Combined primary hepatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (PHNEC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a very rare malignant hepatic tumor. Its prognosis and histological features are uncertain. Here we report the case of such a tumor in a 70-year-old male Japanese patient with adverse prognosis. The patient underwent a right hepatic lobectomy for a tumor mass that measured 11×10cm in diameter located in the right lobe of the liver, treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization (PTPE) therapy five weeks before the operation...

PURPOSE: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is an option for patients with liver-predominant metastatic breast cancer (LMBC), when no further systemic treatment is available. But systematic reports are limited. Here we conducted a retrospective analysis of LMBC patients treated at an expert center. METHODS: Individual patient data were retrieved from the clinical data base of the West German Cancer Center. Primary endpoints included hepatic response (RECIST), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and toxicity...

BACKGROUND: Metastatic uveal melanoma is a highly fatal disease; most patients die from their hepatic metastasis within 1 year. A major drawback in the development of new treatments for metastatic uveal melanoma is the difficulty in obtaining appropriate cell lines and the lack of appropriate animal models. Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumor models, bearing ectopically implanted tumors at a subcutaneous site, have been developed. However, these ectopically implanted PDX models have obstacles to translational research, including a low engraftment rate, slow tumor growth, and biological changes after multiple passages due to the different microenvironment...

Colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) is one of the most difficult and key points in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Approximately 50% to 60% of patients diagnosed as colorectal cancer develops metastasis, and 80% to 90% of CRLM is unresectable. Surgical resection is the first-line treatment for CRLM, while it is only suitable for about 15% patients. Systemic chemotherapy can prolong the survival of CRLM patients, however, a part of CRLM patients are resistant to chemotherapy. With the development of technology and the update of clinical evidence, individual therapy with target drugs and multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) have became a tendency, and minimally invasive interventional therapy has gained more acceptance in the MDT mode of the treatment for CRLM...

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common histological type of primary liver cancer, which represents the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. MiR-126 was reported to be downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, compared with its levels in noncancerous tissues. However, baseline miR-126 expression levels in hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma patients who did not undergo pre-operational treatment remains unknown since hepatitis B virus infection and pre-operational transcatheter arterial chemoembolization were shown to upregulate miR-126 expression...

MicroRNAs are short RNAs that play a crucial role in all biological processes through post-transcriptional regulation for protein-coding genes and inducing mRNA degradation. Hepatitis B virus infection has been considered as a major risk factor in hepatocellular carcinoma, further research indicates that hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) is one of the critical links of hepatocarcinogenesis. HBx takes part in hepatocarcinogenesis via regulating transcription, signal transduction, apoptosis, protein degradation and DNA repair...

Desmoplastic spindle cell tumors of liver are rare tumors of low malignant potential characterized by well-demarcated nests of spindle and epithelioid cells in a dense desmoplastic stroma. While surgery remains the definitive treatment, there have been reports of tumor recurrence locally and metastasis which respond poorly to chemotherapy. Hepatic transplant has been attempted in cases of recurrence or large size of primary tumor. Long-term follow-up and imaging surveillance are required as these tumors have shown a tendency for recurrence many years after initial therapy...

NADPH oxidases of human cells are not only functional in defense against invading microorganisms and for oxidative reactions needed for specialized biosynthetic pathways but also during the past few years have been established as signaling modules. It has been shown that human Nox4 is expressed in most somatic cell types and produces hydrogen peroxide, which signals to remodel the actin cytoskeleton. This correlates well with the function of Yno1, the only NADPH oxidase of yeast cells. Using two established tumor cell lines, which are derived from hepatic and neuroblastoma tumors, respectively, we are showing here that in both tumor models Nox4 is expressed in the ER (like the yeast NADPH oxidase), where according to published literature, it produces hydrogen peroxide...

γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) is upregulated in a variety of human cancers including primary and secondary hepatic tumors. This motivated us to use γ-glutamyl hydroxymethyl rhodamine green (gGlu-HMRG), a novel fluorophore emitting light at around 520 nm following enzymatic reaction with GGT, as a tool for the intraoperative identification of hepatic tumors. gGlu-HMRG was topically applied to 103 freshly resected hepatic specimens. Fluorescence imaging using gGlu-HMRG identified hepatic tumors with the sensitivity/specificity of 48%/96% for hepatocellular carcinoma, 100%/100% for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and 87%/100% for colorectal liver metastasis...

Neuroendocrine tumors comprise approximately 1-2% of all gastrointestinal tumors, and while the liver is the most common site for metastasis of these tumors, primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors are very rare entities. Since first being reported in 1958, there have been less than 150 cases reported in the literature. Because of the infrequent occurrence of these tumors, the pool of data available for analysis regarding these tumors is small. As such, the medical community must rely on the publication of case report data to further enlarge this data pool, with the hopes of eventually having enough data to draw meaningful, statistically significant conclusions with regard to diagnosis and management of these rare tumors...

Pancreatic cancer shows a remarkable predilection for hepatic metastasis. Complement component 1, q subcomponent binding protein (C1QBP) can mediate growth factor-induced cancer cell chemotaxis and distant metastasis by activation of receptor tyrosine kinases. Coincidentally, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) derived from the liver and cancer cells itself has been recognized as a critical inducer of hepatic metastasis. However, the mechanism underlying IGF-1-dependent hepatic metastasis of pancreatic cancer, in which C1QBP may be involved, remains unknown...

Peri-operative chemotherapy has been proposed to improve the survival of patients with colorectal cancer hepatic metastases (CRCHM). However, the role of the adjuvant chemotherapy post-metastasectomy for CRCHM patients who have undergone pre-operative chemotherapy is still undetermined. We retrospectively analyzed the role of adjuvant chemotherapy post-metastasectomy on relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in 163 CRCHM patients who received pre-operative chemotherapy using a Kaplan-Meier curve and univariate/multiple Cox model...

WEE1 is a serine/threonine protein kinase that inactivates cell division cycle 2 and is therefore a critical cell cycle regulator. Increased WEE1 expression has been observed in numerous types of human malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma and melanoma. WEE1 inhibition also results in evident anti-tumor effects in several human tumor cells including colon cancer cells, suggesting WEE1 as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cancer. However, the expression pattern of WEE1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear...

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma of the head and neck is a rare cancer with high local aggressiveness. Radical surgery and adjuvant treatment offer the best chance for cure, nonetheless 5-years recurrence rate remains high. Despite international guidelines are available for soft tissue sarcomas, no recommendations are specifically endorsed for leiomyosarcoma of the head and neck, due to the rarity of its presentation and consequently scarcity of data on long-term outcome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year old woman, operated 10 years before for leiomyosarcoma of the nasal pit and with negative 5-years follow-up, was admitted to our ward for impairment of the hepatic function...
