The authors measured the changes of hemodynamics in 72 patients. It was also estimated a blood oxygenation and volume of liquid sectors of the organism in different degree of obesity before and after liposuction of the large volume. It was shown, that this operation facilitated to an improvement of respiratory lung function due to changes of pulmonary circulation.

Decreasing the amount of oxygen in the tissues under hypoxic and ischemic conditions, observed at a number of pathologic processes, inevitably leads to their damage. One of the main causes of cell damage and death is a violation of the systems maintaining ionic balance. Na,K-ATPaseis a basic ion-transporting protein of animal cell plasma membrane and inhibition of the Na,K-ATPase activity at lower concentrations of oxygen is one of the earliest and most critical events for cell viability. Currently there is an active search for modulators of Na,K-ATPase activity...

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a worldwide prevalent condition that exhibits a large variety of signs and symptoms of esophageal or extra-esophageal nature and can be related to the esophagic adenocarcinoma. In the last few years, greater importance has been given to the influence of physical exercises on it. Some recent investigations, though showing conflicting results, point to an exacerbation of gastroesophageal reflux during physical exercises. AIM: To evaluate the influence of physical activities in patients presenting with erosive and non erosive disease by ergometric stress testing and influence of the lower esophageal sphincter tonus and body mass index during this situation...

The nutritional formulations of high protein content, provided by a flour mixture from two Andean cultures, quinua (Chenopodium quinua Willd) and lupino (Lupinus albus L), with two traditional cereals, maize (Zea mays L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.), entailed to the preparation of a "sweet mixture" for the elaboration of "queques" and another "dessert mixture" flavoured with banana, that can be prepared with water or milk, constituted a good alternative as food supplement for the nutrition of children aged 6-24 months who suffer from celiac disease, since they contribute to the quality improvement of the protein, by essential amino acids compensation, they are of low cost and allow an increase in availability of products for gluten-intolerant children...

OBJECTIVE: To compare in a crossover study pulmonary mechanics, oxigenation index (PaO(2)/FiO(2)), and partial pressure of CO(2) in arterial blood (PaCO(2)) in patients with mechanical ventilation in two controlled ventilatory modes. SETTING: Intensive care unit of a university affiliated hospital. DESIGN: Prospective crossover clinical trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total 114 consecutive patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) under controlled mechanical ventilation with SaO(2) >90% and FiO(2) <0...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to know the effects of endotracheal suction in respiratory mechanics and oxigenation of patients with mechanical ventilation. METHODS: 13 children were studied in the pediatric intensive care unit of Hospital São Paulo, age between 47 days and 5 years old, male and female, surgical and clinic pathology, intubated by cuffed endotracheal tube, sedated and paralyzed few minutes before measurements, under previous established suction routine without preventive maneuvers, followed by a continuous monitoring of oxygenation, ventilation and respiratory mechanics under identical ventilatory sets...

Some applications of indirect calorimetry to sports medicine are discussed and exemplified by case reports. In particular, it is suggested that oxigen consumption can be employed to assess the effects of physical activity on fat-free tissues and that the respiratory quotient may offer some insights into the food habits of athletes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation has been suggested to represent an important regulatory mechanism of platelet reactivity in both physiologic and pathologic conditions; consistent with this hypothesis is the observation that free-radical scavengers may inhibit platelet activation, thus contributing to the regulation of their reactivity. The purpose of the present study is to study the in vitro effects of amifostine (WR-2721, ethyol ), a selective cytoprotective agent for normal tissues against the toxicities of chemotherapy and radiation, on platelet activation induced by the physiologic agonists ADP, collagen and PAF...

Determination was made of cardiac output (using the stain dilution technique), gases in blood and serum lactate levels in eight infants with hypovolemic shock and sixteen with septic shock. The data were carried to indexes (values per square meter of body surface). In children with hypovolemic shock the cardiac index was 1.88 +/- 0.031/min/m,2 while in septic patients it was 4.02 +/- 1.011/min/m2. The peripheral resistances were 3,079 din/min/cm.5 in hypovolemic cases and 907 din/min in the septic. In both groups serum lactante levels rised close to 4 mM 61...

In the present study we used a model of underperfusion or anoxia followed by reperfusion to assess the role of glycolysis by substituting pyruvate or mannitol for glucose as substrate. Hearts were removed from male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-400 g) and perfused by the technique of Langendorff. The perfusate was Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer gassed with 95% O2, 5% CO2 or with 95% N2, 5% CO2 mixture and containing substrates as can be seen in the figures. The mild ischemia was obtained by reducing the perfusion pressure by 70%, from 60-70 cm H2O to 10-20 cm H2O...

Arterial pressure, venous outflow from the isolated m. gastrocnemius, and oxigenation of arterial and muscular venous blood during and after the 7-sec contraction elicited by electrical stimulation of peripheral end of cut sciatic nerve (24/sec), were studied in anesthetized cats. Hypoxia was induced by artificial ventilation of lungs with 7% oxygen in nitrogen. The data obtained showed a conformity of levels of O2 consumption to the levels of blood flow and a closer connection of O2 consumption with the flow than with oxygen extraction from the blood...

A simple self prepared IMV system (intermittant mandatory ventilation system) is described. Only original parts of Bird are used. The system is in fact a combination of the original Bird-PEEP-system with the CPAP-system described by us [1]. The function, mounting and working of the IMV system is described. With this combined system it is now possible to apply different forms of assisted or nonassisted ventilation (CPAP, PEEP, IMV) utilizing the same system making by minor modifications. The FIO2 can be exactly regulated...
