In the present study, distribution of steroid hormones (estradiol-17β (E2), testosterone (T), corticosteroids and progestins) in the testis and seminal vesicles (SV) of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis were investigated in two seasons (pre-spawning and spawning phases) of the reproductive cycle. The data showed that the levels of the steroid hormones varied significantly in both reproductive phases and exhibited organ-related differences. Sex steroid levels were highest in the pre-spawning phase and lowest in the spawning phase...

Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F. (TWHF) is a compound extracted from Lei Gong Teng (Thunder God Vine) that has been used to treat a variety of immune-related diseases in clinical practice, particularly in pediatrics. Nevertheless, clinical data indicated that glycosides from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (GTW) are toxic to the male reproductive system, but the mechanism is unknown. Here, the administration of a high dose of GTW for 4 weeks and a low dose for 12 weeks can reduce the body weights and testes weights in adolescent male rats...

BACKGROUND: Olfactory disorder is an early manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD), likely to be associated with abnormalities of the dopaminergic neurons in the olfactory bulb (OB); however, the causes of olfactory disorder in PD are not entirely clear. Some studies showed that melatonin (MT) and androgens (mainly testosterone, T) might participate in the pathogenesis of PD. The research aimed to investigate effects of MT or T deficiency on OB dopaminergic neurons in rats. METHODS: One hundred and twenty normal male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the control, sham operation pinealectomy (PX), sham operation gonadectomy (GDX), PX, GDX, and PX + GDX groups...

Women of reproductive age often experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms prior to the onset of menstruation. While genetics may influence the variability of these symptoms and their severity among women, the exact causes remain unknown. We hypothesized that symptom variability originates from differences in the embryonic environment and thus development caused by variation in exposure to sex hormones. We measured the second to fourth digit ratios (2D:4D) in 402 young women and investigated the potential relationships of this ratio premenstrual symptoms using a generalized linear model...

The prohormone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) circulates in vertebrate blood with the potential for actions on target tissues including the central nervous system (CNS). Many actions of DHEA require its conversion into more active products, some of which are catalyzed by the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase/isomerase (3β-HSD). Studies of birds show both expression and activity of 3β-HSD in brain and its importance in regulating social behavior. In oscine songbirds, 3β-HSD is expressed at reasonably high levels in brain, possibly linked to their complex neural circuitry controlling song...

Sexual dimorphism in prenatal development is widespread among vertebrates, including birds. Its mechanism remains unclear, although it has been attributed to the effect of maternal steroid hormones. The aim of this study was to investigate how increased levels of steroid hormones in the eggs influence early embryonic development of male and female offspring. We also asked whether maternal hormones take part in the control of sex-specific expression of the genes involved in prenatal development. We experimentally manipulated hormones' concentrations in the egg yolk by injecting zebra finch females prior to ovulation with testosterone or corticosterone...

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of ubiquitous environmental pollutants. In vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that PAHs can alter endocrine function, yet evidence from human studies is limited. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate whether environmental exposure to PAHs was associated with altered reproductive hormone levels, using repeated measures of urinary OH-PAHs as biomarkers. METHODS: We measured 10 monohydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) in repeated urine samples from 371 men in an infertility clinic in Wuhan, China...

Testosterone is a male sex hormone and low circulating testosterone levels are associated with various health disorders in men. Obesity results in reduced circulating testosterone levels in men. Previously, we demonstrated that lifestyle modifications (combination of aerobic exercise and dietary modification) increase circulating testosterone levels in overweight/obese men. However, the effect of regular aerobic exercise on serum testosterone levels remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a 12-week aerobic exercise intervention on circulating testosterone levels in normal-weight and overweight/obese men...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine disruptor compound (EDC) that aggravates testosterone-induced benign prostate hyperplasia by increasing the relative weight of the ventral and dorsolateral prostate in rats. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the exogenous estrogen effect of BPA. However, the direct effect of BPA on prostate cells has not been characterized. The present study investigated the proliferative effect and possible mechanisms of action of BPA on the prostatic epithelium of rats...
