Achilles tendinopathy can be a chronic disabling condition affecting both athletic and sedentary patients. Multiple new treatment approaches have developed, including shock wave therapy and various types of injection. One of the novel treatment methods used is the injection of Aethoxysklerol or polidocanol, a sclerosing substance injected under ultrasound guidance targeting areas of neovascularisation. We report the case of a 78-year-old lady who suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture following injection of Aethoxysklerol...

RATIONALE: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) lung disease is an ideal candidate for a genetic therapy. We have previously shown that pre-conditioning with lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) prior to lentiviral (LV) vector delivery results in long-term in vivo gene expression in the airway epithelium of CF mice. We hypothesise that this outcome is largely due to transduction of airway basal cells that in turn pass the transgene onto their progeny. OBJECTIVES: The aim of these studies was to confirm if the in vivo delivery of a HIV-1 VSV-G pseudotyped LV vector following LPC airway conditioning results in transduction of mouse airway basal cells in situ and if the transgene is passed onto their progeny...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Until now, no study has focused exclusively on low-flow retrobulbar intraconal venous malformations (RIVMs) which may require treatment due to cosmetic defect, pain, and visual dysfunction. The treatment for RIVMs which surround the optic nerve remains challenging. This case series aimed to evaluate the technical feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of percutaneous sclerotherapy with polidocanol for low-flow RIVMs, using local anesthesia. METHOD: This is a prospective, non-comparative, single-center, interventional case series...

Achilles tendinopathy at the calcaneal insertion is classified into insertional tendinopathy, retrocalcaneal and superficial bursitis. The aim of this study was to present the current evidence on conservative and surgical treatment of insertional tendinopathy of the Achilles tendon. Conservative first-line therapy includes reduction of activity levels, administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), adaptation of footwear, heel wedges and orthoses or immobilization. In addition, further conservative therapy options are also available...

Importance: Reticular veins are subdermal veins located in the lower limbs and are mainly associated with aesthetic complaints. Although sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for reticular veins in the lower limbs, no consensus has been reached regarding to the optimal sclerosant. Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of 2 sclerosants used to treat reticular veins: 0.2% polidocanol diluted in 70% hypertonic glucose (HG) (group 1) vs 75% HG alone (group 2)...

Objective: Despite improved recognition of risk factors, plastic surgeons commonly encounter seromas postoperatively and must decide upon management. Current recommendations for minimally invasive, chemical management originate from the literature on management of pneumothorax and pleural effusions. A handful of published reports have suggested the efficacy of sclerotherapy in seroma management. The aim of this study was to assess the literature on the use of sclerosants to treat subcutaneous fluid collections...

Polydisperse PEGs are ubiquitously used in pharmaceutical industry and biomedical research. However, the monodispersity in PEGs may play a role in the development of safe and effective PEGylated small molecular drugs. Here, to avoid the polydispersity in polidocanol, the active ingredient in a clinically used drug, a macrocyclic sulfate-based strategy for the efficient and scalable synthesis of monodisperse polidocanols, their sulfates, and their methylated derivatives, was developed. TLC and HPLC analysis indicated a complex mixture in regular polidocanol and high purities in monodisperse polidocanols and their derivatives...

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are low-flow congenital lesions that consist of cysts of varying size. Sclerotherapy with intralesional bleomycin and OK-432 has been reported to yield dramatically beneficial results for this disorder. However, inflammation-related symptoms are often seen after treatment with these sclerosing agents. On the other hand, polidocanol (POL) is reportedly associated with fewer allergic and inflammatory reactions. Up to now, however, very few reports have documented the use of POL microfoam for treatment of LMs...

The endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of the insufficient saphenous vein has similar results to open conventional surgery, but less morbidity. The echo-guided polidocanol foam sclerotherapy technique has been used for the same purpose. The combined techniques may play a role for more severe diseases, such as those with varicose ulcers. An EVLA device (called VELAS) has been developed in the Optics and Photonics Research Center of USP-São Carlos in agreement with FMB-UNESP. In this study, we present the preliminary results of the VELAS device (MMO 980nm diode) in patients with chronic venous ulcer, associated with echo-guided polidocanol foam sclerotherapy for the treatment of varicosities...
