OBJECTIVE: In ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement, distal placement of the peritoneal catheter is typically performed by a neurosurgeon. More recently, laparoscopic-assisted (LA) placement of the distal peritoneal catheter by general surgeons has become common.
