BACKGROUND Lymph node metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma is rare, and lymph nodes located on hepatic hilar and hepatoduodenal ligaments are primary targets. Metastasis to a mesocolic lymph node has not been reported previously. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis underwent primary resection of hepatocellular carcinoma. Two and a half years later, tumor marker levels increased remarkably and imaging revealed a mesocolic mass. The tumor measured 27 mm in diameter and showed characteristic findings consistent with hepatocellular carcinoma in dynamic computed tomographic images, although the tumor was negative in fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographic images...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We determined the rates of initial lymph node metastasis following curative resection of mass-forming type-intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in patients with and without hepatitis virus infection. METHODS: We enrolled 87 patients between January 2000 and December 2013 with ICC without preoperative lymph node metastasis and without lymph node dissection. Patients included 32 who were seropositive for hepatitis B or C virus (virus group) and 55 who had no evidence of hepatitis virus infection (nonvirus group)...

Serology is important for the diagnosis and follow-up of human alveolar echinococcosis (AE). However, patient conditions are highly variable among those with AE, and antibody responses in serological follow-up have not been well-defined. We recently described a new AE rat model established by implantation of small AE tissue into a single arbitrary location in the liver; no metastasis and dissemination were observed. In the present study, we examined the serological characteristics in our rat model before and after surgical treatment...

Accumulating evidence indicates that the interaction between epithelial and mesenchymal cells plays a pivotal role in cancer development and metastasis formation. Here we propose an integro-differential model for the co-culture dynamics of epithelial-like and mesenchymal-like cells. Our model takes into account the effects of chemotaxis, adhesive interactions between epithelial-like cells, proliferation and competition for nutrients. We present a sample of numerical results which display the emergence of spots, stripes and honeycomb patterns, depending on parameters and initial data...

Tumor metastasis are accompanied by the EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition)-MET (mesenchymal-epithelial transition) two-step process. In this study, we investigated the importance of cancer associated fibroblasts (CAF) in the process. First, the primary cultures of isolated pancreatic CAF, fibroblasts of normal pancreatic tissues (NF), and normal hepatic stellate cells (HSF) were identified and verified via the expression of α-SMA and vimentin. Using an indirect three-dimensional co-culture model, the morphological changes were observed by light microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy...

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Although hepatic excision is the first-line treatment for colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM), few patients are candidates. Locoregional therapy (LRT) encompasses minimally invasive techniques practiced by interventional radiology. These include ablative treatments (radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and cryosurgical ablation) and transcatheter intra-arterial therapy (hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy, transarterial "bland" embolization, transarterial chemoembolization, and radioembolization with yttrium 90)...

BACKGROUND: Meigs' syndrome is defined as the co-existence of benign ovarian fibroma or fibroma-like tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion. In contrast, pseudo-Meigs' syndrome is defined as the co-existence of other ovarian or pelvic tumors, ascites, and pleural effusion. In Meigs' and pseudo-Meigs' syndromes, ascites and pleural effusion resolve promptly after the complete resection of the ovarian or pelvic tumor(s). Secondary ovarian tumors from colorectal gastrointestinal metastases rarely cause pseudo-Meigs' syndrome; only 11 cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to colorectal cancers have been reported in the literature...

Pancreatic cancer is still one of the most aggressive oncological diseases with a 5-year mortality rate below 10%. Surgery remains the only curative treatment; however, most patients present with late-stage disease deemed unresectable, either due to extensive local vascular involvement or the presence of distant metastasis. In the detection of hepatic metastases, the current standard is palliative chemotherapy with fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) or nab-paclitaxel with gemcitabine...

Lung cancer is one of the major causes of death in the world. Small cell carcinoma is the most aggressive type and can spread rapidly. The association of a small cell carcinoma with hepatic hilar metastasis and biliary obstruction is rare. Endoscopic ultrasound allows the aspiration of a cytology sample from adenopathies for diagnostic purpose. We present the case of a patient with lung cancer, with lymph node metastasis to the hepatic hilum and extrinsic biliary tree compression. Endoscopic ultrasound allowed the definitive diagnosis of hepatic hilar metastasis of a lung small cell carcinoma...
