Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder in which blood glucose level raises that can result in severe complications. However, the incidence increased mostly by obesity, pregnancy, persistent corpus luteum, and diestrus phase in humans and animals. This review has focused on addressing the possible understanding and pathogenesis of spontaneous DM in canine, feline, and few wild animals. Furthermore, pancreatic associated disorders, diabetic ketoacidosis, hormonal and drug interaction with diabetes, and herbal remedies associated with DM are elucidated...

Infection with genotype 1 or 2 hepatitis E virus (HEV) results primarily from human-to-human transmission through the fecal-oral route in low-resource countries. It presents primarily as "acute viral hepatitis" syndrome, usually a self-limiting illness. A few cases progress to acute liver failure, a serious illness with high fatality. Clinical disease is infrequent among children. Infection during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of symptomatic disease, severe liver injury, and mortality...

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an inflammatory cytokine involved in many acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. However, its role in acute lung injury associated with acute pancreatitis in pregnancy (APIP) has not yet been elucidated. The present study was undertaken to clarify the effect and potential mechanism of MIF antagonist (S,R)3‑(4‑hydroxyphenyl)‑4,5‑dihydro‑5‑isoxazole acetic acid methyl ester (ISO‑1) in the development of acute lung injury in rats with APIP. Eighteen late‑gestation SD rats were randomly assigned to three groups: Sham operation (SO) group, APIP group, and ISO‑1 group...

Pregnancy places acute demands on maternal physiology, including profound changes in glucose homeostasis. Gestation is characterized by an increase in insulin resistance, counterbalanced by an adaptive increase in pancreatic β cell production of insulin. Failure of normal adaptive responses of the islet to increased maternal and fetal demands manifests as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The gestational changes and rapid reversal of islet adaptations following parturition are at least partly driven by an anticipatory program rather than post-factum compensatory adaptations...

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), a catastrophic illness for both the mother and the unborn offspring, develops in the last trimester of pregnancy with significant maternal and perinatal mortality. AFLP is also recognized as an obstetric and medical emergency. Maternal AFLP is highly associated with a fetal homozygous mutation (1528G>C) in the gene that encodes for mitochondrial long-chain hydroxy acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD). The mutation in LCHAD results in the accumulation of 3-hydroxy fatty acids, such as 3-hydroxy myristic acid, 3-hydroxy palmitic acid and 3-hydroxy dicarboxylic acid in the placenta, which are then shunted to the maternal circulation leading to the development of acute liver injury observed in patients with AFLP...

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Its diagnosis is often delayed and patients are frequently found to have unresectable disease. Patients diagnosed with new-onset diabetes have an 8-fold risk of harboring pancreatic cancer. Adrenomedullin has been claimed to mediate diabetes in pancreatic cancer. New screening tools are needed to develop an early diagnosis protocol. METHODS: Patients aged 45-75 years within 2 years of first fulfilling the ADA criteria for diabetes will be prospectively enrolled in this study...

Acute pancreatitis in pregnancy (APIP), which was thought to be rare, is becoming more frequent. In addition, high perinatal mortality among fetuses has been reported. Our research aimed to investigate and assess fetal lung injury in a rat model of APIP and its possible mechanisms. The APIP model was induced by sodium taurocholate in Sprague-Dawley rats during the third trimester. Sham-operated (SO) rats in late gestation were used as controls, and dynamic observation and detection in the SO and acute pancreatitis (AP) groups were performed at 3 time-points...

Serum levels of maternal lipids rise physiologically in normal pregnancy, and women with underlying hypertriglyceridemia may experience dramatic elevations which place them at risk for pancreatitis. We describe the case of a woman with severe familial hypertriglyceridemia and prior pancreatitis who discontinued her lipid-lowering therapy early in pregnancy. She promptly developed severe abdominal pain and was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis during the late first trimester. Despite aggressive medical treatment and critical care monitoring, she developed abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) with associated acute renal failure, which progressed to cardiorespiratory failure and was ultimately fatal...

Hypertrigliceridemia is the third most common cause of acute pancreatitis. The risk of developing acute pancreatitis is 5% in healthy patients and 4% during pregnancy with triglyceride levels >1,000mg/dl. During pregnancy there are changes in the lipid profile that increase between two and four times triglyceride levels. Its increase in excessive form produces an oxidative environment with injury of the endothelium and appearance of complications such as preeclampsia or pancreatitis. We present the case of a pregnant woman with pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridemia...
