The skin is the most requested product of ratite slaughter and 'first-rate' ratite's skin has a high economic market. Ostrich hide is tanned in South Africa and sold all over the world. Besides, the ostrich meat is considered a niche production in the marketplace, thus allowing for another pro t for the ostrich breeding. Theorical analysis of skinning process has been carried out, and an automatic measurement system has been designed to record the drawing-force on the animal's body during skinning tests. The aim of this study was to indentify the best animal position and provide values of drawing-force in order to design a speci c machine for ostrich skinning...

We describe an unusual clinical association of disseminated histoplasmosis with reactive hemophagocytic syndrome. We report the case of a new HIV-positive patient with reconstitution inflammatory syndrome like reactive hemophagocytic syndrome associated with disseminated histoplasmosis. We describe the clinical case, the procedures performed, the treatment provided and the patient's evolution. A figure of liver biopsy Grocott's silver methenamine stain that shows lots of uniform ovoid yeasts in portal spaces' macrophages that supports the diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis in our case...

Lynch Syndrome (LS) is the most common dominantly inherited colorectal cancer (CRC) predisposition and is caused by a heterozygous germline defect in one of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, or PMS2. High microsatellite instability (MSI-H) and loss of MMR protein expression in tumours reflecting a defective MMR are indicators for LS, as well as a positive family history of early onset CRC. MSH2 and MSH6 form a major functional heterodimer, and MSH3 is an alternative binding partner for MSH2...

During the temporal delay between the filler and gap sites in long-distance dependencies, the "active filler" strategy can be implemented in two ways: the filler phrase can be actively maintained in working memory ("maintenance account"), or it can be retrieved only when the parser posits a gap ("retrieval account"). The current study tested whether filler content is maintained during the processing of dependencies. Using a self-paced reading paradigm, we compared reading times on a noun phrase (NP) between the filler and gap sites in object relative clauses, to reading times on an NP between the antecedent and ellipsis sites in ellipsis sentences...

The prevalence of overexpression and amplification of the proto-oncogene mesenchymal epithelial transition (MET) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) varies greatly in the literature. Since MET is a potential treatment target, knowledge of its prevalence and prognostic importance is crucial. We investigated MET expression and gene status in 735 NSCLC cases using tissue microarrays. Prognostic significance as well as correlations with various clinico-pathological parameters were evaluated. The prevalence of MET overexpression was 17% and MET amplification was present in 2...

Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is known to produce intracellular mucin and has been recognized in single-case reports to show extracellular mucin production, as well. This latter morphology is not only rare but must also be under- or misdiagnosed. The aim was to better characterize this entity. Cases of lobular cancers demonstrating extracellular mucin formation were identified in a multi-institutional effort and their clinical and morphologic features were assessed. Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize the E-cadherin-membrane complex, neuroendocrine differentiation, and to some extent, mucin formation...

Little is published on risk factors associated with bovine brucellosis in Pacific island communities. The 2009 re-emergence of bovine brucellosis in Fiji enabled us to do an interview-based questionnaire survey of 81 farms in the Wainivesi locality of the Tailevu province on the main island of Fiji to investigate what risk factors could have played a role in the re-emergence of the disease. The survey was conducted on 68 farms that had no positive cases of bovine brucellosis and on 13 farms in the same area where cattle had returned a positive result to the Brucella Rose Bengal test...

The contamination status of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were investigated in 64 tapwater samples collected from 17 cities and 45 surface water samples from adjacent areas in the eastern China. The total PFAS concentrations in tapwater ranged from 1.4 to 175 ng/L; relatively higher PFAS levels were observed in samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta region, which was similar to the geographical distribution pattern of PFAS levels observed in rivers and lakes. The highest total PFASs in tapwater was found in Changshu, where several fluorine-related industries are located, whereas the lowest was observed in Beijing...

PURPOSE: Aberrant expression of human sodium iodide symporter (NIS) in breast cancer (BC) is well documented but the transcription factors (TF) regulating its aberrant expression is poorly known. We identify the presence of three p53 binding sites on the human NIS promoter sequence by conducting genome-wide TF analysis, and further investigate their regulatory role. METHODS: The differences in transcription and translation were measured by real-time PCR, luciferase reporter assay, site-directed mutagenesis, in vivo optical imaging, and chromatin immunoprecipitation...

