Vascular retroperitoneal alterations are little frequent and nevertheless, more diagnosed. We presented a case of association very little frequents in which a vascular congenital malformation is related to the presence of a renal arteriovenous fistula and a left renal carcinoma in a patient who only presented hematuria. These vascular variations must be considered at the moment for planning a surgery with the purpose of making it safer and to avoid complications. The case is discussed and literature is reviewed...

OBJECTIVE: Taxanes, and platinum compounds represent the chemotherapeutic agents with the greatest activity in metastatic endometrial carcinoma. We administered the combination of paclitaxel, topotecan and carboplatin to patients with metastatic or recurrent carcinoma of the endometrium to evaluate its activity and to define its toxicity. METHODS: Thirty-nine consecutive patients were treated on an outpatient basis with paclitaxel 150 mg/m(2), administered intravenously over a 3-h period and followed by carboplatin at AUC of 5 on day 3, with both agents proceding topotecan that was given at 0...

AIMS: NF-kappaB has been demonstrated to activate proliferative, inflammatory, and angiogenic processes in ovarian cancer cells in vitro. To add translational information on the situation in vivo, we determined the expression pattern of p65, an important subunit of the classic NF-kappaB pathway, in ovarian carcinoma tissue, and investigated in vivo and in vitro whether this pathway is implicated in the known overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). METHODS: p65 siRNA, chemiluminescent NF-kappaB transcription factor assay, Taqman PCR, as well as immunoblotting were performed with OVCAR-3 ovarian cancer cells...

Cells of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were morphologically different from those of normal liver. Intermediate filaments are important in building the architecture of liver cells and are proposed to interact with other cellular components. Synemin is one of intermediate filament associated proteins which can link between intermediate filament and other cytoskeletal structures. It was suggested that synemin might play some roles in tumorigenesis of hepatocellular cancinoma. In this study, we searched the synemin expression in 18 human HCCs by immunohistochemistry...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antiangiogenic and antitumor effects of combined low-dose cyclophosphamide(CTX) and paclitaxel(PTX). METHODS: In this experiment, Lewis lung carcinoma model was established in C57BIL6 mice. Forty mice were randomly divided into four groups: control group, cyclophosphamide (170 mg/kg, q6d) group, paclitaxel (10 mg/kg, q7d) group, and cyclophosphamide plus paclitaxel group. The growth of tumor and the sideeffect of each therapy were investigated...

BACKGROUND: A radical esophagectomy with extensive lymph node dissection is the mainstay treatment for submucosal esophageal cancer, though definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has also been applied. However, the treatment outcomes have not yet been extensively investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients with submucocal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, 24 and 25 of whom had been treated by a radical esophagectomy with extensive lymph node dissection (Surgery group) and definitive CRT using 5-Fluorouracil and CDDP with concurrent radiation of 60 Gy (CRT group), respectively, formed the study cohort...

BACKGROUND: The E-cadherin gene (CDH1) maps, at chromosome 16q22.1, a region often associated with loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in human breast cancer. LOH at this site is thought to lead to loss of function of this tumor suppressor gene and was correlated with decreased disease-free survival, poor prognosis, and metastasis. Differential CpG island methylation in the promoter region of the CDH1 gene might be an alternative way for the loss of expression and function of E-cadherin, leading to loss of tissue integrity, an essential step in tumor progression...

Cysteine, serine and metalloproteinases and their respective inhibitors are involved in tumor cell invasion and may have prognostic value for the outcome of malignant disease. The aim of the study was to compare the expression of new potential biological tumor markers, the lysosomal cysteine proteinases and their endogenous inhibitors, with that of the serine proteinases and their inhibitors in breast cancinoma and to relate their levels to the clinicopathological factors of the disease. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were used to measure cysteine cathepsin B (CatB) and cathepsin L (CatL) and their inhibitors, stefin A (StA) and stefin B (StB), together with urokinase (u-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), in 150 cytosols of primary invasive breast carcinoma...

Taxol is used in chemotherapy regimens against breast and ovarian cancer. Treatment of tumor model cell lines with taxol induces apoptosis, but exact mechanism is not sufficiently understood. Our results demonstrate that in response to taxol, various cell types differentially utilize distinct apoptotic pathways. Using MCF7 breast carcinoma cells transfected with caspase-3 gene, we showed that taxol-induced apoptosis occurred in the absence of caspase-3 and caspase-9 activation. Similar results were obtained with ovarian SKOV3 carcinoma cells, expressing high level of endogenous caspase-3...

Growth inhibition by the TGF-beta s has been extensively studied in both normal and transformed mammary epithelial cells. It has been proposed that loss of autocrine TGF-beta mediated growth regulation is a critical event in breast tumorigenesis and several lines of in vitro and in vivo data support this hypothesis. However, a positive association between the expression of TGF-beta s by tumor cells and the progression or maintenance of breast cancinoma cells has been observed in many studies in in vivo tumor models...

The preliminary results of an on-going SAKK study on metastasising mammary cancinoma are reported. At the time of writing 210 cases are already evaluable. This study seeks to investigate the question of the necessary intensity of polychemotherapy and also the problem of whether cytostatic therapy should be begun at the same time as hormonal therapy or just after failure of this measure. At present no definite answer is available. The results point to a new, possibly important aspect of the treatment of metastasising mammary carcinoma...
