1. Dose-dependent effects of adrenaline on PDHa activity were investigated with both incubated rat epidiymal fat-pads and isolated adipocytes. 2. Adrenaline (10nM- 5 micrometer) decreased PDHa activity in fat-pads incubated with 5 mM-[U-14C]glucose + insulin (20 munits/ml). Changes in [U-14C]glucose incorporation into fatty acids in these tissues correlated only loosely with changes in PDHa activity. There was a good inverse relationship between adrenaline-induced changes in PDHa activity and increases in lipolysis (glycerol release)...

The urographies of 106 patients with acute epididymitis are reviewed. In 71 cases the urogrpahy was completely normal, while in the remaining 35 patients abnormalities were found. In 25 patients the findings were consistent with hypertrophy of the prostate. More than half of the patients had known urological diseases and had undergone cystoscopy and/or catheterization prior to the onset of acute epididymitis. All 35 patients had demonstrated symptoms that would otherwise have resulted in intravenous urography independent of the epididymitis...

The effects of unilateral orchidectomy on the adult rat epidiymal testosterone metabolizing enzymes, delta 4-5 alpha-reductase and 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, are investigated. Five weeks following unilateral orchidectomy, it is found that the activity of 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase per organ is not altered, whereas delta 4-5 alpha-reductase activity decreased by more than 80% on the side of the orchidectomy. Neither accessory sex tissue weights, ventral prostate and seminal vesicles, nor the concentration of circulating testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, or prolactin is altered by unilateral orchidectomy...

The present study reports the effects of the lipophylic ionophore X537A on lipolysis and accumulation of cAMP in isolated hamster epidiymal adipocytes. X537A inhibited lipolysis activated with norepinephrine, isoproterenol, dibutyryl cAMP or theophylline but failed to influence basal lipolysis. The minimum effective concentration of X537A required to inhibit lipolysis was between 1 and 3 micrograms/ml; at a concentration of 10 micrograms/ml, X537A inhibited lipolysis by approximately 50%. The antilipolytic effect of X537A does not result from decreased formation of cAMP because the accumulation of cAMP in response to isoproterenol or theophylline was significantly potentiated in the presence of the ionophore...

The effect of cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP) and caffeine on the motility of spermatozoa obtained in vivo by micropuncture from the rat rete testis, caput epidiymidis, and cauda epididymidis was studied. Spermatozoa from all sites were immobile in their native fluid. Rete testis spermatozoa were not motile under any experimental conditions. After dilution in salt solution, some caput sperm exhibited circular motion, whereas most cauda sperm swam progressively. Dextrose enhanced the motility of sperm from both epidiymal sites...

A connecting link between carbohydrate and fat metabolism in adipose tissue is theconcentration of alpha-glycerophosphate derived predominantly from the glycolysis ofglucose entering the fat cell. However, several investigators have reported the presence of a glycerol specific kinase in the epidiymal fat-pad of the rat and obob mouse. This enzyme's presence in other mammalian adipose tissue could contribute to the alpha-glycerophosphate pool and thus affect both carbohydrate and fat metabolism within the fat cell...

Ram epidiymitis caused by Brucella ovis can be effective controlled by an annual program combining rigorous culling clinically affected animals and appropriate vaccination of the remaining animals. Yearling rams purchased or saved as replacement breeders should be immunized at 4-5 months of age by two injections of Br. ovis bacterin spaced 3-6 weeks apart. Annually, approximately one month prior to the breeding season, all rams, replacements and older breeders as well, should be carefully examined by palpation of the scrotal contents...

Bacteriological cultures of the ejaculates of 28 patients with acute unspecific epididymitis yielded in 6 cases growth of organisms which were considered to be the cause of the disease. Tests with conventional clinical antibiotics showed organism resistance in half of these cases. Because of possible contamination of the ejaculate with organisms in the urethra and in the preputial area, the results of bacteriological cultures of the ejaculate must be evaluated critically. But a bacteriological ejaculate culture should be carried out in all cases of acute epididymitis at the first consultation so that the antibiotic treatment can be begun immediately afterwards with a tetracycline preparation...
