The significance of lipid abnormalities as the risk factor for stroke remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of lipoprotein (a) [lp(a)] in stroke patients with large and small vessel disease. We studied 71 patients being 3 to 12 months after ischemic stroke (including 30 subjects with large vessel disease and 41 subjects with small vessel disease) and 30 controls. We excluded patients with stroke of cardioembolic, rare or uncertain etiology, subjects with diabetes, with history of myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, hypo- or hyperthyreoidism, hepatic or renal insufficiency, and treated with statins or fibrates...

The treatment for hyperthyreoidism is usually conservative and consists of medications that limit the production of thyroid hormones. The diagnose of hyperthyreoidism was set up according to clinical finding, to determine the level of FT3, FT4, TSH with thyroid scintigraphy, and ultrasonography. In this study we showed the result in the therapy of the hyperthyreoidism with Favistan-Tiamazol tbl. during the period 2000-2001.

Efficient and permanent restoration of euthyreosis is an important factor in the therapy of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). The choice for a treatment method of thyreotoxicosis (thyreostatic drugs, radioiodine, strumectomy) may influence the natural course of the coexistent ophthalmopathy. Some forms of therapy seem to facilitate the withdrawal of the ophthalmic symptoms, while the others may worsen or even increase the risk of the reveal of GO. This paper includes the discussion of the influence of a chosen treatment of hyperthyreoidism on the course of GO...

Orbital radiation therapy appears to be an effective and safe treatment of Graves' ophthalmopathy. Five patients with Graves' ophtalmopathy were treated with external beam radiotherapy during 1996 and 1997 in St. Ann University Hospital. Four of them patients had a past history of hyperthyreoidism, one hypothyreoidism. The radiotherapy was performed with high-energy beam of a linear accelerator. The technique of irradiation employs 2 opposed beams tilted 5 degrees posteriorly. The use of the asymetric jaws is necessary to protect surrounding normal tissues...

The diagnosis of hyperthyreoidism manifesting in the elderly meets difficulty in many cases. Lack of some characteristic symptoms observable in younger patients can be misleading. The authors summarize the data of ten clinical cases where the hyperthyreoidism appeared in occult form, reminding rather for heart disease or malignant tumours. The assay of thyroid hormones and the level of antithyreoglobulin and anti-thyreoid peroxidase antibodies was unavoidable in order to establish correct diagnosis. Though the early diagnosis and treatment may enhance the life expectancy of the patients and may considerably decrease the cardial and the consecutive cerebral complications...

Dibromdulcitol containing modified MOPP chemotherapeutic regimen plus radiotherapy were used in 58 children with Stage I-IV Hodgkin's disease diagnosed between 1975 and 1985 in Hungary. A remission rate of 93.1% and a 5-year relapse-free survival of 89% was observed. Some latent hyperthyreoidism as late effect of the therapy, no growth disturbances and no adverse gonadal effects were seen until now.

In a well-defined area with a centralized endocrinologic and nuclear medicine care the change of manifestation of hyperthyreosis was studied by complete inquiry before and during goiter prophylaxis. The area is known as an iodine deficiency one with endemic goiter (glacial downstream). In connection of time of completing alimentary iodine the dates show an increase of hyperthyreoidism by factor 1.6 in 1985 and by factor 3 in 1987. The increase concerns both Graves' disease and Plummer's disease. Methodological problems of the investigations are discussed...

A control group was comprised of 34 healthy subjects. In order to determine the electrophysiologic parameters the transoesophageal atrium extrastimulus technique and the over-driving stimulation were applied. Restoration of the euthyroid status was accompanied by a significant prolongation of the atrial refraction, the border interval, the border conductivity and the sinus rhythm recurrence time...

Since the triiodothyronine (T3) shifts the tissue metabolism to oxidative direction, one should await that in hyperthyreoidism caused by T3 an oxidosis will be formed, whilst in hypothyreoidism called forth by subtotal thyreoidectomy, redosis will be emerged. However, according to our experiments these interrelationships proved to be inverse. These "paradoxal" changes of redox-state are the consequences of the flowing redox compensations elicited by the tissue redox-buffer capacity (RBC). The pathomechanism can be modelled with differential equation (computer analysis)...

