Immune thrombocitopenia in children is a very variable disease. International recommendations give therapeutic possibilities without strong protocols. In 2011, a therapeutic algorithm was published based on Hungarian practice. Recently, new innovative drugs have been available even in Hungary, so there is a need for modification of the therapeutic protocols. In this summary we give an overview about the current up-to-date management. In infancy and in childhood, high-dose immunglobulin treatment is recommended henceforward...

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an association between thrombocytopenia and platelet behavior in predicting mortality in septic patients. METHODS: Patients with criteria for sepsis at admission or at any time during hospitalization were selected; patients hospitalized for less than 24 hours were excluded. Thrombocytopenia was defined as a platelet count lower than 150.000/mm³, and recovery was defined as returning to levels above 150.000/mm³ after showing thrombocytopenia...

BACKGROUND: The role of adjuvant therapy in pancreatic cancer remains controversial. Gemcitabine given systemically seems to be effective; intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) has a deep rationale. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The goal was to evaluate the impact of postoperative IAC followed or not by systemic gemcitabine in patients after curative resection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. 5-fluoruracil 750 mg sq m(-1), leucovorin 75 mg sq m(-1), epirubicin 45 mg sq m(-1), carboplatin 225 mg sq m(-1) were administered every 3 weeks into celiac axis for three cycles (FLEC regimen), then gemcitabine at the dosage of 1 g sq m(-1) on days 1, 8 and 15 every 4 weeks for 3 months (FLECG regimen)...

Two patients who lived in Buenos Aires suburbs died from leptospirosis in July 2000 and March 2001. They developed a nonspecific febrile illness followed by hemorrhagic pneumonia and respiratory distress in absence of typical manifestations such as jaundice, nephropathy, thrombocitopenia or hemorrhages in other organs. In the house and surroundings of one patient rodents were captured and three strains of leptospira, serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae were isolated. Laboratory guinea pigs were inoculated and they were sacrificed as soon as respiratory symptoms appeared...

This is a retrospective study based on a population of 80 patients with connective tissue diseases from the University Hospital of Puerto Rico. Among the population, 62 (77.5%) of the patients had Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), whom we were most interested to monitor. The investigation revealed an incidence of 13.8% of anthiophospholipid syndrone within the general population. Among the patients with SLE it was 12.9%, and only 5.5% among the population with other diagnoses. The antibody found with the highest frequency within the systemic lupus erythematosus population was the anticardiolipin IgG (30...

Clinical manifestation and immunoserological features of secondary antiphospholipid syndrome (SAPS) were analyzed in this paper in 107 patients with systemic connective tissue diseases. In the group of patients with confirmed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) were positive in 43/93 (46.23%), while in 50/93 (53.76%) they were negative. Among aPL positive patients, 33/43 (76.74%) had clinical manifestations of SAPS, while 10 patients (23.26%) were without any clinical manifestations...

The authors describe a case of hepatic hemangioma in a newborn, treated by successful surgical resection. Neonatal hepatic hemangioma is able to produce congestive heart failure with high output, thrombocitopenia, spontaneous rupture with peritoneal hemorrhage and sudden death. The major symptoms are a palpable anterior abdominal mass, tachicardia, and congestive heart failure unrespansive to medical treatments; sometimes there are cutaneus hemangiomas. When diagnosis is made, surgical resection is necessary in the solitar hemangioma; for diffuse or multinodular hemangiomatosis radiotherapy, corticosteroids and hepaticartery ligation have been employed with some good results...

During the 1st stage of the clinical trials of karminomycin 92 patients with leukemia, solid tumors and lymphoma were treated with karminomycin. Two schemes for the antibiotic use were developed. The 1st scheme was a prolonged one with single doses of 10-15 mg (7.5 mg/m2) administered intravenously twice a week for 3 weeks, the course dose being 60-75 mg (34-45 mg/m2) with 4-week intervals between the courses. The course dose for the patients previously subjected to intensive chemotherapy did not exceed 50 mg (30 mg/m2)...
