BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) suffer from greater physical morbidity and mortality than the general population. The aim of the present study is to explore the prevalence and clinical correlates of General Medical Conditions (GMC) in a large consecutive sample of patients with BD. METHOD: The study sample comprised of 347 patients who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for BD I (n=207, 59.7%), BD II or Cyclothymic Disorder (n=140, 40.3). Diagnostic information was collected by means of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders- Clinical Version (SCID-I), and information about personal and family history were collected by the Semi-Structured Interview for Mood Disorder-Revised (SIMD-R)...

In spite of the amount of literature demonstrating the relationship between upper and lower airways, both from the anatomical, and pathophysiological point of view, little is known about the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of the Rhino-Bronchial Syndrome (RBS). After the publication, in 2003, of a Consensus Report defining the Rhino-Bronchial Syndrome, an interdisciplinary group of experts made up from the Italian ENT Society (SIO) and the Interdisciplinary Scientific Association for the Study of Respiratory Diseases (AIMAR) met again in 2005 in order to study a protocol which would have, as the main tasks, the analysis of RBS signs and symptoms and standardization of the diagnostic approach...

OBJECTIVE: This study aims at defining the incidence of rhino-bronchial syndrome (RBS) in children in order both to verify the influence of nasal obstructions on the disease and to determine therapeutic strategies which may cure the syndrome effectively at its early stage. METHODS: The investigation includes 128 non-allergic children with obstructive disorders (adenoid hypertrophy, septal deviation, etc.) and rhino-sinus inflammations associated with bronchopulmonary diseases (asthma, chronic cough, bronchopulmonary infections)...

A close anatomical and functional relationship between superior and inferior airways is well documented. A typical example is offered by the close relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma whose close connection is documented by epidemiological and pathological data. The mechanisms which can explain this phenomenon are not fully known but naso-bronchial reflexes, mouth-breathing due to nasal obstruction and aspiration of nasal secretions seem all to be important. Moreover it has been recently proved that the treatment of rhinitis can improve the concomitant asthma thus confirming their relationship...

The studies in relation to rhino-bronchial syndrome are very few. That's true because of the diagnosis and treatment of the specimens is not made in a randomized way. And because of the many different etiology. In this paper two hundred and thirty files were studied within the diagnosis of RBS among patients consulting in the Pediatric Allergy Service in 1989. The results show that this process is multifactorial: allergic 72%, infections 23% and functional (gastric reflux) in 4%. There was improvement with specific treatment with immunotherapy and general measurements in 82%...