A 49 years old female patient entered the surgical department because of epigastric and ileocoecal pains with the symptoms of acute abdomen. A surgical intervention was performed because of supposed appendicitis, but it was not verified. During the surgical observation the patient was confused and negativistic so she was transferred to the psychiatric department. Because of loss of 20 kg weight, high blood sedimentation and anaemia she was sent to our department with the suspicion of an organic disease. A moderate exophthalmos, glittering eyes and Graefe's sign was noted, therefore hyperthyroidism was diagnosed, which was proved by Kocher's blood picture, low serum cholesterol, extremely high T3 and T4 level, and iodine storage diagram...

Patients with hyperthyreoidism often present an increased activity of alkaline phosphatase in serum. Determination of isoenzymes may help to assign to different organs an elevated enzyme-activity in serum. This report deals with a patient suffering from hyperthyreoidism. In his serum alkaline phosphatase of the thyroid gland could be identified by comparison with organ-extracts. Raised activity of this isoenzyme can contribute besides bone, liver and small bowel to the increased serum-activity of total alkaline phosphatase in patients with hyperthyreoidism...

Planning the strategy in diagnosis of diarrhea some questions need to be answered: 1. Do the complaints in question fulfill the defined criteria of diarrhea? 2. Is it an acute diarrhea of infectious origin requiring fast microbiologic diagnosis? 3. Is it a chronic diarrhea? A) Do anamnestic findings and present status induce a certain suspected diagnosis, as in hyperthyreoidism, drugs, intestinal resections? B) Is a complete stepwise diagnostic planning needed as in Crohn's disease, insufficiency of the pancreas, non tropical sprue? Diagnostic measures have to be taken into consideration according to the answers given...

In most cases Cardiogreen was injected into an antecubital vein during reactive hyperaemia. On the arterial side, dye concentrations were recorded by ear oximetry. The appearance time was shortened in most cases. During dilution time dye curves were interrupted by an early recirculation in hyperthyreoidism, whereas in 29 patients with haemodialysis fistulas this interruption was discrete and detectable only when compared with results after occlusion of the fistulas...

Radio-iodide diagnosis of the thyroid is a simple method of high security in the diagnosis of endocrine ophthalmopathy. This procedure is valuable especially, in cases where neither clinically, nor in the sero-hormonal diagnosis a disturbance of the thyroid can be found. In many cases an accelerated intrathyroidal turnover of radio-iodide can identify an unclear ophthalmopathy as an endocrine ophthalmopathy. The therapy of choice for hyperthyreoidism with endocrine ophthalmopathy is 131-iodide resection. This statement has been proven by our own experiences in more than 1000 cases in the past 15 years and by the results indicated in early literature about the course of ophthalmopathy after surgical or medical treatment...

Determinations in 11 patients with anti-thyroid drug therapy of hyperthyreoidism showed, that a pronounced lag period exist between normalisation of thyroid hormone level and TRH responsiveness. The lag period range between 5 and 27 weeks. During this time it is not necessary to give simultaneously thyroid hormones in antithyroid drug therapy to compensate hyperresponsiveness of TSH. - Investigations in 12 volunteers with experimental hyperthyreoidism induced by administration of thyroxine suggest a longterm suppression of the hypophysis to be the cause of the lag period of TSH-secretion...

In recent years it has become possible by means of a radioimmunoassay to measure Digoxin concentration in the serum of digitalized patients. With this method it could be shown that the resorption of Digoxin is decreased by partial resection of the samll intestines, by malabsorption syndromes, after ingestion of Neomycin, Colestyramine and antacids. In renal insufficiency, however, the elimination half-life period of Digoxin is increased conspiciously (from about 35 hours up to about 120 hours). This results in a raised serum concentration of cardiac glycosides unless the dosage is decreased considerably...
