Furofuran lignanes show important biological activities for the treatment of infectious diseases, inflammatory and metabolic pathologies. They have been isolated from leaves and barks of many plants. In Chile the native conifer Araucaria araucana produces eudesmin, matairesinol, secoisolariciresinol and lariciresinol in stemwood, branchwood and knotwood. These compounds were previously isolated by laborious flash chromatography on silica gel. Here we report the easy isolation of eudesmin by soxhlet extraction from milled knots of Araucaria araucana with hexane, followed by cryo-crystallization at -20 °C...

Based on molecular docking studies on the ERα, a series of lignan derivatives ( 3 - 16 ) were designed and semisynthesized from the natural dibenzylbutyrolactones bursehernin ( 1 ) and matairesinol dimethyl ether ( 2 ). To examine their estrogenic and antiestrogenic potencies, the effects of these compounds on estrogen receptor element (ERE)-driven reporter gene expression and viability in human ER+ breast cancer cells were evaluated. Lignan compounds induced ERE-driven reporter gene expression with very low potency as compared with the pure agonist E2...

Lignans, a group of polyphenols, have been identified in eight cold pressed oils from fruits, nuts, and seeds, retrieved from the Brazilian market. The oils under investigation were avocado, Brazilian nut, canola, coconut, grapeseed, macadamia, palm, and pequi. Olive oil was selected as a reference oil, since numerous data on its lignan content are available in literature. The qualitative and quantitative profiles were obtained, after extraction, by means of UFLC-ESI-MS/MS analyses. The total lignan content showed a high variability, ranging from 0...

The asymmetric total synthesis of four lignans, dimethylmatairesinol, matairesinol, (-)-niranthin, and (+)-niranthin has been achieved using reductive ring-opening of cyclopropanes. Moreover, we performed bioassays of the synthesized (+)- and (-)-niranthins using hepatitis B and influenza viruses, which revealed the relationship between the enantiomeric structure and the anti-viral activity of niranthin.

Greenhouse gases emission from livestock is the major concern for the ecosystem. Despite the lower contribution of non-ruminants towards greenhouse gas emission as compared to the ruminants, the emission of methane (CH4 ) gas from equines is expected to be increased in future due to its increasing population. Thus, it is essential to find or screen potential anti-methanogenic agent in a cost-effective and quicker manner. Considering this, the present investigation was aimed to analyze anti-methanogenic characteristic of bioactive compounds of safflower oil by targeting methanogenesis catalyzing enzyme i...

Brain injury is a familiar complication of severe sepsis, in which excessive inflammation and oxidative stress are the main mechanisms leading to acute brain injury. Here, we focus on probing the function and mechanism of Matairesinol (Mat) in sepsis-mediated brain injury. We established a rat sepsis model by cecal ligation and perforation (CLP) and constructed an in vitro sepsis model by treating neurons and microglia with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Rats and cells were treated with varying concentrations of Mat, and the changes of neural function, neuronal apoptosis, microglial activation, neuroinflammation and the expression of oxidative stress factors in brain tissues were examined...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1 µmol/l zearalenone (ZEN) and 1 µmol/l matairesinol (MAT), alone or in combination, on the morphology of in vitro-cultured ovarian preantral follicles. Ovaries from four adult sheep were collected at a local slaughterhouse and fragmented, and the ovarian pieces were submitted to in vitro culture for 3 days in the presence or absence of the test compounds. The morphology of primordial and primary follicles was impaired by ZEN. The plant lignan MAT alone did not maintain the morphology of the ovarian follicles; its combination with ZEN counteracted the negative effects observed when follicles were cultured in the presence of the mycotoxin alone...

Plant lignans possess several properties beneficial for human health and therefore, increasing their contents in foods and beverages is desirable. One of the lignan sources in human diet is wine. To elucidate the origin of lignans contained in wine, LC-MS was used to analyze resinol-related lignans in must, seeds, stems, and wine prepared using stainless steel tanks, oak barrels, and Qvevri (clay vessel). White wines aged in stainless steel tanks contained significantly lower amounts of lignan aglycones (20-60 µg/L) than red and Qvevri wines (300-500 µg/L)...

BACKGROUND: The aryltetralin lignan (-)-podophyllotoxin is a potent antiviral and anti-neoplastic compound that is mainly found in Podophyllum plant species. Over the years, the commercial demand for this compound rose notably because of the high clinical importance of its semi-synthetic chemotherapeutic derivatives etoposide and teniposide. To satisfy this demand, (-)-podophyllotoxin is conventionally isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Sinopodophyllum hexandrum, which can only grow in few regions and is now endangered by overexploitation and environmental damage...
