BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the effectiveness of specific concentrations of antibiofilm agents, such as N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), rifampicin, and ozone, for the treatment of pan-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (PRKp). OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effectiveness of antibiofilm agents, such as NAC, rifampicin, and ozone, on biofilm formation in PRKp at 2, 6, 24, and 72 h. DESIGN AND SETTING: This single-center experimental study was conducted on June 15, 2017, and July 15, 2018, at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Turkey...

INTRODUCTION: LatinX youth in the U.S. are disproportionately affected by HIV and STIs, commonly attributed to a lack of diagnostic testing and regular physician consultations to address sexual health. These disparities have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This meta-analysis seeks to assess the efficacy of behavioral interventions among LatinX youth in the U.S. that aim to increase engagement in sexual health services (i.e., STI/HIV testing, physician consultations). CONTENT: Following PRISMA guidelines, seven electronic databases were searched...

AIMS: While internet search engines have been the primary information source for patients' questions, artificial intelligence large language models like ChatGPT are trending towards becoming the new primary source. The purpose of this study was to determine if ChatGPT can answer patient questions about total hip (THA) and knee arthroplasty (TKA) with consistent accuracy, comprehensiveness, and easy readability. METHODS: We posed the 20 most Google-searched questions about THA and TKA, plus ten additional postoperative questions, to ChatGPT...

INTRODUCTION: Leaving against medical advice (AMA) has been associated with higher rates of readmission and worse postoperative outcomes in various surgical fields. Patients who have undergone spine surgery often require careful postoperative follow-up to ensure an uncomplicated recovery. In this study, we aim to investigate the demographic and hospital variables that may have contributed to patients leaving the hospital AMA following spine surgery. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients receiving spine surgery; we used the data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) database for the years 2011-2020...

This study aimed to assess the impact of adding forage cactus as an additive to the production of corn silage without the cob on the performance of feedlot sheep and subsequent silage losses. The experimental design was completely randomized, consisting of three treatments: corn silage without cob; 0% = 100% corn plant without the cob; 10% = 90% corn plant without cob + 10% forage cactus; 20% = 80% corn plant without cob + 20% forage cactus...

Penile torsion is the abnormal three-dimensional twisting of penile corporal bodies. It can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the degree of torsion. Severe penile torsion (>90°) is a very rare condition, with an estimated incidence of 0.4%-1% among all penile torsion cases. Our patient was a 37-year-old man complaining of a 2-year history of lower urinary tract symptoms. These symptoms appeared after the patient sustained an iatrogenic injury during Foley catheter insertion. Physical examination incidentally revealed an obvious counterclockwise penile rotation of 180°...

Aging-related cardiac dysfunction poses a major risk factor of mortality for elderly populations, however, efficient treatment for aging-related cardiac dysfunction is far from being known. Isthmin-1 (ISM1) is a novel adipokine that promotes glucose uptake and acts indispensable roles in restraining inflammatory and fibrosis. The present study aims to investigate the potential role and molecular mechanism of ISM1 in aging-related cardiac dysfunction. Aged and matched young mice were overexpressed or silenced with ISM1 to investigate the role of ISM1 in aging-related cardiac dysfunction...

Twenty-three recreationally trained individuals, 6 women and 17 men, performed on a 3D force platform 5 maximal countermovement jump trials against 3 external loads (30%, 50%, and 70% of the SM 1-repetition maximum) using the SM and FW jumping modalities on separate sessions...

CCR2 (C-C chemokine receptor type 2) is a monocyte chemokine associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Kidney stones (KS) are composed of calcium oxalate (CaOx), which trigger renal oxidative stress and inflammatory. This study aims to evaluate the effects of CCR2 on KS in vivo and in vitro. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with glyoxylate (GOX) daily to establish a KS model, and along with CCR2 antagonist (INCB3344) treatment on days 2, 4, and 6. The results showed that CCR2 antagonist reduced renal injury markers (blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine), alleviated renal tubular injury and CaOx crystal deposition...

Galectin-3 levels have been studied as a potential biomarker for predicting cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Recently, a close relationship between galectin-3 and vascular calcification (VC) has been reported. Here, we investigated the role of VC as a mediating factor in the association between galectin-3 and mortality. Serum galectin-3 and baseline aortic arch calcification (AoAC) score were measured in 477 incident HD patients. Mortality data were obtained at a median follow-up of 40 months...

Methods: The study survey was administered to 1,223 university students from Spain (658) and the United Kingdom (565) during the academic year 2020-2021. Results: Cronbach's alpha values were .80 (Spain) and .86 (United Kingdom). Background: Cigarette smoking remains the leading avoidable cause of premature death in the United States, accounting for approximately 500,000, or 1 in 5, deaths annually. We explored trends in cigarette smoking among US adolescents. Methods: We used data for adolescents in grades 9 through 12 from 1991 to 2021 from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We explored trends overall as well as by sex, race/ethnicity, and school grade. Hyperextension injuries of the ankylosed thoracolumbar spine, particularly those with preexisting kyphotic deformity, present significant therapeutic challenges. The authors viewed that such injuries without displacement or fractures of the posterior elements are reasonable candidates for standalone percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). In such cases, the posterior tension band is spared; thus, fractures are unstable not in the lateral direction, which would lead to the translation of the fracture, but in the vertical direction...

The chemical composition, insect antifeedant, in vtro/in vivo nematicidal activity, phytotoxicity, and in silico nematicidal activity of the essential oil (EO) of the African medicinal plant Drypetes gossweileri were studied. Chemical analysis using GC/MS indicated that benzyl isothiocyanate (96.23%) was the major compound, followed by benzyl cyanide (1.38%). The biocidal effects of this oil were tested against insect pests and root-knot nematodes. All the insect species tested were significantly affected by the oil according to their feeding adaptations ( Spodoptera littoralis and Myzus persicae were less affected than Rhopalosiphum padi ) with efficient doses (EC50 ) of 29...
