In this study, the one-pot four-component reaction of aromatic aldehyde, 2-thiobarbituric acid, ammonium acetate in the presence of a catalytic amount of [H-NMP](+)[HSO4](-) under ultrasonic irradiation in water is reported. In the present procedure, the pyrido[2,3-d:6,5-d']dipyrimidine derivatives were purely produced as valuable products. The process proved to be simple, environmentally friendly, efficient and high to excellent yielding. Moreover, some of the synthetic compounds were investigated and revealed important antimicrobial activity of prepared products...

In this work, we investigated the influence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the solubility of artemisinin in aqueous solution by using quantitative (1)H NMR. Experimental results demonstrate that about 4 times of incremental increase occurs on the solubility of artemisinin upon introducing PVP. In addition, dipole-dipole interaction between the ester group of artemisinin and the amide group of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), a model compound of PVP, is characterized by two-dimensional (2D) correlation FTIR spectroscopy with the DAOSD (Double Asynchronous Orthogonal Sample Design) approach developed in our previous work...

Drug efflux mechanisms interact synergistically with the outer membrane permeability barrier of Gram-negative bacteria, leading to intrinsic resistance that presents a major challenge for antibiotic drug development. Efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs) which block the efflux of antibiotics synergize antibiotics, but the clinical development of EPI/antibiotic combination therapy to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative infections has been challenging. This is in part caused by the inefficiency of current EPIs to penetrate the outer membrane and resist efflux...

The phase separation behavior of bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (PC), dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dichloromethane solvents in coagulant water, was studied by the cloud point method. The respective cloud point data were determined by titration against water at room temperature and the characteristic binodal curves for the ternary systems were plotted. Further, the physical properties such as viscosity, refractive index, and density of the solution were measured. The critical polymer concentrations were determined from the viscosity measurements...

Mycobacterium smegmatis MutT1, which is made up of a Nudix domain (domain 1) and a histidine phosphatase domain (domain 2), efficiently hydrolyses 8-oxo-GTP and 8-oxo-dGTP to the corresponding nucleoside diphosphates and phosphate in the presence of magnesium ions. Domain 1 alone hydrolyses nucleoside triphosphates less efficiently. Under high concentrations and over long periods, the full-length enzyme as well as domain 1 catalyses the hydrolysis of the nucleoside triphosphates to the respective nucleoside monophosphates and pyrophosphate...

O(6)-Benzylguanine (O(6)-BG) is a substrate of O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), which is involved in drug resistance of chemotherapy in the majority of glioblastoma multiform. For clinical diagnosis, it is hoped that the MGMT expression level could be determined by a noninvasive method to understand the detailed biological properties of MGMT-specific tumors. We synthesized (11)C-labeled O(6)-[(3-methyl)benzyl]guanine ([(11)C]mMeBG) as a positron emission tomography probe. Thus, a mixed amine-protected stannyl precursor, N(9)-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-O(6)-[3-(tributylstannyl)benzyl]-N(2)-(trifluoroacetyl)guanine, was subjected to rapid C-[(11)C]methylation under [(11)C]CH3I/[Pd2(dba)3]/P(o-CH3C6H4)3/CuCl/K2CO3 in NMP, followed by quick deprotection with LiOH/H2O, giving [(11)C]mMeBG with total radioactivity of 1...

The effect of diffuse compositional interfaces on copolymer self-assembly was studied via gradient copolymers (GCP). Poly(methyl methacrylate)-grad-(styrene) (PMMA-grad-PSt) copolymers were synthesized in semi-batch mode using nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) with varied monomer injection protocols to produce varied diffuse interfaces (number average molecular weights (Mn) ranged from 62 000 g mol(-1) to 94 000 g mol(-1) with dispersities (Đ) between 1.35 and 1.59). The GCPs were spun into thin films on substrates made neutral by (St-ran-MMA-ran-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) terpolymers and annealed at elevated temperature to produce vertically oriented microphase-separated domains...

BACKGROUND: Lack of oxygen and biomechanical stimulation during static cold storage (SCS) of donor livers compromises endothelial cell function. We investigated the effect of end-ischemic oxygenated hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) on endothelial cell function of extended criteria donor (ECD) livers. METHODS: Eighteen livers, declined for transplantation, were transported to our center using static cold storage (SCS). After SCS, 6 livers underwent two hours of HMP, and subsequent normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) to assess viability...

Molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) with selective removal properties for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were prepared through the phase inversion technique. The MIMs were obtained from casting the viscous solutions of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), polysulfone (PSf), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as the casting solvent. Different membranes were prepared at different concentration of MIPs and PSf. The resulting MIMs were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)...

Internal model control (IMC) with optimal H2 minimization framework is proposed in this paper for design of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. The controller design is addressed for integrating and double integrating time delay processes with right half plane (RHP) zeros. Blaschke product is used to derive the optimal controller. There is a single adjustable closed loop tuning parameter for controller design. Systematic guidelines are provided for selection of this tuning parameter based on maximum sensitivity...

Modulating the dimensions and phases of transition metal dichalcogenides is of great interest to enhance their intrinsic properties or to create new physicochemical properties. Herein, we report an effective approach to synthesize 2H-WS2 quantum dots (QDs) via the dimension and phase engineering of 1T-WS2 nanosheets. The solvothermal reaction of chemically exfoliated 1T-WS2 nanosheets in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) under an N2 atmosphere induced their chopping and phase transition at lower temperature to produce 2H-WS2 QDs with a high quantum yield (5...

Mu opioid receptor selective antagonists are highly desirable because of their utility as pharmacological probes for receptor characterization and functional studies. Furthermore, the mu opioid receptors act as an important target in drug abuse and addiction treatment. Previously, we reported NAP as a novel lead compound with high selectivity and affinity towards the mu opioid receptor. Based on NAP, we have synthesized its derivatives and further characterized their binding affinities and selectivity towards the receptor...

Mesoderm induction begins during gastrulation. Recent evidence from several vertebrate species indicates mesoderm induction continues after gastrulation in neuromesodermal progenitor cells (NMPs) within the posterior-most embryonic structure called the tailbud. It is unclear to what extent the molecular mechanisms of mesoderm induction are conserved between gastrula and post-gastrula stages of development. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling is required for mesoderm induction during gastrulation through positive transcriptional regulation of the t-box transcription factor brachyury (ntla in zebrafish)...
