BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the mortality and re-bleeding rates, and the risk factors involved, in a cohort of patients with previous diverticular bleeding (DB). METHODS: In 2007, data on 2462 patients with lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding were collected prospectively at several French hospitals. We studied the follow-up of patients with DB retrospectively. The following data were collected: age, mortality rates and re-bleeding rates, drug intake, surgery and comorbidities...

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of initiating low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in patients who have undergone nonoperative management (NOM) of blunt solid organ injuries (SOIs) remains controversial. We describe the safety of early initiation of chemical venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis among patients undergoing NOM of blunt SOIs. METHODS: We retrospectively studied severely injured adults who sustained blunt SOI without significant intracranial hemorrhage and underwent an initial NOM at a Canadian lead trauma hospital between 2010 and 2014...

We describe a case of uterine necrosis, following Gelitaspon(®) embolization for postpartum hemorrhage resulting from vaginal laceration. Previous cases published help to improve the safety of this effective method by showing the risk factors, as particles sizes, ultraselective embolization, prevention of infection. Controlling bleeding by surgery is the priority when hemorragy is due to laceration without uterin atony. In case of failure, embolization is an option which should be proposed without delay. Uterine necrosis should be suspected in case of postembolization septic syndrome...

Thrombin a key modulator of the complex process involved in coronary obstruction during acute ST-segment elevation myocardial is infarction. A correct and complete thrombin inhibition has to be achieved early in this setting and is complementary with fast and potent antiplatelet treatment. Bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor, has clearly shown to be an effective tool for acute coronary syndromes managed invasively, contemporarily causing fewer hemorragies. However, its efficacy has been questioned, mostly in cases of inadequate platelet inhibition and during primary PCI if compared with therapy with heparin and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors due to an increase in acute stent thrombosis...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mortality of upper gastrointestinal bleeding seems declining. Whether practice guidelines for the management of peptic ulcer bleeding are followed is unknown. We aimed to update epidemiology of peptic ulcer bleeding and to assess the adherence to guidelines in the French community. METHODS: Between March, 2005 and February, 2006, a prospective multicenter study was conducted including all patients with communautary upper gastrointestinal bleeding...

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFWRS) is an acute infectious disease with abrupt onset, high fever, renal failure and frequent hemorragies. HFWRS during the pregnancy has relatively low occurrence, with only few described cases mostly in the region of the former Soviet Union. Although, according to the data from the literature, the disease is less severe during the pregnancy, the eclampsy, stillbirth and fetal infection were also described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the summer period, June-September 2002 in the area of northeast Montenegro, and mainly among people whose job was connected with rural areas, the HFRS was observed more frequently...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Upper-gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in the elderly is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aims of this study were to determine the prognostic factors of UGIB in a large cohort of elders. METHODS: From March 2005 to February 2006, we conducted a prospective multicenter study in 53 French hospitals that consecutively enrolled 3287 patients for UGIB. A total of 1041 patients (47.8% women) were older than 74 years. Their epidemiologic characteristics and prognosis were compared with the 2246 younger patients (26...

Complications linked to drug absorption are most frequently observed in the case of treatment by vitamin K antagonist (VKA), whereas 1% of the French population is treated by VKA. Despite official recommendations renewal, these complications are not decreasing. The experience of anticoagulation clinics (AC) in other countries proves their efficiency in the reduction of two-thirds of hemorragies and thrombotic recurrences. The concept of AC strictly obliged to associate therapeutic education to the patient and the calculation of the treatment dosage...

UNLABELLED: We report a case of a 43 years old male that presented to emergency room for epigastric and mesogastric pain associated with a palpable abdominal mass. Explorative laparotomy showed a well capsulated tumour of the lesser omentum, sized 20 x 16 x 10 cm. Histologically the mass was charaterized by thick fibrous capsula, with areas of moderate cellularity alternated to areas of sclerosis, spots of hemorragies and infartual necrosis, spindle-shaped cells within collagen bundles that did not present mitotic activity or atipies and showed a low proliferation index with Ki 67 and histochemical positivity for CD 34 and negativity for C-Kit, anti-smooth cell and S100 antigen...

Abruption placenta has been a principal cause of maternal mortality by hemorragy at Dakar University Teaching Hospital. The incidence is 2.44%. It related with multiparity and age. Etiologics factors such as toxemy (7.01%) and HTA (5.26%) were founded, lack of prenatal care was notified. The complete form is observed in 71.3% and bad hemodynamic conditions in 61%. The death rate is 8.4%: morbidity is dominate by anemia, renal failure and coagulation defect. Perinatal mortality is 87.07%. Cesareans were performed on only 2...

The case of a 14-year-old girl who had severe subarachnoid bleeding as the first manifestation of a benign astrocytic tumor of the lateral aspect of the third ventricle is reported. Tumors that cause bleeding are usually neuroectodermal tumors in children and malignant tumors in adults. A review of the literature serves as the basis for a discussion of the frequency of bleeding as the first manifestation of brain tumors (1 to 10%) and of the pathogenesis of these hemorragies for which three theories (vascular, mechanical, and metabolic) have been put forward...

In this paper we gave the analysis of the height of CNS fluid pressure at patients with traumatologic subarachnoidal hemorrhagy and changes in fundus shown as preretinal hemorragies. By analysing 15 patients we could some to the conclusion that CNS fluid pressure, measured in lumbal did not follow the appearance of preretinal hemorragies. Or in other words, the appearance of preretinal hemorragies was not in direct dependance of the CNS fluid pressure. The measuring of the CNS fluid pressure was usual performed each second and third day after the patient had entered the hospital...

The rubber ligation, ambulatory treatment of hemorroids due to J. Barron, consists in the strangulation of hemorroidal packs by an elastric ring, assuring the destruction by ischemic necrosis. Widely spread in France since 1968, the treatment forms the subject of a retrospective enquiry among 30 french proctologists, after ten years of experiment. It bears on 1074 patients and 4122 ligatures. The prolapsus disappeared in 60% of the cases and disminished in 32%. The hemorragies have stopped in 69% and these results go on beyond four years in 87% of the cases...

To the list of the well known parasitic diseases which are expressed by acute abdominal syndromes and which need laparotomy, we may now add the anisakiasis. At the end of a complex cycle, the ingestion of herring can infected man : frequently the parasite is fixed at the level of the stomach, or of the ileum and seldom at the level of the bowel. Its presence gives rise to pain, hemorragy, tumor or occlusion in relation with the parietal granuloma. From one personal case the authors analyse the originality of this parasitic disease, the difficulty of its diagnosis before surgical time and its good prognosis...

Functional digestive complaints are frequent in psychiatri patients: simple constipation, which cannot be explained solely by the loss of the sensation of rectal fullness; occlusions, occasionally hemorragies; the late complication of dolichomegacolon (Bourgeois, 1973). In 160 subjects, an attempt to understand the physio-pathology were made by recording diurnal digestive motor activity using skin electrodes placed on the abdomen and extremities (electrogastroenterography or E.G.E.G.). A hypoactive E.G.E.G...
