multirresistant drug

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most frequent clinical problems in ICU with an elevated morbidity and costs associated with it, in addition to prolonged MV, ICU-length of stay (LOS) and hospital-length of stay. Current challenges in VAP management include the absence of a diagnostic gold standard; the lack of evidence regarding contamination vs. airway colonization vs. infection; and the increasing antibiotic resistance. We performed a Pubmed search of articles addressing the management of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)...

Methicillin -resistant Staphylocccus aureus (MRSA) and multirresistant entorococci are still problematic in nosocomial infections and new challenges have emerged for their containment. MRSA has increased the multiresistant profile; it has been described vancomycin and linezolid resistant isolates and isolates with decreased daptomycin susceptibility. Moreover, new clones (ST398) have emerged, initially associated with piggeries, and new mec variants (mecC) with livestock origin that escape to the detection with current molecular methods based on mecA gene have been detected...

INTRODUCTION: During the last two decades an increased incidence of infections caused by multiresistant bacteria has been observed. The spread of these microorganisms in the hospital is a major therapeutic and epidemiological problem. The aim of this study was to determine local resistance patterns of microorganisms causative of multirresistant infections in patients admitted to our hospital. METHODS: A retrospective study was designed, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from clinical and surveillance samples of patients admitted to the Hospital General La Mancha Centro, between June 2009 and May 2010...

BACKGROUND: In order to study the enzymatic carbapenem resistance mechanisms in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Argentina, we performed molecular characterization on 41 epidemiologically unrelated strains isolated from 1995 to 2006 with diminished susceptibilities to imipenem and meropenem. METHODOLOGY: Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were identified with the ARDRA technique. The total genomic DNA was used to detect each carbapenem beta-lactamase gene described so far in this species and those insertion sequences usually associated to carbapenem beta-lactamase genes (ISAba1, 2, 3, 4 and IS18) by the PCR technique with specific primers...

INTRODUCTION: In the last years, the increase of antibiotic resistances of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria is an important therapeutic problem. The antimicrobial activity of tigecycline, a novel glycylcycline, was evaluated against 750 bacterial isolates from 30 centers in Spain. METHODS: Multicenter and retrospective study. In 2005, thirty laboratories participated in this study. Data collected in this study included antimicrobial susceptibilities for S...

OBJECTIVES: Determining the frequency of antimicrobial resistance amongst bacterial isolates obtained from patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). METHODS: Study data relating to 2001 to 2003 regarding microbiological isolates was obtained from a laboratory network for the ICUs of 14 third-level hospitals in Bogotá belonging to the Bogotá Bacterial Resistance Control Group (BBRCG). 27,301 isolates were obtained and their susceptibility profiles were analysed using WHONET 5...

Transrectal prostate biopsy is the most accurate method for prostate cancer diagnosis. Although an antimicrobial prophylaxis is employed in most cases, infectious complications are among the most severe. We present a case of E. coli multirresistant meningitis after transrectal prostate biopsy despite quinolone prophylaxis.

The usefulness of plasmid profile analysis as a marker to determine the strain number of Shigella sonnei implicated in an epidemic outbreak and its prevalency in our community was studied. We could define two multirresistant strains and determine that the drug resistance was plasmid mediated in both. One strain carried a tra- plasmid which encoded (Sm, Sd)r, the other one carried two tra+ plasmids which encoded (Ap-Cb, Sm, Sd)r and (Sm, Km-Nm, Sd, Tp)r respectively. These strains and some coisolates collected during the later phase of the outbreak carried cryptic plasmids which showed similar electrophoretic mobilities...
