BACKGROUND: Certain widely used pathological outcome prediction models that were developed in tertiary centers tend to overpredict outcomes in the community setting; thus, the Michigan Urological-Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC) model was developed in general urology practice to address this issue. Additionally, the development of these models involved a relatively small proportion of Black men, potentially compromising the accuracy of predictions in this patient group. We tested the validity of the MUSIC and three widely used nomograms to compare their overall and race-stratified predictive performance...

Obstructive azoospermia is a kind of common clinical disease, which often happens in epididymis, vas deferens and ejaculatory duct obstruction and accounts for male infertility. Azoospermia, which is caused by obstruction of the ejaculatory duct, is relatively rare. but the development of endoscopic technology now allows the disease to be resolved by surgery. In the past, transurethral resection of ejaculatory duct (TURED) has been used to treat patients with ejaculatory duct obstruction and azoosperm-free disease...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of systematic male reproductive system ultrasonography in the diagnosis of azoospermia etiology. METHODS: Retrospective analysis and classification statistics were conducted on the data of azoospermia cases who underwent systematic male reproductive system ultrasound examination at the First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University from January 2013 to January 2023. RESULTS: A total of 375 cases were included in the group, of which 303 cases could be diagnosed by ultrasound, including 161 cases of obstructive causes, 110 cases of non obstructive causes, and 32 cases of mixed causes...

PURPOSE: Segmentation of the prostate and surrounding organs at risk from computed tomography is required for radiation therapy treatment planning. We propose an automatic two-step deep learning-based segmentation pipeline that consists of an initial multi-organ segmentation network for organ localization followed by organ-specific fine segmentation. APPROACH: Initial segmentation of all target organs is performed using a hybrid convolutional-transformer model, axial cross-attention UNet...

BACKGROUND: The etiology of chronic prostatitis remains unclear; consequently, this disease is associated with recurrence and ineffective clinical therapy. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the underlying pathogenesis of chronic prostatitis in order to develop more efficacious treatments. OBJECTIVE: The previous study found that knocking out of PEBP4 leads to chronic prostatitis in the male mice. This research aimed to identify the role of PEBP4 in prostatitis, determine the molecular pathogenic mechanisms associated with chronic prostatitis, and provide guidelines for the development of new treatment strategies for chronic prostatitis...

BACKGROUND: A few studies have examined the ultrastructure of prostatic neuroendocrine cells (NECs), and no study has focused on their ultrastructure in three dimensions. In this study, three-dimensional ultrastructural analysis of mouse prostatic NECs was performed to clarify their anatomical characteristics. METHODS: Three 13-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were deeply anesthetized, perfused with physiological saline and 2% paraformaldehyde, and then placed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0...

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited kidney disease characterized by the formation of numerous cysts in organs other than the kidneys. Although female patients with ADPKD do not have direct fertility problems, infertility in male patients may arise following the formation of cystic lesions in the lower seminal tract, which impair the function of spermatozoa. Generally, the treatment strategy for necrospermia depends on the severity of sperm viability, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection may be offered to patients with necrospermia...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recently, deep learning algorithms, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown remarkable progress in medical imaging analysis. Semantic segmentation, which segments an unknown image into different parts and objects, has potential applications in robotic surgery in areas where artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied, such as in AI-assisted surgery, surgeon training, and skill assessment. We aimed to investigate the performance of a CNN-based deep learning model in real-time segmentation in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RALP)...

AIM: As multidisciplinary treatment strategies for colorectal cancer have improved, aggressive surgical resection has become commonplace. Multivisceral and extended resections offer curative-intent resection with significant survival benefit. However, limited data exist regarding the feasibility and oncological efficacy of performing extended resection via a minimally invasive approach. The aim of this study was to determine the perioperative and long-term outcomes following robotic extended resection for colorectal cancer...

PURPOSE: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common malignancy in men aged 50 years and older and the second cause of cancer death among men. Accurate staging of PCa preoperatively is of high importance for treatment decisions and patient management. Conventional imaging modalities (ultrasound, computed tomography [CT], and magnetic resonance imaging) are inaccurate for the staging of PCa. Newer modality multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) scan show promising results for the staging of PCa...

Juvenile hormone (JH) is one of the most essential hormones controlling insect metamorphosis and physiology. While it is well known that JH affects many tissues throughout the insects life cycle, the difference in JH responsiveness and the repertoire of JH-inducible genes among different tissues has not been fully investigated. In this study, we monitored JH responsiveness in vivo using transgenic Drosophila melanogaster flies carrying a JH response element-GFP ( JHRE-GFP ) construct. Our data highlight the high responsiveness of the epithelial cells within the seminal vesicle, a component of the male reproductive tract, to JH...

Sperm capacitation is broadly defined as a suite of biochemical and biophysical changes resulting from the acquisition of fertilization ability. To gain insights into the regulation mechanism of crustacean sperm capacitation, 4D label-free quantitative proteomics was first applied to analyze the changes of sperm in Eriocheir sinensis under three sequential physiological conditions: seminal vesicles (X2), hatched with the seminal receptacle content (X3), and incubated with egg water (X5). In total, 1536 proteins were identified, among which 880 proteins were quantified, with 82 and 224 proteins significantly altered after incubation with the seminal receptacle contents and egg water...

BACKGROUND: PSMA PET/CT is the most sensitive molecular imaging modality for prostate cancer (PCa), yet much of the developing world has little or no access to PET/CT. [99m Tc]Tc-PSMA scintigraphy (PS) is a cheaper and more accessible gamma camera-based alternative. However, many resource-constrained departments have only a single camera without tomographic or hybrid imaging functionality, and camera time is frequently in high demand. Simplifying imaging protocols by limiting the field of view (FOV) and omitting SPECT/CT or even SPECT may provide a partial solution...

Solitary fibrous tumor arising from the seminal vesicle is very rare. We describe 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT findings in a case of prostate adenocarcinoma with a solitary fibrous tumor of the left seminal vesicle. The solitary fibrous tumor showed intense 18F-PSMA-1007 uptake mimicking metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma. This case indicates that solitary fibrous tumor may cause false-positive result when using PSMA PET in staging of prostate cancer.

A 76-year-old man undergoing hormone therapy for prostate cancer was referred for 68Ga-PSMA-11-PET (PSMA PET) due to persistently detectable PSA level. No PSMA-positive tumor lesions were detected, so a delayed phase imaging was performed, which revealed focal PSMA uptake in the right seminal vesicle together with contrast accumulation on excretory phase contrast-enhanced CT. These findings were finally determined to be secondary to urinary reflux as a consequence of a prostatic enucleation he had undergone 5 months earlier following an episode of acute urinary retention...
