Schonlein-Henoch purpura accounts for the majority of cases of systemic vasculitis in children. Classical presentation is characterized by palpable purpura, glomerulonephritis, arthralgias and abdominal pain. Although genitourinary manifestations, in form of testicular and scrotal involvement, have been widely described, penile involvement remains an extremely rare complication. We report a case of a 6-year-old boy who presented with purpuric rash on the glans, prepuce and penile shaft, with painful edema in the penile region...

BACKGROUND: With better designed devices and lower infection rates, satisfaction with inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement is increasingly high. However, dissatisfaction is still present and there is disagreement regarding length and sensation changes after the IPP placement. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in penile length, girth and sensitivity after IPP placement. METHODS: From August 2012 to January 2013 all patients undergoing "de novo" IPP surgery were invited to participate in this study...

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) of the penis is a very rare lesion and it is usually observed in HIV-infected patients. We introduce a case of KS of the penis in a 75 years old HIV negative patient with a peripheral T-cell lymphoma. He came to our attention with a painful ulcerated red lesion on the glans that stretched from the urethral meatus to the coronal skin. This lesion was found to be a KS balanopreputial in the classical variant. Penile KS must be included in the differential diagnosis of genital diseases especially when the clinical features of the lesion are aspecific and diagnosis can be made histologically by performing a biopsy...

Hedgehogs are small spiny-coated insectivores. Due to their low body weight, calm character, and easy maintenance, they are kept as pets. It is therefore worthwhile to care about hedgehogs' health problems and to provide pet owners with information about their reproduction. Moreover, it is necessary to be familiar with their anatomy so as to satisfy the need to improve nutrition and medical care, even surgery. This study was carried out on five adult male European hedgehogs euthanized in a chloroform chamber...

OBJECTIVE: To examine possible etiology and treatment outcomes in 21 patients with glans necrosis following penile prosthesis implantation. METHODS: Glans necrosis typically presented with a dusky glans on first post-operative day following prosthesis implantation. RESULTS: The blood supply to the glans penis consists of the dorsal arteries and the terminal branches of the spongiosal arteries. Using this cohort, we compiled pre-operative comorbidities and adjunctive surgical maneuvers that might compromise glans vascularity leading to glans necrosis...

Giant condyloma acuminatum occurs infrequently in children and adolescents. It is a challenging condition which is difficult to treat with both surgical and medical modalities. We present a case of a 15-year-old boy with giant condyloma acuminatum of the glans penis refractory to several therapeutic modalities. The lesions were treated successfully with a novel combination of Mycobacterium indicus pranii immunotherapy and acitretin. There was no recurrence of lesions after two years of follow-up.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Alprostadil (A) induces smooth-muscle relaxation by stimulating the increasing of intracellular cAMP. Intra-urethral administration is an alternative to its intra-cavernose injection in inducing erection. In order to understand the functional and anatomical basis for drug transfer, the possible communications of the corpus spongiosum with the corpora cavernosa were studied. MATERIAL OF STUDY: A "Spongiogram" (SP) was performed in 44patients (pt...

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Proximal hypospadias is one of the most challenging conditions that pediatric urologists have to deal with. Many procedures have been devised over the years, but nothing has been proven to be the best option. Although there have been some attempts at correcting severe hypospadias in one procedure, most have advocated a staged approach. The classic approach - laying penile skin or a graft within a split glans followed by glanuloplasty at the second stage - by definition requires two operations on the glans...

Anisotropy resolved multidimensional emission spectroscopy (ARMES) provides valuable insights into multi-fluorophore proteins [1]. Fluorescence anisotropy adds to the multidimensional fluorescence (MDF) dataset, information about the physical size of the fluorophores and/or the rigidity of the surrounding micro-environment. The first ARMES studies used standard thin film polarizers (TFP) that had negligible transmission between 250 and 290 nm, preventing accurate measurement of intrinsic protein fluorescence from Tyrosine and Tryptophan...

BACKGROUND: Unidentified distal crossovers, delayed distal crossovers, and impending lateral extrusion are complications of penile prosthesis implant insertion but are not as common as prosthesis infection or mechanical failure. AIM: To evaluate results of a surgical technique, the distal corporal anchoring stitch, that addresses fixation of the penile prosthesis in patients with these complications. METHODS: A lateral sub-coronal incision is used on the side where the crossover or laterally extruding cylinder should be positioned...

INTRODUCTION: Tissue engineering of corporal tissue is a new development in otherwise untreatable erectile dysfunction and in urethral reconstructions to treat hypospadias or severe urethral stricture disease. Multiple complications can arise with the current treatments, whereas engineered tissue, if well vascularized and existing of autologous cells, may lead to better results. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of literature on cell seeded based tissue engineering of corporal penile tissue...

Penile calciphylaxis is a rare phenomenon of penile necrosis observed in patients with hemodialysis-dependent end-stage renal failure. Multiple treatments have been proposed including conservative management, surgical debridement and penectomy; yet, the prognosis remains extremely poor. Here, we describe a patient with protracted resolution of dry gangrene of the glans, which failed conservative management of wound care and pain management. Radiological studies revealed extensive calcification of abdominal aorta and branching vessels including the penile arteries...

A 66-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of glans penis pain, induration, and discharge of pus. He was prescribed a course of antibiotics, but the condition persisted despite treatment. Thus, we differrentially diagnosed the patient with penile tuberculosis and pyoderma gangrenosum, and performed a biopsy of the penis. The biopsy result was thickening of the horny layer epidermis with only a foreign body granuloma composed of inflammatory cells, and did not lead to a definitive diagnosis. Thoraca-abdominal computed tomography revealed axillary lymphadenopathy with necrosis...
