INTRODUCTION: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are characterized by chronic airway inflammation. Lack of knowledge about the correct inhalation techniques leads to poor control of both diseases. This study aimed to study the effectiveness of inhalation technique training in patients with COPD and asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 132 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were trained with the correct technique of inhalation on day 0 and at the end of 1 and 6 months...

BACKGROUND: The long-term clinical outcome of mini dental implants (MDIs) to support an overdenture is underreported especially in severely atrophic maxillae and when installed flaplessly. PURPOSE: The current report is a 5-years follow-up of the previously published 2- and 3-years clinical outcome of MDIs supporting a maxillary overdenture in narrow alveolar ridges. MDI survival, marginal bone level, peri-implant health, technical complications, and oral health related quality of life (OHIP) and respective changes over time are reported...

The pulmonary drug delivery system is a minimally invasive method of administering drugs with systemic and localised activity. Since 4000 BC, inhalation therapy has been known to the Indians. The most effective and suitable pulmonary drug delivery methods have been used for controlling diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), TB(Tuberculosis), lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. Examples of pulmonary medication delivery devices- Metered dose inhalers (MDIs), nebulizers, and dry powder inhalers (DPIs) in the latest patent 2022 that have undergone numerous advancements over the years have been focused on in this article...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiology of infectious diseases causing febrile illness varies geographically with human attributes. Periodic institutional surveillance of clinical and microbiological profiles in adding data to updating trends, modulating pharmatherapeutics, signifying possible excessive treatments and risk of drug resistance in post-chemotherapy neutropenic fever (NF) in hematological malignancy (HM) is limited. We aimed to review institutional clinical and microbiological data and explore clinical phenotype pattern groups among data...

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element which has an important role as a constituent of seleno-proteins involved in various physiological processes. Previous research in Irish adults suggests that intakes of this important nutrient are suboptimal. The aim of the present study was to estimate the current intakes and major food sources of Se by Irish adults. Mean daily intakes (MDIs) of Se were calculated using data from the National Adult Nutrition Survey which involved 1500 Irish adults aged 18-90 years...

Cholesterol crystals (CCs) in carotid plaques might be an indicator of vulnerability, although they have not been fully investigated and non-invasive methods of assessment have not been established. This study examines the validity of assessing CCs using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) that uses X-rays with different tube voltages for imaging, allowing material discrimination. We retrospectively evaluated patients who had undergone preoperative cervical computed tomography angiography and carotid endarterectomy between December 2019 and July 2020...

The aim was to assess clinical outcomes in a prospective 5-year cohort study comparing the mandible and maxilla. Material and Methods: Participants ( n = 92) who received two MDIs each and a new RPD were reviewed after one, three and five years. A total of 71 participants (82 mini-implants in the mandible; 58 in the maxilla) completed the study...

The impact of man-made climate change is already affecting millions of people worldwide. The health care sector in the US is a relevant contributor, accounting for about 8 to 10% of national greenhouse gas emissions. This special communication describes the harmful impact of propellant gases in metered dose inhalers (MDI) on the climate and summarizes and discusses current knowledge and recommendations from European countries. Dry powder inhalers (DPI) are a good alternative to MDIs and are available for all inhaler drug classes recommended in current asthma and COPD guidelines...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical impact, in terms of stress and displacement, at the level of a mandibular overdenture, on four mini dental implants (MDIs) after the loss of an implant. A three-dimensional virtual model was obtained by scanning the overdenture, and a biomechanical analysis was carried out, using the finite element method (FEM). The displacements of the overdenture and the equivalent von Mises stresses were evaluated using logarithmic scales. In the case of a mandibular overdenture on four MDIs inserted in the interforaminal area, the frontal loading generated the lowest values for the von Mises stresses, and the bilateral loading generated the least displacement when two implants were inserted in the canine area and two in the molar area...

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic disease, characterized clinically by esophageal disfunction. Topical corticosteroids (tCS), predominantly fluticasone and budesonide, are considered the effective first line treatment, as well as an option of maintenance therapy in EoE. The way that tCS are administered significantly affects their effectiveness. There is still no ready-to-use steroid drug to be applied topically to the esophagus in children-a few experimental viscous slurries (mainly of budesonide) have been shown in trials to be more effective than steroids administered via metered dose inhalers (MDIs) and swallowed...

Varespladib (LY315920) is a potent inhibitor of human group IIA phospholipase A2 (PLA2 ) originally developed to control inflammatory cascades of diseases associated with high or dysregulated levels of endogenous PLA2 . Recently, varespladib was also found to inhibit snake venom PLA2 and PLA2 -like toxins. Herein, ex vivo neuromuscular blocking activity assays were used to test the inhibitory activity of varespladib. The binding affinity between varespladib and a PLA2 -like toxin was quantified and compared with other potential inhibitors for this class of proteins...

Mini dental implants (MDIs) are an affordable alternative for overdentures in medically compromised patients with reduced bone volume. This human study reports the histomorphometric analysis of early loaded and flaplessly placed tapered, one-piece MDIs (ILZ, Southern Implants; Sa: 1.5 μm) after 7 to 11 months in function. Patients agreed to have an additional MDI placed and removed for evaluation. MDI stability was assessed via Periotest prior to implant removal. Histologic sections of four mandibular and three maxillary MDIs with surrounding bone were processed, and the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) was analyzed...

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) released from the use of metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) contribute significantly to climate change. Counterintuitively, these HFCs indirectly cause health damage to asthma and COPD patients, as climate change creates more summer smog and pollen in the air. European regulation is urgently needed to ensure that only MDIs with HFCs with a lower global warming potential will be produced in future. Meanwhile, prescribing less MDIs can have a substantial impact on the reduction of greenhouse gases...

Previous numerical studies of pulmonary drug delivery using metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) often neglected the momentum transfer from droplets to fluid. However, Kolmogorov length scales in MDI flows can be comparable to the droplet sizes in the orifice vicinity, and their interactions can modify the spray behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the two-way coupling effects on spray plume evolutions compared to one-way coupling. The influences from the mass loading, droplet size, and inhaler type were also examined...
