PURPOSE: To assess the success and complication rates of glanular hypospadias or dorsal hood deformity surgery, using a modified Firlit's technique without glanuloplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 2013 and December 2015, 41 patients with glanular hypospadias or dorsalhood deformity without hypospadias and mild ventral chordee underwent surgery. Thirty-eight who completedthe 1 week and 6-month follow-up were retrospectively evaluated. Exclusion criteria were complete absence ofcorpus spongiosum resulting in very thin distal urethra, moderate to severe ventral chordee or deep urethral platethat seemed to be better served by tubularization techniques...

Lichen sclerosis (LS) is a chronic, relapsing disease with a variable presentation. In men, genitourinary LS may affect the penile foreskin, glans, meatus, and urethra. Treatment is multifaceted, ranging from pharmacotherapy to surgery. Urethral reconstruction due to stricture disease from LS is frequently plagued by a high recurrence rate. At the authors' institution, the high recurrence rate has shifted their practice toward potent steroids and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Management of recurrence includes dilation, meatotomy/meatoplasty, 1-stage and 2-stage repairs...

OBJECTIVE: Snodgrass urethroplasty remains the preferred technique in primary distal hypospadias but development of meatal stenosis often limits distal extension of the midline incision of the urethral plate (MIUP), which remains a limiting factor in reconstructing an apical neomeatus (NM). We here-in assess the cosmetic and functional outcome with distal extension of the MIUP in grafted tubularised incised-plate urethroplasty (G-TIP) repair. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study included the surgical experience of 263 cases of primary hypospadias operated upon between 2012 and 2015...

The diagnosis and management of nonvenereal diseases are always a tough challenge for the dermatologist due to lack of studies on its diagnostic criteria and standard treatment guidelines. Zoon balanitis (ZB) is one of the benign nonvenereal dermatoses, which presents as a solitary, persistent erythematous plaque usually on the glans penis primarily in the uncircumcised, middle-aged to old-aged men. Although it was described by Zoon in 1952, its etiopathogenesis still remains hypothetical. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, histopathological features, and diagnostic criteria and diagnostic methods of ZB...

INTRODUCTION: Within the veterinary world, data regarding the surgical management of hypospadias is lacking. Reports within equines have documented resective phallectomy procedures rather than urethral reconstruction. This case report documents the first ever urethroplasty for an equine hypospadias, performed by a consultant paediatric surgeon. The urethroplasty was achieved by applying the same surgical principles mastered from paediatric urology to a horse. The indication for surgery was contact dermatitis of the hind-leg, which impaired the thoroughbred foal's racing potential...

INTRODUCTION: Floppy glans syndrome (FGS) is a potential complication of penile prosthesis placement in patients with erectile dysfunction. FGS affects a very small proportion of these patients, and it can manifest in a ventral, dorsal, or lateral droop of a hypermobile glans, which can cause affected patients to complain of painful, unsatisfying, or otherwise difficult attempts at sexual intercourse. Incorrect cylinder sizing can even result in extreme conditions such as flail penis or S-shaped deformity...

BACKGROUND: We explored whether positioning patients in a 25° back-up sniffing position improved glottic views and ease of intubation. METHODS: In the first part of the study, patients were intubated in the standard supine sniffing position. In the second part, the back of the operating table was raised 25° from the horizontal by flexion of the torso at the hips while maintaining the sniffing position. The best view obtained during laryngoscopy was assessed using the Cormack and Lehane classification and Percentage of Glottic Opening (POGO) score...

BACKGROUND: In the normal human penis, the glans wings merge in the midline ventrally, but are separated by the 'septum glandis' in conjunction with the frenulum. The frenulum is also included in the formation of the distal (glanular and subcoronal) urethra, which has a special part known as the 'fossa navicularis'. This has inspired a hypospadias repair technique that simulates the development of the glanular and subcoronal urethra, which can be incorporated into the repair of all cases of hypospadias...

Penile tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon variety of genitourinary TB. It is either primary (via local spread) or secondary (spread of infection from other organs). We encountered a case of rapidly growing penile ulceration, resembling carcinoma. Biopsy revealed the classic picture of TB, which responded well to antitubercular treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To describe an original approach, inspired by the technique proposed by Kalicinsky, which has the advantages of not requiring opening of the urethra, modelling the urethra to a suitable calibre without urethral anastomosis and providing the urethra with a solid and stretchable ventral support. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We operated on three cases of anterior urethral ballooning between November 2013 and June 2014. Retrograde and micturition urethrography ruled out any urethral and disclosed the ballooning...

INTRODUCTION: Male genital degloving injuries are unusual and rarely caused by animal bite. Usually patients attend health care immediately if bitten in the genital area. Prophylactic antibiotics is routinely used (Gomes et al., 2000). A penile degloving usually begins just proximal of the coronal line and progress down to the base of the shaft. Deep erectile tissue and the spermatic cord are seldom damaged and the endogenous skin of glans usually survives (Brown and Fryer, 1957; Morey et al...

BACKGROUND: The nature of a woman's orgasm has been a source of scientific, political, and cultural debate for over a century. Since the Victorian era, the pendulum has swung from the vagina to the clitoris, and to some extent back again, with the current debate stuck over whether internal sensory structures exist in the vagina that could account for orgasms based largely on their stimulation, or whether stimulation of the external glans clitoris is always necessary for orgasm. METHOD: We review the history of the clitoral versus vaginal orgasm debate as it has evolved with conflicting ideas and data from psychiatry and psychoanalysis, epidemiology, evolutionary theory, feminist political theory, physiology, and finally neuroscience...

The white-cheeked macaque Macaca leucogenys is a recently described species that was only diagnosed based on photos, without any specimen measurements or molecular genetic diagnosis. Using DNA extracted from four newly collected skin specimens, we studied the genetic diversity and phylogenetic position of M. leucogenys using multilocus sequence data, including mitochondrial and Y chromosomal genes. Skin measurements of four individuals showed that the white-cheeked macaque is robust and larger than M. assamensis but is similar in body size to M...

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to describe the clinical presentation and the surgical management of penile epispadias associated with a buried penis in five children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a 5-year retrospective review of patients presenting with a buried penis, a congenital defect of the penile skin shaft associated with an unretractable foreskin for whom a penile epispadias was found at the time of surgery. All had undergone surgery combining a Cantwell-Ransley procedure and refashioning of the penile skin following the authors' technique...

The changes in electronic structure of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 nanowire during the discharge process were investigated by using ex situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Fe L-edge XAS attributed the potential plateau at 3.45 V vs. Li/Li+ of the discharge curve to a reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. The Mn L-edge XAS spectra exhibited the Mn2+ multiplet structure throughout the discharge process, while the crystal-field splitting was slightly enhanced in going to the fully-discharged state. The configuration-interaction full-multiplet calculation for the XAS spectra revealed that the charge-transfer effect from the O 2p to Mn 3d orbitals should be considerably small unlike that from the O 2p to Fe 3d orbitals...

INTRODUCTION: Repair of severe primary and revision hypospadias is a demanding procedure. Debate continues as to whether a two-stage approach or single-stage technique is superior. The two-stage procedure with a free graft involves penile straightening followed by application of a graft for the neourethral plate at stage one; with tubularization at stage two after graft maturation. OBJECTIVE: To report the outcomes of a single surgeon's experience with the two-stage repair using a free graft for both severe primary and revision hypospadias with long-term follow-up...
