BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of the minor neurocognitive diseases in the clinical course of dementia before the clinical symptoms' appearance is the holy grail of neuropsychological research. The R4Alz battery is a novel and valid tool that was designed to assess cognitive control in people with minor cognitive disorders. The aim of the current study is the R4Alz battery's extension (namely R4Alz-R), enhanced by the design and administration of extra episodic memory tasks, as well as extra cognitive control tasks, towards improving the overall R4Alz discriminant validity...

BACKGROUND: Gambling is common and there is growing concern about its public health implications. Little is known about how gambling differs in people with minority sexual identities. We sought to understand whether lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals differ from non-LGB individuals in terms of gambling and associated characteristics. METHODS: A total of 534 participants age 18 to 29 who gambled at least 5 times in the preceding year undertook clinical and neurocognitive evaluations...

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders are diagnosed through observations of psychiatrists according to diagnostic criteria such as the DSM-5. Such observations, however, are mainly based on each psychiatrist's level of experience and often lack objectivity, potentially leading to disagreements among psychiatrists. In contrast, specific linguistic features can be observed in some psychiatric disorders, such as a loosening of associations in schizophrenia. Some studies explored biomarkers, but biomarkers have yet to be used in clinical practice...

Natural history studies of pediatric rare neurometabolic diseases are important to understand disease pathophysiology and to inform clinical trial outcome measures. Some data collections require sedation given participants' age and neurocognitive impairment. To evaluate the safety of sedation for research procedures, we reviewed medical records between April 2017 and October 2019 from a natural history study for CLN3 (NCT03307304) and one for GM1 gangliosidosis (NCT00029965). Twenty-two CLN3 individuals underwent 28 anesthetic events (age median 11...

BACKGROUND: A fraction of patients with asymptomatic to mild/moderate acute COVID-19 disease report cognitive deficits as part of the post-COVID-19 syndrome. This study aimed to assess the neuropsychological profile of these patients. METHODS: Assessment at baseline (three months or more following acute COVID-19) of a monocentric prospective cohort of patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome. Multidomain neuropsychological tests were performed, and questionnaires on depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep, and general health status were administered...

There are many obstacles to screening for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), including the influence of various sociodemographic effects on screening measures. This study examined possible racial bias on the HIV Dementia Scale (HDS) in screening for HAND among 39 Black and 84 White persons living with HIV (PLWH). Black PLWH had significantly lower raw HDS scores than White PLWH, which was mediated by lower oral word reading scores. Nevertheless, HDS scores were comparably predictive of clinical HAND diagnoses for Black and White PLWH as determined by a comprehensive battery; overall, individuals who failed the HDS were three times as likely to have HAND as compared to those who performed within normal limits (sensitivity = ...

Alcohol use is a leading cause of mortality, brain morbidity, neurological complications and minor to major neurocognitive disorders. Alcohol-related neurocognitive disorders are consecutive to the direct effect of chronic and excessive alcohol use, but not only. Indeed, patients with severe alcohol use disorders (AUD) associated with pharmacological dependence suffer from repetitive events of alcohol withdrawal (AW). If those AW are not managed by adequate medical and pharmacological treatment, they may evolve into severe AW, or be complicated by epileptic seizure or delirium tremens (DT)...

Growing evidence supports the presence of social cognition deficits and social behavior alterations in major and minor neurocognitive disorders (NCDs). Even though the ability to identify socio-emotional changes has significantly improved in recent years, there is still no specific treatment available. Thus, we explored evidence of drug therapies targeting social cognition alterations in NCDs. Papers were selected according to PRISMA guidelines by searching on the PubMed and Scopus databases. Only papers reporting information on pharmacological interventions for the treatment of social cognition and/or social behavioral changes in major and/or minor NCDs were included...

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Subgroups with distinct levels of neurocognitive functioning exist in children of parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. However, studies investigating the temporal stability of subgroup membership are currently lacking. We hypothesized that a minority of children at familial high-risk of schizophrenia (FHR-SZ) or bipolar disorder (FHR-BP) would transition to a different neurocognitive subgroup from age 7 to 11 and that most transitions would be to a more impaired subgroup...

Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are markers of abnormalities in early foetal development and are well established findings in schizophrenia. It has been suggested that neurodevelopmental abnormalities might play a role not only in schizophrenia but also in bipolar disorder (BD). Therefore, according to neurodevelopmental theory of BD, one might expect increased prevalence of MPAs in BD. A meta-analysis of 11 studies was conducted to quantitatively review MPAs in BD in comparison to schizophrenia and healthy controls...

PURPOSE: ZMYND8 encodes a multidomain protein that serves as a central interactive hub for coordinating critical roles in transcription regulation, chromatin remodeling, regulation of super-enhancers, DNA damage response and tumor suppression. METHODS: An international collaboration, exome sequencing, molecular modeling, yeast two-hybrid assays, analysis of available transcriptomic data and a knockdown Drosophila model were used to characterize the ZMYND8 variants...

Neurological soft signs (NSS) are a common feature of severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia but are also prevalent in organic brain diseases like HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) or Alzheimer's disease. While distinct associations between NSS, neurocognition, and cerebral regions were demonstrated in schizophrenia, these associations still have to be elucidated in HIV. Therefore, we investigated 36 persons with HIV of whom 16 were neurocognitively healthy and 20 were diagnosed with HAND...

Cognitive disorders are frequently found during late-life depression (LLD). Many cognitive functions may be concerned and can be explained by frontostriatal brain circuits and hippocampus dysfunctions partly through abnormalities related to cerebrovascular diseases. It seems important to distinguish between early and late onset depression, the cognitive characterisation and aetiopathogenesis of which differ in some respects. Cognitive impairment may represent markers of depression, but it is still unclear whether potential biomarkers of disease should be considered as markers of condition, trait or risk factors...