PURPOSE: Cyclin D1 has a central role in cell cycle control and is an important component of estrogen regulation of cell cycle progression. We have previously shown that high cyclin D expression is related to aggressive features of ER-positive but not ER-negative breast cancer. The aims of the present study were to validate this differential ER-related effect and furthermore explore the relationship between cyclin D overexpression and CCND1 gene amplification status in a node-negative breast cancer case-control study...

The Canadian National Breast Screening Studies were compromised by an unblinded allocation process and poor quality mammography. Contrary to the requirement that allocation in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) be blinded to avoid any possible intentional or unintentional subversion of a random allocation, all women in the CNBSS trials underwent a clinical breast examination prior to assignment to the study arm or the usual care arm. Women with abnormal clinical breast examinations were identified, and this information was available to the coordinators who then assigned the women on open lists...

The nucleus is composed of multiple compartments and domains, which directly or indirectly influence many cellular processes including gene expression, RNA splicing and maturation, protein post-translational modifications, and chromosome segregation. Nuclear-replicating viruses, especially herpesviruses, have co-evolved with the cell, adopting strategies to counteract and eventually hijack this hostile environment for their own benefit. This allows them to persist in the host for the entire life of an individual and to ensure their maintenance in the target species...

PURPOSE: Tall cell (TCV) and diffuse sclerosing (DSV) variants are aggressive variants of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). We compared the risk of recurrent/persistent disease in patients with TCV, DSV and classical PTC (cPTC) and evaluated the prognostic accuracy of initial vs. ongoing risk stratification. METHODS: A consecutive series of DSV (n = 54), TCV (n = 72) and cPTC (n = 184) patients was retrospectively analyzed. TCV and DSV patients were first risk stratified for recurrent/persistent disease without considering the histotype as a risk factor and subsequently, 6-24 months after initial treatment, re-classified on the basis of the response to therapy (ongoing risk stratification)...

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) perfusion has been established as a useful imaging modality for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there are several limitations when applying standard, ECG-gated stress/rest perfusion CMR to patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). In this study we investigate an approach with no ECG gating and a rapid rest/stress perfusion protocol to determine its accuracy for detection of CAD in patients with AF. 26 patients with AF underwent a rapid rest/regadenoson stress CMR perfusion imaging protocol, and all patients had X-ray coronary angiography...

Patients presenting to the emergency department with acute chest pain, negative conventional troponin and electrocardiogram require serial testing to rule out acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We studied the association of highly sensitive troponin (hsTn) I with vulnerable plaque features as detected by coronary dual source computed tomography angiography (DSCTA) and determined whether hsTn I at the time of presentation combined with early DSCTA could improve classification of patients as high-risk or low risk for ACS...

5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) fluorescence-guided surgery is widely used for detection and planning of resection of malignant gliomas and other brain tumors. However, no reports have described 5-ALA fluorescence-guided surgery or direct visualization of germ cell tumors. Here, we report two cases of germ cell tumors in which a positive 5-ALA fluorescent signal was visualized with a neuroendoscope. Both cases had a tumor in the pineal region that was associated with hydrocephalus. The patients underwent surgery after administration of 5-ALA...

As long-lived marine mammals found throughout the temperate coastal waters of the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) have become an invaluable sentinel of food-web contamination. Their relatively high trophic position predisposes harbour seals to the accumulation of harmful levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). We obtained skin/blubber biopsy samples from live-captured young harbour seals from various sites in the northeastern Pacific (British Columbia, Canada, and Washington State, USA) as well as the northwestern Atlantic (Newfoundland and Quebec, Canada)...

Pratylenchus neglectus and Meloidogyne chitwoodi are the main plant-parasitic nematodes in potato crops of the San Luis Valley, Colorado. Bacterial microbiome (16S rRNA copies per gram of soil) and nematode communities (nematodes per 200 g of soil) from five different potato farms were analyzed to determine negative and positive correlations between any bacterial genus and P. neglectus and M. chitwoodi. Farms showed differences in bacterial communities, percentage of bacterivorous and fungivorous nematodes, and numbers of P...
