Alternative medicine is gaining popularity worldwide. In Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, herbal medicine plays an important role in healthcare. A 34-year-old man from Yangon, Myanmar, was admitted to the medical ward of our hospital after ingesting a herbal remedy of boiled henna leaves (Dan Ywet in Burmese). He developed hemoglobinuria leading to acute kidney injury (AKI). The insult was severe, and he underwent 5 sessions of hemodialysis. His condition improved and within 7 weeks of injury, he made a full recovery...

BACKGROUND: Despite improved health outcomes associated with arteriovenous fistulas, 80% of Americans initiate hemodialysis using a catheter, influenced by low socioeconomic status among other factors. Risk factors for incident catheter use in safety-net populations are unknown. Our objective was to identify factors associated with incident catheter use among hemodialysis patients at one safety-net hospital, with a goal of informing fistula placement initiatives targeted at safety-net populations more generally...

Background Patients receiving hemodialysis are predisposed to drug related problems (DRPs). While collaborative care (CC) models with pharmacist involvement can reduce DRP occurrence, few have examined its impact on clinical and economic outcomes. Objective To determine whether a CC model with pharmacist-provided medication review can reduce unplanned admissions and healthcare utilization in patients receiving hemodialysis, compared to usual care (UC). Setting Outpatient nephrology clinic of a tertiary hospital in Singapore...

BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) has a significant mortality rate. In developing countries, mortality due to AKI is high due to lack of access to dialysis facilities and related cost. The main goal of International Society of Nephrology (ISN) 0 by 25 initiative is to eliminate deaths due to AKI. Peritoneal dialysis is an underutilized modality in such a scenario. The aim of this study was to look into effectiveness of starting Acute stylet Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) in a resource constraint settings...

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, approximately 11% of patients on dialysis receive peritoneal dialysis (PD). Whilst PD may offer more autonomy to patients compared with hemodialysis, patient and caregiver burnout, technique failure, and peritonitis remain major challenges to the success of PD. Improvements in care and outcomes are likely to be mediated by randomized trials of innovative therapies, but will be limited if the outcomes measured and reported are not important for patients and clinicians...

INTRODUCTION: In France in 2014, there were approximately 1500 patients of reproductive age treated by dialysis. Pregnancy in these patients remains rare, however, the incidence has increased since the 2000s, with a parallel increase in the fetal survival rate. We report 2 cases of pregnancy in short-daily home hemodialysis using low dialysate flow rate. METHODS: Short-daily hemodialysis was continued at the request of the patients. The treatment consisted in an increase of frequency and duration of hemodialysis sessions, an independent blood pressure and dry weight control supervised by nephrological monitoring twice a month and a regular obstetrics follow-up...

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired chronic disorder characterized by a triad of clinical features - hemolytic anemia, pancytopenia, and thrombosis. Not many reports of renal involvement in PNH are available in literature. We present a case series of PNH with renal involvement. We present the data of PNH patients who attended to Departments of General Medicine and Nephrology at a government-run tertiary care institute in South India. The diagnosis of PNH in these patients during initial phase, between 1998 and 2004 was based on sucrose lysis and Ham's test...

Blood leakage and blood loss are serious complications during hemodialysis. From the hemodialysis survey reports, these life-threatening events occur to attract nephrology nurses and patients themselves. When the venous needle and blood line are disconnected, it takes only a few minutes for an adult patient to lose over 40% of his / her blood, which is a sufficient amount of blood loss to cause the patient to die. Therefore, we propose integrating a flexible sensor and self-organizing algorithm to design a cloud computing-based warning device for blood leakage detection...

Objectives The modern era of hemodialysis access surgery began with the publication in 1966 by Brescia et al. describing the use of a surgically created arteriovenous fistula. Since then, the number of patients on chronic hemodialysis and the number of publications dealing with hemodialysis access have steadily increased. We have chronicled the increase in publications in the medical literature dealing with hemodialysis access by evaluating the characteristics of the 50 most cited articles. Methods We queried the Science Citation Index from the years 1960-2014...

Recent data indicate AKI is very common among hospitalized Chinese patients and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is increasingly offered for treatment. However, only anecdotal information regarding CRRT's use in relation to other modalities and the specific manner in which it is prescribed exists currently. This report summarizes the results of a comprehensive physician survey designed to characterize contemporary dialytic management of AKI patients in China, especially with respect to the utilization of CRRT...
