OBJECTIVE: To determine whether monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), a proinflammatory chemokine important in ovulation, is abnormally elevated in obese women undergoing IVF and whether serum and follicular fluid (FF) levels of MCP-1 are associated with IVF outcome. DESIGN: Prospective pilot study. SETTING: Academic center. PATIENT(S): Women undergoing IVF. INTERVENTION(S): Serum and FF were collected from women undergoing IVF...

We investigated arsenite exposure on the reproductive axis of dams (during pregnancy and at cyclicity resumption) and their offspring. Pregnant rats were exposed to 5 (A5) or 50ppm (A50) of sodium arsenite in drinking water from gestational day 1 (GD1) until sacrifice at GD18 or two months postpartum. Offspring were exposed to the same treatment as their mothers from weaning to adulthood. A50-pregnant rats gained less weight, showed increased testosterone and estradiol but pregnancy was unaffected. After lactation, arsenic-exposed dams presented compromised cyclicity, decreased estradiol, increased follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), less preovulatory follicles and presence of ovarian cysts, suggesting impaired reproduction...

Background: Low testosterone levels are a common finding among men with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and are inversely related to insulin resistance. Whether this relationship holds true in patients with hypertension, but normal glucose tolerance or prediabetes, is unclear. Methods: We recruited 87 male outpatients with essential arterial hypertension, aged 35-70 years. Anthropometric data were collected, an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) performed, and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) score calculated...

CONTEXT: Undescended testes at birth may be caused by testosterone deficiency during fetal development. It is unclear whether the process of failed descent contributes to permanent endocrine impairment. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of age at treatment of undescended testes on endocrine and spermatogenic testicular function in middle-aged men. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Reproductive hormone and semen data of 357 men with previously undescended testes were evaluated with respect to age at correction of testicular position and compared to those of 709 controls with eutopic testes at birth and normozoospermia...

Background TSH is used as the first line test of thyroid function. Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics recommend that Siemens Centaur reagents must be protected from light in the assay information and on reagent packaging. We have compared the effect of light exposure on results using Siemens TSH-3Ultra and FSH reagents. The TSH reagent includes fluoroscein thiocyanate (FITC) whereas the FSH reagent does not. Methods Three levels of quality controls were analysed using SiemensTSH-3Ultra and FSH reagent packs that had been kept protected from light or exposed to light at 6 hour intervals for 48 hours and then at 96 hours...

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) widely spread industrial chemical that made drastic alteration in male reproductive system. The present study elucidates the protective role of testosterone on reproductive toxicity in prenatal DBP exposed adult male rats. Pregnant rats were injected with corn oil or 100 and 500mg/kg body weight of DBP on gestation day (GD) 1, 7 and 14. F1 male rats were weaned, injected with either testosterone or vehicle. On postnatal day (PND) 100 F1 adult male rats were cohabited with untreated female rats...

This study determined the influence of a short-term glucogenic nutritional treatment on circulating concentrations of glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and urea, and on their correspondent levels in follicular fluid (FF) collected 12 h after the end of the treatment. After estrous synchronization with intravaginal progestagen-impregnated sponges, 20 Sarda ewes were randomly allocated into two experimental groups (GLU and WAT) and, from day 7 to day 10 (day 0 = day of sponge removal), the GLU group was gavaged with a glycogenic mixture, whereas the WAT group was gavaged with water (control group)...

OBJECTIVE: We compared sex steroid levels of postmenopausal patients with symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) with postmenopausal matched patients without any sign of POP. Furthermore, we evaluated a possible relationship between sex steroid levels and various urogynecologic parameters in cases with POP. Main outcome of interest were differences in circulating estradiol levels between the two groups. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a case-control study and 46 postmenopausal women with symptomatic POP≥stage 2 were matched 1:1 with 46 urogynecologic healthy women...

BACKGROUND: Menopause is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and the causal factors have been proposed to be the loss of estrogen and the subsequent alterations of the hormonal milieu. However, which factors contribute to the deterioration of cardiometabolic health in postmenopausal women is debated as the menopausal transition is also associated with increased age and fat mass. Furthermore, indications of reduced cardiometabolic adaptations to exercise in postmenopausal women add to the adverse health profile...

OBJECTIVE: Furan (C4H4O) is a heat-induced food contaminant that is utilized as an industrial chemical agent. Lycopene is a natural substance that is produced by plants and tomatoes. We aimed to evaluate the toxicity of furan on testes and the protective effect of lycopene in diabetic rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Male Wistar albino rats were divided into five groups: Group 1 (control group) received 1 mL/kg corn oil. Group 2 (diabetic control group) received 55 mg/kg STZ and 1 mL/kg corn oil...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Men treated at a single andrology clinic between July and October 2014 completed questionnaires assessing sleep quality, hypogonadal symptoms (Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male [ADAM/qADAM]), and sexual function (International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF]). Serum hormone levels were assessed at the time of survey completion...

We assessed the effects of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) on oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM), apoptosis, and follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), and gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) expression and mRNA levels. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were recovered from sheep ovaries and pooled in groups, before being cultured in IVM media containing varying eCG concentrations. Maturation and apoptosis rates were then calculated. Expression of FSHR, LHR, and GnRHR mRNA in oocytes was measured using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction...

Persistent amenorrhea is a frequent condition affecting anorexic patients after stable weight recovery. It has been proposed that it could be due to alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis linked with persistent hormonal impairments, such as relative hypercortisolemia and hypoleptinemia, and psychological symptoms related to anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of our study was to evaluate the metabolic and hormonal pattern involved in the persistence of amenorrhea after recovery from AN. Eight weight-recovered anorexic patients with amenorrhea were investigated and matched with 10 healthy eumenorrhoic women, comparable for age and BMI...
