HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: We report on a 24-year-old male patient who presented with worsening of the general condition and abdominal pain. INVESTIGATIONS: On physical examination, gynecomastia was noted. Laboratory tests showed manifest hyperthyroidism. The beta-hCG levels were markedly increased. By ultrasound, the thyroid gland was hyperperfused without thyroid nodules. Several large echo mixed lesions were found in the liver. The testes appeared normal...

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 28 year-old woman in her first pregnancy was referred to the department of obstetrics and gynecology at 24 weeks of gestation because of pregnancy-induced hypertension. INVESTIGATIONS: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 and free T4 were elevated. Antibody screening did not show antithyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies and TSH receptor antibodies. Clinical findings were suspicious of TSH secreting pituitary tumour (TSH-om) or thyroid hormone resistance (RTH)...

INTRODUCTION: Graves ophthalmopathy is an autoimmune disease, which is the consequence of thyroid dysfunction. Ocular manifestations occur in 50% of patients with Graves disease. The changes occur due to the inflammatory cell infiltration of retrobulbar fat tissue and extraocular muscles. Ultrasonography of eye orbit provides important information about the condition of retrobulbar adipose tissue and the thickness of extraocular muscles. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to show the clinical significance of orbital ultrasonography in the diagnostics and follow-up of patients with Graves disease...

Thyreotoxicosis in the elderly: aspecific signs may cause a delay in diagnosis. The clinical manifestations of thyroid diseases in the elderly are often atypical and can easily be attributed to other medical conditions or 'normal aging'.Two nursing home patiënts with hyperthyroidism are described. Due to the atypical presentation of the thyroid disease their complaints were attributed to other conditions. In both patients there was a significant delay in diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism. In elder patiens signs and symptoms of thyreotoxicosis are frequently related to cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric disorders...

We report on a male patient suffering from loss of weight, fatigue, fever, eosinophilia, and hyperthyreoidism. The echocardiogram revealed a left atrial mass originating from the posterior mitral leaflet. In combination with the constitutional symptoms a left atrial myxoma was diagnosed. The tumor was surgically removed. Postoperatively therapy with corticosteroids and thiamazole was stopped. During follow-up, eosinophilia and hyperthyreodism could no longer be detected.

In the literature of the past 30 years there are only some publications concerned with hair loss and hyperprolactinemia in women. Therefore, the relevance of hyperprolactinemia was evaluated in 40 women with diffuse alopecia.Hair loss was assessed by clinical appearance and the pluck trichogram. 82.5% of the female patients had diffuse hair loss and 17.5% had androgenetic alopecia. The highest prolactin values measured were 1390 ng/ml and 255 ng/ml. Six patients had values between 150-80.4 ng/ml and 10 between 79...

Clinical evidence indicates that hypothyroidism contributes to mood disorders. The present study tested if the mutant thyroid hormone receptor alpha 1 (TRalpha1) that causes a receptor-mediated hypothyroidism in the brain affects depressive and anxious behaviour in mice. Mice heterozygous for the TRalpha1 allele (TRalpha1+/m), yielding a receptor protein with a 10-fold reduced affinity to triiodothyronine (T3), and wildtype (wt) mice were subjected to several paradigms specifically testing depressive and anxious behaviour...

Hyperthyroidism is mainly caused by Graves' disease and toxic adenoma or multinodular goiter. In Europe, treatment of both disorders is usually started with antithyroidal drugs such as methimazole. Complications include agranulocytosis and the risk is dose-dependent. The starting dose of methimazole should not exceed 15-20 mg/d. Propylthiouracil can cause severe liver failure, leading to liver transplantation or death. Propylthiouracil, therefore, should not be used as first line agent and is only recommended when an antithyroid drug is to be started during the first trimester of pregnancy or in individuals who have experienced adverse responses to methimazole...

The administration of thyroxin (10 microg/100 g body weight, 7 days) in rats leads to an increase in the renal excretion of proteins and nitrates. Under the conditions of hypo- and normosodium diet, thyroxin decreased the rate of glomerular filtration. Hypersodium diet and captopril increased the rate of glomerular filtration in rats with experimental hyperthyreosis. The maximum level of renal excretion in hyperthyreoidal rats was observed on the background of sodium-rich diet.

The significance of lipid abnormalities as the risk factor for stroke remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of lipoprotein (a) [lp(a)] in stroke patients with large and small vessel disease. We studied 71 patients being 3 to 12 months after ischemic stroke (including 30 subjects with large vessel disease and 41 subjects with small vessel disease) and 30 controls. We excluded patients with stroke of cardioembolic, rare or uncertain etiology, subjects with diabetes, with history of myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, valvular heart disease, hypo- or hyperthyreoidism, hepatic or renal insufficiency, and treated with statins or fibrates...

The treatment for hyperthyreoidism is usually conservative and consists of medications that limit the production of thyroid hormones. The diagnose of hyperthyreoidism was set up according to clinical finding, to determine the level of FT3, FT4, TSH with thyroid scintigraphy, and ultrasonography. In this study we showed the result in the therapy of the hyperthyreoidism with Favistan-Tiamazol tbl. during the period 2000-2001.

Efficient and permanent restoration of euthyreosis is an important factor in the therapy of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). The choice for a treatment method of thyreotoxicosis (thyreostatic drugs, radioiodine, strumectomy) may influence the natural course of the coexistent ophthalmopathy. Some forms of therapy seem to facilitate the withdrawal of the ophthalmic symptoms, while the others may worsen or even increase the risk of the reveal of GO. This paper includes the discussion of the influence of a chosen treatment of hyperthyreoidism on the course of GO...

Alterations in the finger microcirculation in patients with disturbed function of the thyroid gland was evaluated with planimetric photoplethysmography. One-hundred forty-one patients with disturbed thyroid function (31 overt hyperthyreoidism, 10 latent hyperthyreoidism, 79 overt hypothyreoidism, 22 latent hypothyroidism) and 30 healthy individuals were investigated. Serum free thyroxine and thyreotropine level were determined in all investigated subjects. The systolic-diastolic index (SDI) was measured in all individuals with photopletysmography...
