OBJECTIVE: Penile injuries are not rare in children. Our aim is to establish their causes and to report our experience in the management of those accidents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all penile injuries presented from January 2009 to January 2017 was performed. Hemorrhage and excess of mucosa or skin remnants are the most frequent and benign injuries after circumcisions, so they were excluded from the study. RESULTS: Four groups were reported including the circumcision accident group, the traumatic accident group, the strangulation group and the electrocution group...

BACKGROUND: In male-to-female genital sex reassignment surgery, the clitoris, its prepuce, and the labia minora remain among the most difficult structures to construct. We describe the authors' clitoroplasty and vulvoplasty technique. METHODS: All patients who underwent male-to-female sex reassignment surgery at a single center, between June 2012 and June 2016, were prospectively included. The standard pedicled island neurovascular flap of the glans penis was harvested in a letter M fashion with attached preputial skin...

Aim: Pathway analysis of gastric atrophy to find new molecular prospective of disease. Background: Gastric atrophy as a process which is accompanied with "loss of glans" in stomach can be considered as a risk factor of gastric cancer. Here, the correlated biochemical pathways to the disorder have been analyzed via protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. Methods: The genes related to gastric atrophy were retrieved by STRING database and organized in a network by Cytoscape...

OBJECTIVE: The glans penis may show a deep groove (surgically favorable), or may appear flat with an absent sulcus (unfavorable). Glans dehiscence following hypospadias repair, especially after multiple surgeries, frequently results in a scarred, obliterated, or absent urethral plate. The glans penis appears to be flat and grooveless. This study reported on the outcome of a two-stage salvage repair for glans dehiscence in 49 consecutive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed for all patients who underwent repair for glans dehiscence following hypospadias repair...

Ischemic penile gangrene is an uncommon urologic condition associated with significant morbidity. Etiology of the disease is due to vasculogenic ischemia of the penile tissue. Presented are a series of images from a case of a 51-year-old morbidly obese male truck driver with idiopathic ischemic penile gangrene. The patient was evaluated with penile angiography and treated with urinary diversion via suprapubic catheter placement and serial debridement of the necrotic tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Given the poor understanding of the pathophysiology of genital lichen sclerosus (GLS) and a lack of accepted definitive diagnostic criteria, we proposed to survey pathologists regarding their understanding of GLS. We hypothesized that significant disagreement about GLS will exist. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All urologists participating in the Trauma and Urologic Reconstruction Network of Surgeons identified genitourinary (GUP) and dermatopathologists (DP) at their respective institutions who were then invited to participate in an online survey regarding their experience with diagnosing GLS, GLS pathophysiology and its relationship to urethral stricture disease...

Objective: To report on our initial experience in the management of war-related penile injuries; proper diagnosis and immediate treatment of penile injuries is essential to gain satisfactory results. Besides treating primary wounds and restoring penile function, the cosmetic result is also an important issue for the surgeon. Patients and methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Urology at Benghazi Medical Center and comprised all patients who presented with a shotgun, gunshot or explosive penile injury between February 2011 and August 2017...

Objectives: To evaluate the mid-term results of clitoroplasty through the reduction of the length and diameter of the corpus cavernosum, as well as the volume of the glans. Patients and methods: From October 2003 to July 2015, we performed 29 clitoroplasties using the described procedure. The median (range) age of the patients was 18 (3-47) months. After surgery we evaluated the volume of the clitoris, the appearance of glans, and its sensitivity to light touch, pressure, and pain...

Partial penectomy (glansectomy with/or without distal corporectomy) is an acceptable alternative for smaller distal pT3 penile carcinoma lesions in highly motivated and compliant patients. The authors describe a novel technique of neo-glans reconstruction using a tunica vaginalis (TV) testis allograft. However, due to an unclear resection margin on final histology, the patient underwent re-do surgery with a neo-glans revision using the well-established mesh split-thickness skin graft (STSG) technique. The penile length was preserved and the penile and bulbar part of the urethra was additionally mobilised in order to obtain a natural and aesthetic result for the meatus...

OBJECTIVES: To allow for organ preservation, high dose rate brachytherapy may be used in the treatment of localized penile cancer. Penile cancer is a rare malignancy, accounting for less than one percent of cancers in men in the United States. The standard treatment for localized disease is partial amputation of the penis. However, patients with T1b or T2 disease, less than 4 cm in maximum dimension and confined to the glans penis may be treated with brachytherapy as an organ-sparing approach...

Background: Neurofibromatosis is a genetically inherited disorder of the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) which mainly affects the development of nerve (neural) cell tissues, causing tumors (neurofibromas) to develop on nerves. It is the most common single gene disorder of the nervous system and inheritance is through autosomal dominance. They are usually classified into types 1 and 2, the type 1 is the commoner type and also known as superficial neurofibroma. Plexiform neurofibromas are the next most common type of tumor in individuals with type 1 neurofibroma...

This paper addresses the developmental mechanisms of formation of the mouse and human penile urethra and the possibility that two disparate mechanisms are at play. It has been suggested that the entire penile urethra of the mouse forms via direct canalization of the endodermal urethral plate. While this mechanism surely accounts for development of the proximal portion of the mouse penile urethra, we suggest that the distal portion of the mouse penile urethra forms via a series of epithelial fusion events. Through review of the recent literature in combination with new data, it is unlikely that the entire mouse urethra is formed from the endodermal urethral plate due in part to the fact that from E14 onward the urethral plate is not present in the distal aspect of the genital tubercle...

Background: Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin cannot be portrayed on the glans. It is a physiological and common condition in the pediatric age. The pathological form derives from an inflammatory or traumatic lesion. Circumcision is the most common surgical treatment of phimosis but it is a controversial practice, especially in occidental world. Methods: We enrolled 61 patients with pathological phimosis (22/balanoposthitis, 18/painful erection, 21/urinary discomfort) between 2015-2017...

Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) or Calciphylaxis is a rare disease typically seen in end stage renal disease patients on dialysis and is associated with high mortality rates, mainly because of sepsis. Medial calcification of the dermal arterioles is the characteristic histologic finding together with vascular thrombosis and ischemic necrosis. CUA involves legs, abdomen and gluteal region in majority of the patients. Herein, we present a case of CUA of the glans penis in a uremic patient. Unfortunately, the patient died of sepsis in a few weeks after initiating dialysis...

Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of a novel disposable ring versus that of the suture device in circumcision for redundant prepuce and phimosis. METHODS: We randomly assigned 470 male patients with redundant prepuce or phimosis to receive circumcision with a novel disposable ring (the DR group, n = 235) or the suture device (the SD group, n = 235) and compared the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, pain scores, wound healing time, and postoperative complications and penile appearance between the two groups of patients...
