The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of low-level light therapy using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the speed of tooth movements that were required for the leveling and aligning of the lower anterior segment during non-extraction orthodontic treatment. The sample was comprised of patients (n = 40) with lower anterior crowding who were treated with self-ligating orthodontic brackets and a standardized wire sequence. A test group of patients (n = 20) who were treated with extraoral infrared light therapy for 20 min daily with at least 80 % compliance was compared to a control group (n = 20)...

The bottom-up synthesis of ligand-stabilized functional nanoparticles from molecular precursors is widely applied but is difficult to study mechanistically. Here we use (31)P NMR spectroscopy to follow the trajectory of phosphinate ligands during the synthesis of a range of ligated zinc oxo clusters, containing 4, 6 and 11 zinc atoms. Using an organometallic route, the clusters interconvert rapidly and self-assemble in solution based on thermodynamic equilibria rather than nucleation kinetics. These clusters are also identified in situ during the synthesis of phosphinate-capped zinc oxide nanoparticles...

Intervening protein sequences (inteins) from extremely halophilic haloarchaea can be inactive under low salinity but could be activated by increasing salt contents to a specific concentration for each intein. The halo-obligatory inteins confer high solubility under both low and high salinity conditions. We showed the broad utility of salt-dependent protein splicing in cis and trans by demonstrating backbone cyclization, self-cleavage for purification, and scarless protein ligation for segmental isotopic labeling...

A system was developed to detect the self-replication of an RNA enzyme in real time. The enzyme is an RNA ligase that undergoes exponential amplification at a constant temperature and can be made to operate in a ligand-dependent manner. The real-time system is based on a fluorimetric readout that directly couples the ligation event to an increase in florescence signal that can be monitored using standard instrumentation. The real-time system can also operate entirely with l-RNA, which is not susceptible to degradation by ribonucleases that are present in biological samples...

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer survival is poor, particularly for platinum-resistant cases. The previous literature on pre-diagnostic reproductive factors and ovarian cancer survival has been mixed. Therefore, we evaluated pre-diagnostic reproductive and hormonal factors with overall survival and, additionally, platinum-chemotherapy resistance. METHODS: We followed 1649 invasive epithelial ovarian cancer cases who were enrolled between 1992 and 2008 for overall mortality within the New England Case-Control Study and abstracted chemotherapy data on a subset (n=449)...

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic partial hepatectomy is an increasingly applied technique in the treatment of liver tumors and in living donor transplantation. There is a need for establishing an animal model that would facilitate experimental research on the technique. The aim of the present study was to describe a safe and efficient laparoscopic technique of 70% partial hepatectomy in the rat. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar rats underwent either laparoscopic (group LAP-HEP) or open resection of the median and left lateral hepatic lobes (group HEP)...

INTRODUCTION: New design of brackets have been introduced in the field of orthodontics in the recent past, and one of such advancement is the self-ligating brackets. These brackets are said to have less friction, with a shorter period of treatment. Better patient acceptance and good treatment results are some of the other advantages offered by self-ligating brackets. Hence, we comparatively evaluated root resorption of anterior teeth by self-ligating and conventional preadjusted brackets in cases of severe anterior crowding in class I patients...

BACKGROUND: The design of a highly effective anti-cancer immune-engager would include targeting of highly drug refractory cancer stem cells (CSC). The design would promote effective antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and simultaneously promote costimulation to expand and self-sustain the effector NK cell population. Based on our bispecific NK cell engager platform we constructed a tetraspecific killer engager (TetraKE) comprising single-chain variable fragments (scFvs) binding FcγRIII (CD16) on NK cells, EpCAM on carcinoma cells and CD133 on cancer stem cells in order to promote ADCC...

The effective defense against parasite infections requires the ability to mount an appropriate and controlled specific immune response able to eradicate the invading pathogen while limiting the collateral damage to self-tissues. Dendritic cells are key elements for the development of immunity against parasites; they control the responses required to eliminate these pathogens while maintaining host homeostasis. Ligation of dendritic cell pattern recognition receptors by pathogen-associated molecular pattern present in the parasites initiates signaling pathways that lead to the production of surface and secreted proteins that are required, together with the antigen, to induce an appropriate and timely regulated immune response...

INTRODUCTION: Our aims were to analyze adhesion of periodontopathogens to self-ligating brackets (Clarity-SL [CSL], Clippy-C [CC] and Damon Q [DQ]) and to identify the relationships between bacterial adhesion and oral hygiene indexes. METHODS: Central incisor brackets from the maxilla and mandible were collected from 60 patients at debonding after the plaque and gingival indexes were measured. Adhesions of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), and Tannerella forsythia (Tf) were quantitatively determined using real-time polymerase chain reactions...

Lack of confidence and self-efficacy are the main causes of negative emotions experienced by veterinary students when performing surgery. A surgical training model (STM) was developed to test the hypothesis that practical training on an STM before performing live surgery would enhance the students' confidence. In addition, low-cost and easily accessible materials were used for the construction. In the STM, neodymium magnets that were detached if too much traction was applied were used to ensure careful tissue handling during ligation of the ovarian pedicles and cervix...

Protein interaction networks are the basis for human metabolic and signaling systems. Interaction studies often use bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) to reveal the formation and cellular localization of protein complexes. However, large-scale studies were either far from native conditions in human cells or limited by laborious restriction/ligation cloning techniques. Here, we describe a new tool for protein interaction screening based on Gateway-compatible BiFC vectors. We made a set of four new vectors that permit fusion of candidate proteins to the N or C fragment of Venus in all fusion positions...

Tyrosinases are ubiquitous binuclear copper enzymes that oxygenate to Cu(II) 2 O2 cores bonded by three histidine Nτ-imidazoles per Cu center. Synthetic monodentate imidazole-bonded Cu(II) 2 O2 species self-assemble in a near quantitative manner at -125 °C, but Nπ-ligation has been required. Herein, we disclose the syntheses and reactivity of three Nτ-imidazole bonded Cu(II) 2 O2 species at solution temperatures of -145 °C, which was achieved using a eutectic mixture of THF and 2-MeTHF. The addition of anionic phenolates affords a Cu(III) 2 O2 species, where the bonded phenolates hydroxylate to catecholates in high yields...
