BACKGROUND: Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an anti-oxidant found in many over-the-counter supplements and is used in treatments for diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Although it is a safe oral molecule, there have been eight cases of ALA toxicity reported. Three reported cases were among adult patients and five were among pediatric patients. A 14-year-old girl died after ingestion of 6 g of ALA leading to multi-organ failure. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman presented to the emergency department 4 h after an intentional overdose of 10 tablets of ALA 600 mg each (6 g, 92...

Oxidative stress (OS), resulting from a disrupted balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protective antioxidants, is thought to play an important pathogenetic role in several diseases, including viral infections. Alpha-lipoic acid (LA) is one of the most-studied and used natural compounds, as it is endowed with a well-defined antioxidant and immunomodulatory profile. Owing to these properties, LA has been tested in several chronic immunoinflammatory conditions, such as diabetic neuropathy and metabolic syndrome...

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a rare clinical condition which is characterized by complex hallucinations in visually impaired patients. The pathophysiology of this disorder remains largely unknown, and there is still no proven treatment for this disease. In our study, we aimed to investigate the neural activity through Electroencephalography (EEG) power and evaluate the effect of rivastigmine in combination with alpha-lipoic acid on hallucination in two CBS patients with diabetic retinopathy...

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic, chronic and incurable disease which reduces span and quality of life. Over 50% of diabetic patients have clinical manifestations of diabetic neuropathy. AIM: To show a positive influence of alpha lipoic acid on clinically manifested diabetic neuropathy symptoms as well as the effect of alpha lipoic acid in patients glycaemic control. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Testing has been conducted in Cantonal Hospital"Irfan Ljubijankic MD" in Bihac and included 20 diabetes type 2 patients who were diagnosed with clinically manifested diabetic neuropathy...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are widely believed to cause or aggravate several human pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, stroke and many other ailments. Antioxidants are assumed to counteract the harmful effects of ROS and therefore prevent or treat oxidative stress-related diseases. In this report, recent human studies exploring the efficiency of antioxidants in prevention and treatment of various diseases are reviewed. Few antioxidants including edaravone (for ischemic stroke in Japan), Nacetylcysteine (for acetaminophen toxicity), alfa-lipoic acid (for diabetic neuropathy) and some flavonoids (polyphenolic compounds present in dietary plants), such as micronized purified flavonoid fraction (diosmin and hesperidin) and oxerutins (for chronic venous insufficiency) as well as baicalein and catechins (for osteoarthritis) have found accepted clinical use...
