Lung needle biopsy can cause air to enter the vessels due to the traffic between the vessels and the trachea. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) according to the U.S. Navy Treatment Table (USNTT) 6 or 6A protocol is used for arterial gas embolism (AGE). However, no treatment or HBOT protocol for asymptomatic intra-arterial air has been established. Here we report two cases of asymptomatic intra-arterial air during lung needle biopsy that were preventively treated with HBOT according to the USNTT 5 protocol. In case 1, a 72-year-old man with malignant lymphoma in remission underwent computed tomography (CT)-guided lung needle biopsy of a nodule in his right lung...

INTRODUCTION: Cryoablation therapy for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is well established. A novel 28 mm cryoballoon system designed to operate under low pressure to safely reach a lower nadir temperature and maintain constant balloon size during cooling has not been prospectively studied in a large patient population for safety and efficacy. The FROZEN AF (NCT04133168) trial was an international multicenter, open-label, prospective, single-arm study on the safety and performance of a novel cryoballoon system for treatment of PAF...

Background Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a safe, minimally invasive angiographic procedure that effectively treats benign prostatic hyperplasia; however, PAE-related patient radiation exposure and associated risks are not completely understood. Purpose To quantify radiation dose and assess radiation-related adverse events in patients who underwent PAE at multiple centers. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included patients undergoing PAE for any indication performed by experienced operators at 10 high-volume international centers from January 2014 to May 2021...

Introduction: Intrapulmonary air-filled cavities, e.g., bullae, blebs, and cysts, are believed to contribute topulmonary barotrauma (PBT) and arterial gas embolism (AGE) in divers. However, literature is unclear about the prevalence of bullae in healthy adults, ranging from 2.3-33.8%. While this could in part be explained due to increasing quality of radiologic imaging, such as computed tomography (CT) scans, other methodological factors may also affect these findings. This study aims to ascertain the prevalence of bullae in young and healthy adults...

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) for the prevention of recurrent paradoxical thromboembolic events has been shown to be safe and effective in randomized controlled trials. However, it remains uncertain if differences in the structure and design of the occluder devices impact the outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare results of percutaneous PFO closure using 2 widely used double-disc occluders. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent percutaneous PFO closure with the Abbott Amplatzer occluder (APO) or the Occlutech Figulla-Flex-II occluder (OPO) at the Heart Center Lucerne between February 2017 and December 2022 were included in a registry...

BACKGROUND: Alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a serine protease inhibitor that serves as a counterbalance to the activity of elastases, e.g., neutrophil elastase in lung tissue. AAT deficiency (AATD) is a rare disorder usually arising from mutations to the SERPINA1 gene that codes for AAT. The most common AATD alleles are S and Z which produce ~ 40% and ~ 90% reductions in serum AAT, respectively. Rare genetic variants (> 500 identified) can also be associated with mild to severe AATD...

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac thrombus and vascular air embolism represent rare complications in the context of orthotopic liver transplantation. While isolated reports exist for intracardiac thrombus and vascular air embolism during orthotopic liver transplantation, this report presents the first documentation of their simultaneous occurrence in this surgical setting. Cerebral arterial air embolism (CAE), a rare subtype of air embolism, carries a 21% mortality rate. We present a unique case involving a 69-year-old female with a history of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) who suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA) due to CAE. Unlike typical cases, CAE in this instance resulted from spontaneous pneumothorax, not the more common iatrogenic causes. Adding complexity, an unexpected discovery emerged during evaluation: a patent foramen ovale, contributing to paradoxical embolism...

Land surface temperature is predicted to increase by 0.2 °C per decade due to climate change although with considerable regional variability, and heatwaves are predicted to increase markedly in the future. These changes will affect where crops can be grown in the future. Understanding the thermal limits of plant physiological functioning and how flexible such limits are is thus important. Here we report on measurements of a core foliar thermotolerance trait, T50, defined as the temperature at which the maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of photosystem II declines by 50%, across nine different Malaysian Hevea brasiliensis clones...

After eight years, a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a recurrent lesion at the biliojejunal anastomosis, and a biliary stent was placed for obstructive cholangitis in the right posterior segment of the liver. A right hepatectomy was planned for a local recurrent lesion;thus, percutaneous transhepatic portal embolization was performed on the portal vein's right branch to enlarge the left liver...

The dural venous sinus (DVS) is a thin-walled blood channel composed of dura mater that is susceptible to injury during common neurosurgical approaches. DVS injuries are highly underreported, which is reflected by a lack of literature on the topic. Neurosurgeons should be familiar with appropriate techniques to successfully repair an injured DVS and prevent associated complications. This study presents a literature review on the surgical techniques for DVS repair after DVS injury during common neurosurgical approaches...

Lung biopsy is an important interventional radiology procedure allowing the characterization of lesions with suspected malignancy. The most frequent complications are pneumothorax and hemorrhage. Air embolism is a rare but potentially fatal occurrence. In this case report, we present an air embolism after core needle CT-guided biopsy showing CT and MRI features that radiologists should expect in the everyday clinical practice.
