OBJECTIVE: Currently, there are no objective metrics included in the intensive care unit (ICU) discharge decision making process. In this study, we evaluate Rothman Index(RI) data for a possible metric as part of a quality improvement project. Our objectives were to determine whether RI could predict adverse events occurring within 72 hours of ICU discharge decision, the optimal clinical cutoff value for this metric, and to determine whether there is a relation between the RI warning alert 24 hours prior to discharge and adverse events postdischarge...

The people and places children eat with can influence food consumption. This study investigates the people and places Swiss school-aged children ate with over a 7-day period and analyses the effects of eating at home with family on food consumption. Children completed a 7-day food diary documenting the foods they consumed, the people with whom they ate, and the place where they ate. Analyses were conducted for all meals and included 9911 meal occasions. Most meals (80.5%) were consumed at home with family. Generalized estimating equations were used to model the effects of the home-family dyad on the child's chance of consuming a certain food while controlling for age, gender and BMI of the child, education, nationality and BMI of the parent...

Penicillium expansum , the causal agent of blue mold, is one of the most prevalent post-harvest pathogens, infecting a wide range of crops after harvest. In response, crops have evolved various defense systems to protect themselves against this and other pathogens. Penicillium -crop interaction is a multifaceted process and mediated by pathogen- and host-derived proteins. Identification and characterization of the inter-species protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are fundamental to elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying infection processes between P...

The combination of ion mobility and mass spectrometry (MS) affords significant improvements over conventional MS/MS, especially in the characterization of isomeric metabolites due to the differences in their collision cross sections (CCS). Experimentally obtained CCS values are typically matched with theoretical CCS values from Trajectory Method (TM) and/or Projection Approximation (PA) calculations. In this paper, predictive models for CCS of deprotonated phenolics were developed using molecular descriptors and chemometric tools, stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR), principal components regression (PCR), and partial least squares regression (PLS)...

In this paper, very simple and rapid sensor has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of pico-molar level of hydrazine using Alizarin red. There was a decrease of optical intensity of the probe in the presence of hydrazine. The LOD is calculated from the linear graph between 5-100 pM as 0.66 pM of hydrazine which is well below the risk level proposed by Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry. The probe selectivity for the detection of hydrazine was tested in the presence of commonly encountered metal ions and anions...
