Racemic and enantiopure (1R,2R) forms of trans-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (H2chdc and R-H2chdc, respectively) have been used in the synthesis of a series of 13 uranyl ion complexes, all obtained under solvo-hydrothermal conditions and in the presence of additional metal cations and/or N-donor ligands. While the homometallic complex [UO2(R-chdc)] (1) was only obtained with the enantiopure ligand, complexes [UO2(chdc)(THF)] (2), [UO2(chdc)(DMF)] (3), and [UO2(chdc)(NMP)] (4), with a coordinated solvent molecule, were obtained from the racemic form only; all crystallize as two-dimensional (2D) assemblies...

We report here the fabrication of polyamide aerogels composed of poly-p-phenylene-terephthalamide, the same backbone chemistry as DuPont's Kevlar. The all-para-substituted polymers gel without the use of cross-linker and maintain their shape during processing-an improvement over the meta-substituted cross-linked polyamide aerogels reported previously. Solutions containing calcium chloride (CaCl2) and para-phenylenediamine (pPDA) in N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) at low temperature are reacted with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC)...

The nuclear matrix (NM), or nuclear skeleton, is the non-chromatin, ribonucleoproteinaceous framework that is resistant to high ionic strength buffers, nonionic detergents, and nucleolytic enzymes. The NM fulfills a structural role in eukaryotic cells and is responsible for maintaining the shape of the nucleus and the spatial organization of chromatin. Moreover, the NM participates in several cellular processes, such as DNA replication/repair, gene expression, RNA transport, cell signaling and differentiation, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis and carcinogenesis...

Drug release from tissue scaffolds is commonly controlled by using coatings and carriers, as well as by varying the binding affinity of molecules being released. This paper considers modulating synthetic peptide incorporation and release through the use of interconnected microporosity in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and identifies the microstructural characteristics important to the release using experiments and a model of relative diffusivity. First, the release of three modular peptides designed to include an osteocalcin-inspired binding sequence based on bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) was compared and one was selected for further study...

Ultrasound-induced liquid-phase exfoliation (UILPE) is an established method to produce single- (SLG) and few-layer (FLG) graphene nanosheets starting from graphite as a precursor. In this paper we investigate the effect of the ultrasonication power in the UILPE process carried out in either N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB). Our experimental results reveal that while the SLGs/FLGs concentration of the NMP dispersions is independent of the power of the ultrasonic bath during the UILPE process, in o-DCB it decreases as the ultrasonication power increases...

Cross-linking of hole-transporting polymer thin films in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been shown to increase device efficacy when subsequent layers are deposited from solution. This improvement, due to resistance of the films to dissolution, could also be achieved by covalently grafting the polymer film to the substrate. Using nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP), we synthesized a novel poly(9-(4-vinylbenzyl)-9H-carbazole) (poly(VBK)) copolymer which can be cross-linked and also developed two simple methods for the grafting-to or grafting-from, also known as surface-initiated polymerization, of poly(VBK) to indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates...

A ternary solvent system consisting of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) has been developed to improve the uniformity of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) perovskite domains. Compared to MAPbI3 perovskite films prepared using a binary solvent consisting of DMSO and GBL, the surface roughness and uniformity of MAPbI3 films fabricated by using the ternary solvent system are greatly improved. The thermogravimetric analysis reveals that a NMP-PbI2-MAI intermediate, a DMSO-PbI2-MAI intermediate and MAPbI3 crystals co-existed in the as-cast MAPbI3 films...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ex-situ liver machine perfusion has been the focus of increasing interest over the past decade as a means to improve the quality of livers for transplantation and the applicability of liver transplantation in general. The present review aims to evaluate the experimental basis for liver machine perfusion and the significance of recent reports on its clinical application. RECENT FINDINGS: Although liver machine perfusion has been studied experimentally over a range of temperatures, clinical liver transplant work that has been performed to date has been done using either hypothermic machine perfusion (0-12 °C), HMP or normothermic machine perfusion (35-38 °C, NMP)...

BACKGROUND: Ex situ normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) can be performed after traditional static cold preservation to assess graft function and viability prior to transplantation. It is unknown whether this results in activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis, as may occur upon graft reperfusion in vivo. METHODS: Twelve donor livers declined for transplantation underwent 6 hours of end-ischemic NMP using a heparinized plasma-based perfusion fluid. Concentration of prothrombin fragment F1+2 (marker of coagulation activation), D-dimer, PAP complex, tPA and PAI-1 (markers for fibrinolysis) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT; marker of ischemia/reperfusion [I/R] injury) were measured in perfusion fluid at regular intervals...

Sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation of layered materials in suitable organic solvents offers a simple scalable route for the production of 2D nanomaterials. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is one of the most efficient solvents for liquid-phase exfoliation of a variety of layered solids, including MoS2. We show here that trace water present in NMP is crucial for the stability of MoS2 nanosheets in NMP dispersions. In the absence of water, the sheets are fragmented and chemically unstable. Using solution NMR techniques, 2D nuclear Overhauser effect and spin-lattice relaxation measurements, supported by classical molecular dynamics simulations, we are able to establish the role of water molecules in stabilizing the dispersion...

The German Human Biomonitoring Commission (HBM Commission) derives health-related guidance values (Human Biomonitoring assessment values, HBM values) according to the procedures described in the HBM Commission's position papers. Since the last adaption of the methodology in 2014, the HBM Commission has established a series of new HBM values, mainly on the basis of internationally agreed TDI/RfD values, or of toxicologically well- founded points of departure observed in animal studies. The derivation of these new HBM values for HBCDD, triclosan, 2-MBT, PFOA and PFOS as well as for the metabolites of glycol ethers, of Hexamoll(®) DINCH(®), DPHP, DEHTP, NMP, NEP, and 4-MBC is specified, and the HBM values are presented together with already established HBM values for other substances...

The present work demonstrates the synthesis and application of permanent magnetic Nd2Fe14B microparticle (NMP)-loaded graphitic inks for realizing rapidly self-healing inexpensive printed electrochemical devices. The incorporation of NMPs into the printable ink imparts impressive self-healing ability to the printed conducting trace, with rapid (~50 ms) recovery of repeated large (3 mm) damages at the same or different locations without any user intervention or external trigger. The permanent and surrounding-insensitive magnetic properties of the NMPs thus result in long-lasting ability to repair extreme levels of damage, independent of ambient conditions...

ZnO/graphene (ZnO-G) hybrid composites are prepared via hydrothermal synthesis with graphite, N-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP), and Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O as the precursors. The characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate the formation of ZnO-G. Gas sensors were fabricated with ZnO-G composites and ZnO as sensing material, indicating that the response of the ZnO towards acetone was significantly enhanced by graphene doping...

Background Donor organ shortage necessitates use of less than optimal donor allografts for transplantation. Current cold storage preservation technique fails to preserve marginal donor grafts sufficiently. Evidence from large animal experiments suggests superiority of normothermic machine preservation (NMP) of liver allografts. In this study, we analyse discarded human liver grafts that underwent NMP for the extended period of 24 hours. Methods Thirteen human liver grafts which had been discarded for transplantation, were entered into this study...
