This study aims to produce electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) membrane as the alternative supporting medium for a separation of crude polysaccharides by electrophoresis and a screening of their antibacterial activity. Two Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains AVA-1T and AVA-2, were isolated from the root of Aloe vera (L.) Brum.f. in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. The strains contained cytochrome oxidase and catalase. They grew in 4 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH range 6.0-9.0 (optimally at pH 7) and at 20-42 ºC (optimally at 30-37 ºC). Recent data suggest that herbal and dietary supplements are the second most common cause of liver injury. We herein report a case of acute liver injury in a 68-year old female caused by ingestion of Aloe vera. Upon discontinuation of the oral Aloe vera, liver function tests (LFT) returned to normal levels. Thus, it is crucial to consider the use of herbal products as causative agents of acute liver injury.

A new compound, 9-dihydroxyl-2'-O-(Z)-cinnamoyl-7-methoxy-aloesin (1), and eight known compounds (2-9) were isolated from Aloe vera. Their structures were elucidated using 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra. Compound 9 exhibited reversible competitive inhibitory activity against the enzyme tyrosinase, with an IC50 value of 9.8 ± 0.9 µM.
