stomacal tumors excepted). Symptoms are those observed either in abdominal tumors, or in ascitis or in acute abdominal disease...
