OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative hemorraghe and peripartum hysterectomy are the main complications in patients presenting with a low-lying or placenta previa undergoing repeat cesarean delivery. Patients with a high probability of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) at birth also have a higher risk of intraoperative urologic injuries and the aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrasound signs and intraoperative features associated with these injuries. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study of consecutive singleton pregnancies included in a prospective cohort of patients with a history of at least one prior cesarean delivery (CD) and were diagnosed prenatally with an anterior low-lying or placenta previa at 32-36 weeks...

Hemoptysis is a complication of intrathoracic tumors, both primary and metastatic, and the risk may be increased by procedural interventions as well as Stereotactic Ablative Radiation (SAbR). The risk of hemoptysis with SAbR for lung cancer is well characterized, but there is a paucity of data about intrathoracic metastases. Here, we sought to evaluate the incidence of life-threatening/fatal hemoptysis (LTH) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) chest metastases with a focus on SAbR. We systematically evaluated patients with RCC at UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) Kidney Cancer Program (KCP) from July 2005 to March 2020...

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is a late-onset complication of radiation therapy of the pelvis with an incidence rate of approximately 5-10%. The severity of hematuria can vary from mild hematuria to more severe bleeding with clot formation and urinary retention to intractable life-threatening bleeding when blood transfusions fail to keep pace with blood loss. Management of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is based on the presenting symptoms after ruling out urinary tract infection or a tumor...

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebral vasculopathy. Disease onset is mainly sudden presenting as an ischemic stroke but also sometimes as a brain hemorraghe. Cerebral angiography is the gold standard to confirm the diagnosis. Different therapeutic approaches have been described such as conservative management or endoscopic and surgical approaches. We report the case of a young patient who was diagnosed with a brain hemorraghe following a sudden loss of consciousness.

Snake venom metalloproteinases are important toxins that play fundamental roles during envenomation. They share a structurally similar catalytic domain, but with diverse hemorrhagic capabilities. To understand the structural basis for this difference, we build and compare two dynamical models, one for the hemorrhagic atroxlysin-I from Bothrops atrox and the other for the non-hemorraghic leucurolysin-a from Bothrops leucurus. The analysis of the extended molecular dynamics simulations shows some changes in the local structure, flexibility and surface determinants that can contribute to explain the different hemorrhagic activity of the two enzymes...

AIMS: Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) represents a serious complication in acute stroke patients with pulmonary embolus (PE) as a potential outcome. Prediction of DVT may help with formulating a proper prevention strategy. To assess of the risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in acute stroke patients, we developed and validated a clinical score in a cohort study. METHODS: Incidence of Deep Venous Thrombosis after Acute Stroke in China (INVENT-China) is a multicenter prospective cohort study...

Elderly patients represent 30% of all stroke patients but remain at risk of receiving suboptimal acute care. Admission to a stroke unit rather than to a general ward and early rehabilitation are justified in elderly ischemic and hemorraghic stroke patients. Elderly patients with ischemic stroke should be given aspirin within 48 hours as it reduces mortality and rate of recurrent stroke by a small but significant amount. Age alone should not be a barrier to thrombolysis with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator for acute ischemic stroke as benefit of treatment does not seem to be diminished in elderly patients...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this survey study was to evaluate the current opinion and practice of trauma and orthopaedic surgeons in the Netherlands in the removal of implants after fracture healing. METHODS: A web-based questionnaire consisting of 44 items was sent to all active members of the Dutch Trauma Society and Dutch Orthopaedic Trauma Society to determine their habits and opinions about implant removal. RESULTS: Though implant removal is not routinely done in the Netherlands, 89% of the Dutch surgeons agreed that implant removal is a good option in case of pain or functional deficits...

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) and West Nile virus (WNV), close siblings of the Flaviviridae family, are the causative agents of Dengue hemorraghic shock or West Nile meningoencephalitis respectively. Vaccines against these two flaviviruses are currently unavailable. Interferon- Stimulated Gene 15 (ISG15), encoding an ubiquitin-like protein, is significantly induced by type I interferons or viral infections. Its roles in viral infections, however, vary with viruses, being either anti- or pro-viral...

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the effect of rabbit seminal plasma on LH secretion and ovulation using the llama animal model as an in vivo ovulation bioassay and (2) to determine the effect of llama or rabbit seminal plasma on ovulation induction in the rabbit model. In Experiment 1, llamas with a growing follicle ≥8mm in diameter were assigned randomly to one of three groups (n=5 per group) and given an intramuscular dose of 1mL of: (a) llama seminal plasma, (b) rabbit seminal plasma, or (c) phosphate buffered saline (PBS; negative control)...

The purpose of this investigation is to determine if intraosseous infusion (IO) is a suitable method for the delivery of recombinant human factor VIIa (rFVIIa) during hemorrhagic shock. The measures that were used to evaluate IO delivery suitability included: (1) determination of clinically significant local or systemic toxicity and (2) demonstration that systemic blood levels of rFVIIa increased rapidly following administration. Our results indicate that there was no evidence of significant local or systemic toxicity following infusion and that the systemic blood concentration of rFVIIa peaks immediately after the end of infusion...

We use probabilistic Boolean networks to simulate the pathogenesis of Dengue Hemorraghic Fever (DHF). Based on Chaturvedi's work, the strength of cytokine influences are modeled stochastically as inducement probabilities. We use an aggregated function approach to derive the DHF Infection Model. Two basins of attractors are observed with synchronous updating; the Null Infection cycle attractor shows an expected cross-regulation of Th1 and Th2 cytokines corresponding to the homeostasis of an uninfected person, while the DHF Infection attractor shows the onset of DHF...

Pasteurella (P.) multocida is the causative agent of numerous economically relevant diseases worldwide. These are enzootic bronchopneumonia in cattle and sheep and hemorraghic septicemia in cattle and buffaloes, Rhinitis atrophicans in swine, snuffles in rabbit, and fowl cholera. All disease complexes are associated with certain capsular and somatic antigens. Even as human pathogen P. multocida is of increasing importance, causing wound infections, and even septicemia, meningitis, and endocarditis. Despite extensive research activities including the genome analysis of one fowl cholera isolate in the year 2001 there are a lot of open questions concerning the molecular pathogenic mechanisms...
