BACKGROUND: Chorioamniotic membrane separation (CMS) is a rare finding that is commonly preceded by invasive fetal procedures. The presence of CMS can also be associated with uncommon maternal or fetal conditions as well as preterm delivery, amniotic band syndrome, umbilical cord complications, and fetal and neonatal death. Congenital constriction of the limbs is usually due to amniotic band syndrome, which often causes damage to the skin and soft tissues. We report an unusual case in which a neonate had recent fractures of both leg bones with an amniotic band encircling the limb. Non-operative treatment was successful. Challenges to the management of neonatal limb constriction include the absence of a consensus about the best treatment and the high frequency of damage to vessels and nerves.

We report a case of amniotic band syndrome diagnosed prenatally by serial sonographic examinations. Our initial sonographic image showed a large fetal nuchal translucency (NT) at 12 weeks' gestation. Repeated fetal ultrasound images revealed an amniotic band and right upper limb anomaly. Fetal MRI at 19 weeks' gestation revealed right forearm hypoplasia and pseudosyndactyly. Amniotic band can cause a broad spectrum of anomalies ranging from simple band constrictions to major craniofacial and visceral defects. It can cause significant neonatal morbidity. Accurate diagnosis will help in the management of the present pregnancy and in counseling with regard to future pregnancies. Here we report three cases of amniotic band syndrome detected in the prenatal period.
