Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been utilized to track community infections of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) by detecting RNA of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), within samples collected from wastewater. The correlations between community infections and wastewater measurements of the RNA can potentially change as SARS-CoV-2 evolves into new variations by mutating. This study analyzed SARS-CoV-2 RNA, and indicators of human waste in wastewater from two sewersheds of different scales (University of Miami (UM) campus and Miami-Dade County Central District wastewater treatment plant (CDWWTP)) during five internally defined COVID-19 variant dominant periods (Initial, Pre-Delta, Delta, Omicron and Post-Omicron wave)...

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the transportation needs of immigrants is crucial for the design and promotion of safe, equitable, and sustainable living environments. This study examines the transportation patterns from a sample of Recent Latinx Immigrants (RLIs) upon arrival to Miami/Dade Co (MDC), Florida. METHODS: Collected between 2018 and 2021, data came from a longitudinal study examining drinking and driving trajectories among 540 RLIs to MDC. Retrospective pre-immigration data (T0) were obtained simultaneously with the first-year post-immigration data (T1)...

Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) is an autonomic nervous system (ANS) response that may indicate dysfunction in the human body. Consistent evidence shows cancer patients elicit lower HRV; however, only select cancer locations were previously evaluated. Thus, the aim of the current study was to explore HRV patterns in patients diagnosed with and in varying stages of the most prevalent cancers. At a single tertiary academic medical center, 798 patients were recruited. HRV was measured via an armband monitor (Warfighter MonitorTM , Tiger Tech Solutions, Inc...

The American healthcare system is ill-fitted to meet the needs of the growing population with Alzheimer's and Related Dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers, which disproportionately affects Latinos. This paper describes the caregiving process for Latino patients with ADRD from the perspective of caregivers and service providers to reveal service areas in need of improvement. Ten providers and 24 Latino caregivers were interviewed through the Miami-Dade County Aging Network. Interviews were analyzed using a grounded theory approach...

We have previously identified that a structural membrane protein Caveolin-1 (Cav1) is involved in the regulation of aberrant keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of Cav1, Caveolin-2 (Cav2), and Cavin-1 in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris and between psoriasis subtypes. We utilized human biopsies from validated cases of psoriasis vulgaris (n = 21) at the University of Miami Hospital and compared the expression of Cav1, Cav2, and Cavin-1 by immunohistochemistry staining with that in normal healthy age-/sex-/location-matched skin (n = 15) and chronic spongiotic dermatitis skin samples (as control inflammatory skin condition) and quantified using QuPath...

Peyronie's Disease (PD) is characterized by fibrotic plaques in the penile tunica albuginea, causing curvature and painful erections. Current treatments have limited established efficacy. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), known for modulating inflammation, offers a potential alternative. This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study at the University of Miami assesses PRP's safety and efficacy for PD. Forty-one PD patients were randomized into PRP-placebo (Group A) and placebo-PRP (Group B) sequences, receiving two injections of each treatment over three months, with a crossover to receive two injections of alternate treatment over the next three months...

Highly urban coastal communities in low lying areas and with high water tables are vulnerable to sea-level rise and to corresponding increases in coastal groundwater levels. Stormwater conveyance systems are under increased risk. Rising groundwater levels affect the hydraulics of the stormwater system thereby increasing contaminant transport, for example the fecal indicator bacteria enterococci, to coastal waters. This study offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the impacts of increased contaminant transport on marine coastal environments...

This study investigated the effect of heavy metals on the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata from 5 sites along the coast of Alexandria, with focus on its ecological health and potential risks to human consumption. Pollution results showed that Abu-Qir had the highest Cu and Cd values. Montaza and Eastern Harbor had the highest Fe and Pb values, respectively. Statistically, differences in metal concentrations among study sites were significant (p < 0.05). Non-carcinogenic risk (TTHQ) of tested metals and carcinogenic ones of Cd and Pb showed "high risk" on human health by consuming pearl oysters...

Suboptimal viral suppression is associated with worse outcomes and increased HIV transmission among women with HIV (WWH). Based on syndemic theory, we hypothesized that women exposed to recent intimate partner violence (IPV) and current drug use would be most likely to have suboptimal HIV viral suppression. We analyzed baseline data from a longitudinal clinical trial (WHAT-IF? Will Having Alcohol Treatment Improve My Functioning?) that enrolled WWH from Miami, FL, who reported heavy drinking. Community collaboration is a cornerstone of modern public health efforts. This work aimed to use community-engaged research to explore COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and infection in a minoritized community. This study was conducted in Miami, Florida, from March 2021 to February 2022 in community partner sites and the Miami Adult Studies on HIV (MASH) cohort. Sociodemographic characteristics, vaccination and testing beliefs, and COVID-19 challenges were self-reported. COVID-19 vaccinations were verified with medical records, testing history was self-reported, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 positivity was determined via real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR)...

BACKGROUND: Tele-harm reduction (THR) is a telehealth-enhanced, peer-led, harm reduction intervention delivered within a trusted syringe services program (SSP) venue. The primary goal of THR is to facilitate linkage to care and rapid, enduring virologic suppression among people who inject drugs (PWID) with HIV. An SSP in Miami, Florida, developed THR to circumvent pervasive stigma within the traditional healthcare system. METHODS: During intervention development, we conducted in-depth interviews with PWID with HIV (n = 25) to identify barriers and facilitators to care via THR...

Are parasitoids less likely to find their Lepidoptera hosts on non-native hostplants than native hostplants? We predicted that with longer periods of coevolution between herbivores and the plants they consume, the parasitoids that provide top-down control would be more attuned to finding their hosts on native plants. To test this hypothesis, we collected immature stages of sulfur butterflies (the cloudless sulfur ( Phoebis sennae ) and the orange-barred sulfur ( Phoebis agarithe ) over a three-year period (2008-2011) from native and ornamental hostplants in the genus Senna in three different parts of the urban landscape of Miami, Florida, USA...
