UNLABELLED: Nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors (NNRTI) and integrase (IN) strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) are key components of antiretroviral regimens. To explore potential interactions between NNRTI and INSTI resistance mutations, we investigated the combined effects of these mutations on drug susceptibility and fitness of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). In the absence of drug, single-mutant viruses were less fit than the wild type; viruses carrying multiple mutations were less fit than single-mutant viruses...

Because human inmmunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) receives more donor funding globally than that for all other diseases combined, some critics allege this support undermines general health care. This empirical study evaluates the impact of HIV/AIDS funding on the primary health care system in Rwanda. Using a quasi-experimental design, we randomly selected 25 rural health centers (HCs) that started comprehensive HIV/AIDS services from 2002 through 2006 as the intervention group...

The hypothesis that filgrastim (r-met-huG-CSF) activates replication of minor variants of human inmmunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) was tested by analysis of plasma quasi-species composition in 7 subjects in whom plasma HIV-1 RNA had increased during filgrastim treatment. Inferred phylogenetic trees of env sequences from 3 subjects during filgrastim treatment contained unique intrasubject subclusters that shared a most recent common ancestor with the baseline HIV-1 quasi species. Genotypes in the unique subclusters were not detected before filgrastim treatment, yet they composed 40%-70% of the plasma quasi species during treatment...

REVIEW
F Gray
HIV-associated neurological manifestations: dementia, myelopathy, and neuropathy, have become one of the commonest causes of neurological disorders in young people. Cognitive impairment develops in about 30 p. 100 of patients with AIDS and frank dementia in 15 to 20 p. 100 with an annual incidence after AIDS of approximatively 7 p. 100. Typically, the onset of dementia is relatively abrupt over a few weeks or months. The clinical manifestations of the encephalopathy now termed "HIV-dementia", suggest predominant subcortical or frontal involvement...

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of type 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) and to examine the factors associated with its transmission in a group of heterosexual couples. DESIGN: Prospective study, descriptive, from September 1985 to December 1989. SITE. A university research center and a private general hospital in the city of Merida, State of Yucatan. PATIENTS: Twenty-one adult patients (17 men and four women) with initial diagnosis of HIV-1 infection and their respective spouses...
