The physical interactions between organisms and their environment ultimately shape their rate of speciation and adaptive radiation, but the contributions of biomechanics to evolutionary divergence are frequently overlooked. Here we investigated an adaptive radiation of Cyprinodon pupfishes to measure the relationship between feeding kinematics and performance during adaptation to a novel trophic niche, lepidophagy, in which a predator removes only the scales, mucus, and sometimes tissue from their prey using scraping and biting attacks...

Deep bite is usually treated by intrusion of the anterior teeth, extrusion of the posterior teeth, or a combination thereof. Various traditional methods have been used to correct deep bites, but they can cause negative side effects. Recently, temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) have been used to intrude the anterior teeth simply and efficiently without side effects. The amount of incisal exposure at rest should be considered as the first factor in determining which tooth segment should be intruded to correct a deep bite...

Deep learning techniques have been investigated for the computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound images. However, most existing thyroid nodule detection methods were simply based on static ultrasound images, which cannot well explore spatial and temporal information following the clinical examination process. In this paper, we propose a novel video-based semi-supervised framework for ultrasound thyroid nodule detection. Especially, considering clinical examinations that need to detect thyroid nodules at the ultrasonic probe positions, we first construct an adjacent frame guided detection backbone network by using adjacent supporting reference frames...

OBJECTIVES: Since rabies is lethal once symptoms appear, its prevention including community awareness, mass dog vaccination and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is crucial. Although safe and potent rabies vaccines have long been available, the global rabies burden is still high and access to adequately-delivered PEP remains challenging. Here we offer healthcare providers up-to-date, simple, exhaustive, visual guidance on how to perform PEP steps correctly. PROTOCOL: PEP consists of 1) washing the wound with water and soap for 15 min, 2) assessing the need for rabies biologicals based on specific criteria; 3) administering, if required, rabies immunoglobulin or monoclonal antibodies deep in and around all wounds; 4) starting, if necessary, the WHO-recommended intradermal 1-week vaccination regimen; 5) informing patients adequately throughout the PEP process to increase compliance and avoid dangerous misconceptions about animal bite treatment and rabies risk...

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance image only (MRI-only) simulation for head and neck (H&N) radiotherapy (RT) could allow for single-image modality planning with excellent soft tissue contrast. In the MRI-only simulation workflow, synthetic computed tomography (sCT) is generated from MRI to provide electron density information for dose calculation. Bone/air regions produce little MRI signal which could lead to electron density misclassification in sCT. Establishing the dosimetric impact of this error could inform quality assurance (QA) procedures using MRI-only RT planning or compensatory methods for accurate dosimetric calculation...

This study aimed to apply finite element analysis to evaluate the effects of pile materials with different elastic moduli and cement materials on the stress distribution between the remaining tooth tissue and cryptic fracture defects. A three-dimensional finite element model was established for 20 maxillary first molars with hidden fissures and mesial tongue-tip defects. Two levels of hidden cracks and three types of pile and adhesive materials were used in the design. The stress distribution and maximum stress peak in the remaining tooth tissue and crack defects were determined by simulating the normal bite, maximum bite, and lateral movement forces...

Deep bite is a malocclusion phenotype, defined as the misalignment in the vertical dimension of teeth and jaws and characterized by excessive overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. Numerous factors, including genetics, environmental factors, and behavioral ones, might contribute to deep bite. In this study, we discuss the current clinical treatment strategies for deep bite, summarize the already published findings of genetic analysis associated with this complex phenotype, and their constraints...

Pediatric trauma surgeons frequently encounter severe injuries from animal bites, with dog bites being especially prevalent in children, often leading to facial injuries. This paper details the case of a six-year-old male who suffered a dog bite resulting in a rare proximal right brachial artery injury. The bite caused deep lacerations and avulsion injuries, prompting admission to the trauma center, where nonpalpable right radial and ulnar pulses and arm weakness were observed. Surgical intervention, including wound exploration and brachial artery repair using a saphenous vein graft, successfully restored vascular perfusion...

BACKGROUND Hemangiomas are defined as benign soft tissue vascular tumors that are histologically classified as capillary, cavernous, or mixed types. Hemangiomas can also be described based on clinical appearance as superficial, mixed, or deep lesions. Following a thorough search, only 3 case reports of superficial protruding lip mass were found in the literature. Other cases of tongue hemangioma have been reported in infants or young toddlers, and only rarely in adults. CASE REPORT The first case was a 43-year-old pregnant woman, with an unremarkable medical and surgical history, in the second trimester who presented to the Otolaryngology Clinic with a chief concern of a progressively growing lesion, measuring 0...

Proatheris superciliaris, the lowland swamp viper, has a limited distribution along lakeshores and rivers in Malawi, Southern Tanzania, and central Mozambique. Its venom is known to be procoagulant. Only five P. superciliaris bites have been reported, all inflicted by captive snakes, and none was fatal. Here we present a case of sudden death following a bite by Proatheris superciliaris in rural Malawi that cannot be attributed to envenoming. A healthy 32-year-old woman was planting rice in a flooded rice paddy field when she suddenly told her sister in a quiet voice that she had been bitten by a snake...

Motion and aggressive behaviors in pigs provide important information for the study of social hierarchies in pigs and can be used as a selection indicator for pig health and aggression parameters. However, relying only on visual observation or surveillance video to record the number of aggressive acts is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and lasts for only a short period of time. Manual observation is too short compared to the growth cycle of pigs, and complete recording is impractical in large farms. In addition, due to the complex process of assessing the intensity of pig aggression, manual recording is highly influenced by human subjective vision...

OBJECTIVES: An anterior bite plane (ABP) is an orthodontic appliance that prevents posterior teeth from making contact. This appliance's functional concept is to reduce muscle activity, overcome deep overbite, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMD). However, ABP treatment for malocclusion frequently results in unfavorable reversible and irreversible long-term effects. This problem presents difficulties for dentists in developing an appropriate treatment modification plan in order to achieve the best results...

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are typical point sources of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) released into the environment. The suspect and nontarget screening based on gas chromatography or liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry were performed on atmosphere, wastewater, and sludge samples collected from two WWTPs in Tianjin to discover emerging PFAS and their fate in this study. A total of 40 PFAS (14 neutral and 26 ionic) and 64 PFAS were identified in the atmosphere and wastewater/sludge, respectively, among which 5 short-chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide derivatives, 4 ionic PFAS, and 15 aqueous film-forming foam-related cationic or zwitterionic PFAS have rarely or never been reported in WWTPs in China...

BACKGROUND: The treatment of follicular lymphoma (FL) has previously centered on chemoimmunotherapy, which can be disadvantageous due to patient intolerance, cumulative toxicities, and disease refractoriness. Targeted therapies can produce deep responses and improve progression-free and overall survival with more tolerable adverse event profiles. METHODS: We summarize the current literature and key clinical trials regarding targeted therapies in follicular lymphoma both in the front-line and in the relapsed-refractory setting...
