In this study, we aim to compare the progression-free survival (PFS) rates and side effects of induction chemotherapy based on docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil (TPF) versus cisplatin and fluorouracil (PF) in patients with locoregionally-advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma who received subsequent chemoradiotherapy. We randomly assigned 278 patients with stage III or IV NPC (without distant metastases) to receive either TPF or PF induction chemotherapy, followed by cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy every 3 weeks and intensity-modulated radiation therapy for 5 days per week...

Specific antibodies are essential for the immune detection of small molecule contaminants. In the present study, the heavy and light variable regions (V(H )and V(L)) of the immunoglobulin genes from a hybridoma secreting a chloramphenicol (CAP)-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) were cloned and sequenced. In addition, the light and heavy chains obtained from the monoclonal antibody were separated using SDS-PAGE and analyzed using Orbitrap mass spectrometry. The results of DNA sequencing and mass spectrometry analysis were compared, and the V(H) and V(L) chains specific for CAP were determined and used to construct a single-chain variable fragment (scFv)...

We reported the first case of thin endometrium patient with twin conceived via transdermal therapy during frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). The patient used Progynova administration to preparate endometrium in the first FET cycle. The endometrial thickness was 5.0 mm after 10 days of Progynova administration, the cycle was cancelled. In the second FET cycle, the transdermal therapy was used to support the endometrial development. The endometrial thickness reached 7.6 mm, two embryos were transferred on the day 4 of progesterone intramuscularly...

The reactions between methane and niobium oxide cluster cations were studied and compared to those employing vanadium oxides. Hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactions were identified over stoichiometric (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters for N as large as 14 with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The reactivity of (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters decreases as the N increases, and it is higher than that of (V 2O5)N(+) for N ≥ 4. Theoretical studies were conducted on (Nb2O5)N(+) (N = 2-6) by density functional calculations. HAA reactions on these clusters are all favorable thermodynamically and kinetically...

Epigallocatechin‑3‑gallate (EGCG) is an active and major constituent of green tea. As a non‑nucleoside inhibitor of DNA methylation, EGCG is able to inhibit the hypermethylation of newly synthesised DNA, resulting in the reversal of hypermethylation and recovery in expression of the silenced genes. Reversion‑inducing cysteine‑rich protein with Kazal motifs (RECK) is a novel tumour suppressor gene, which negatively regulates matrix metalloproteinases, and inhibits tumour invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis...

AIM: To investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of miR-451 to inhibit proliferation of esophageal carcinoma cell line EC9706. METHODS: Assays for cell growth, apoptosis and invasion were used to evaluate the effects of miR-451 expression on EC cells. Luciferase reporter and Western blot assays were used to test whether cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2D (CDKN2D) and MAP3K1 act as major targets of miR-451. RESULTS: The results showed that CDKN2D and MAP3K1 are direct targets of miR-451...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of the Water Conservancy Project of Poyang Lake after operation on Oncomelania hupensis snail habitats in 10 counties (cities or districts) around Poyang Lake. METHODS: The data of the distribution, numbers, areas, elevation and slope, etc. of snail infested marshlands on upstream of the project site in Poyang Lake were investigated and collected. Accordingly, the status of the submerged and flooding areas of the marshlands were analyzed and calculated respectively in the case that the project ran by different water regulation schemes at 14, 13, 12 m and 11 m levels...

Mainstream theories about decision-making under risk suggest that risky decisions are made by choosing the option that offers the highest mathematical expectation. The present event-related potentials (ERPs) study investigated the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying risky choice by contrasting a preferential choice task with an expected value choice task. The ERP data revealed that (1) the computational difficulty, which would be expected to influence a compensatory process, affected the slow wave only when participants were forced to choose the option with the highest expectation; and that (2) the difference in the minimum outcome dimension between two options, which would be expected to be influential in a heuristic process, affected the P300 and slow wave when participants were asked to choose the preferred option...

Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) (EC can act as a myofibril-bound serine proteinase (MBSP) inhibitor (MBSPI) in fish. In order to better understand the biological information of the GPI and its functional domain for inhibiting MBSP, the cDNA of GPI was cloned from crucian carp (Carassius carassius) with RT-PCR, nested-PCR and 3'-RACE. The result of sequencing showed that the GPI cDNA had an open reading frame of 1662bp encoding 553 amino acid residues. After constructing and comparing the three-dimensional structures of GPI and MBSP, the middle fragment of crucian carp GPI (GPI-M) was predicted as a functional domain for inhibiting MBSP...

BACKGROUND: Recently there has been a great deal of interest in the role of serum uric acid (SUA) in atrial fibrillation (AF). The objective of this study was to establish whether there is a relationship between levels of SUA and recurrence of paroxysmal AF after catheter ablation. METHODS: Three hundred and thirty patients diagnosed with paroxysmal AF were analyzed. Patients were categorized into quartiles on the basis of their pre-operative SUA measurement and follow-up, and Kaplan-Meier estimation with a Log-rank test was used for the analysis of the influence of SUA on the recurrence of AF...

Single, double, triple: Highly selective double H atom abstraction (HAA) from ethane and triple HAA from n-butane by AuNbO(3)(+) clusters have been characterized by mass spectrometry and DFT calculations. The multiple HAAs are initiated by oxygen-centered radicals and promoted by gold. The gold atoms act as electron acceptors during the triple HAAs and help to store a pair of valence electrons between Au and Nb atoms.

The present study was designed to evaluate the TGF-β/Smad signaling expressions in the patients with acute type A aortic dissection in comparison with those in the patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm and with coronary artery disease, and (or) the healthy subjects. METHODS: Consecutive surgical patients for acute type A aortic dissection (20 patients), aortic aneurysm (nine patients) or coronary artery disease (20 patients) were selected into this study...

Hyperoside (Hyp) is a flavonoid compound isolated from a folk remedy, Rhododendron ponticum L. leaves. It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects both in vivo and in vitro. However, little is known about the effects of Hyp on the neuronal apoptosis induced by glutamate. The present study showed that Hyp significantly attenuated, in a concentration-dependent manner, the apoptosis induced by the exposure of cultured neurons to NMDA. Western blot analysis revealed that Hyp antagonized the expression of excess NR2B-containing NMDA receptors; however, it had no effect on the expression of NR2A-containing NMDA receptors...

Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant tumor of bone arising from primitive bone-forming mesenchymal cells and accounts for approximately 60% of malignant bone tumors. Our comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) studies have identified frequent amplification at 6p12-p21, 12q13-q15, and 17p11.2 in osteosarcoma. Of these amplified regions, 6p12-p21 is particularly interesting because of its association with progression and poor prognosis in patients with osteosarcoma. In an attempt to identify aberrantly expressed gene(s) mapping to the 6p12-p21 amplicon, a region-specific array was generated using 108 overlapping BAC and P1 clones covering a 28...
