High fluid intake is an effective preventative strategy against recurrent kidney stones but is known to be challenging to achieve. Recently, a smart water bottle (Hidrate Spark™, Minneapolis, MN) was developed as a non-invasive fluid intake monitoring system. This device could help patients who form stones from low urine volume achieve sustainable improvements in hydration, but has yet to be validated in a clinical setting. Hidrate Spark™ uses capacitive touch sensing via an internal sensor. It calculates volume measurements by detecting changes in water level and sends data wirelessly to users' smartphones through an application...

The elderly population is increasing and it is well documented that may present some health problems related to nutritional intake. Both mental and physical impairments in the elderly may need specific adaptations to dietary assessment methods. But all self-report approaches include systematic and random errors, and under-reporting of dietary energy intake is common. Biomarkers of protein intake, as 24 hours urinary Nitrogen, may not be useful in elderly patients because of incontinence problems. Some micronutrients, like vitamin B12, have special importance in the elderly population...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hyperleukocytosis (> 100 x 10(9)/L) is an uncommon presentation of chronic leukemias and it can present clinical symptoms of hyperviscosity syndrome. Hearing loss and blindness rarely occurs in patients with leukemia; however, it can be strong association with hyper-viscosity syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of acute hearing loss as the initial manifestation of acute leukemia and hyper-viscosity syndrome and also mainly aspects of the intensive care treatment...

There are a number of reasons that lead to inadequate salivation or complete cessation of salivation. Among others, one of the main can be systemic diseases like Sjögren's syndrome, and the use of medication and radiation therapy. When affected by Xerostomia, oral mucosa requires constant moisturizing. Medicaments stimulating saliva secretion and moisturizers for oral mucosa alleviate symptoms in most of the cases. LABORATORIOS KIN S.A. is a Spanish company offering a mouth moisturizing products' line, among others, KIN HIDRAT toothpaste and KIN HIDRAT spray with a formulation close to natural saliva...

Conditions that pose ethical problems related to nutrition and hydration are very common nowdays, particularly within Hospitals among terminally ill patients and other patients who require nutrition and hydration. In this article we intend to analyze some circumstances, according to widely accepted ethical values, in order to outline a clear action model to help clinicians in making such difficult decisions. The problematic situations analyzed include: should hydration and nutrition be considered basic care or therapeutic measures?, and the ethical aspects of enteral versus parenteral nutrition...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The nutritional state assessment have important implications to consider both: prognosis and prevention of diseases related to older adults. This study was designed to compare the assessment of the nutritional state, in alder adults, via Mini Nutritional Assessment with those obtained via evaluation of caloric ingest and anthropometric, biochemical and immunological parameters at family medicine centers. POPULATION AND METHODS: The nutritional status was assessed in 153 older adults, 93 men and 64 women, whose received medical attention at a primary care unit, the age average was 69...

OBJECTIVES: Therapy with protease inhibitors is commonly used in patients infected by human inmunodeficency virus (HIV). 20% of the administered dose is excreted by the kidney, and when alkaline urine is present, indinavir may crystallize forming stones and patients may experience renal colic due to this fact. METHODS: Between January 1998 and June 2005, 26 patients receiving antiretroviral treatment with protease inhibitors received care at our hospital because of renal colic or flank pain...

We report the clinic and microbiological findings that were obtained in 10 adult patients admitted by our ENT Service with diagnosis of suppurative bacterial acute parotitis. S. aureus and Streptococcus sp were the most isolated organisms. All the patients were treated by hidratation, endovenous antibiotic therapy sometimes modified according to the antibiogram results, analgesics and antiinflammatories with success. In 3 times it was necessary to drain the purulent collection and in one of them there was a retroauricular abscess secondary to sialoadenitis...

It was observed "in vitro" that dipirone improves hemoglobin S solubility, and that corticosteroids by antiinflammatory action relieve pain in sickle cell anemia crises. In the period between 1983 and 1988, 116 patients with sickle cell anemia having painful crises were studied. All patients were hydrated with DW (5% normal Serum Sodium/NSS) 1:1, in a total volume of 2250 ml/square meters (sgm) day. Patients were distributed as follows: Group 1: 26 patients treated with an association of dipirone and hidrocortisone; Group 2: 21 patients treated with hidrocortisone only; Group 3: 22 patients treated with dipirone only; Group 4: 23 patients treated only with hidration; Group 5: 24 patients treated only with DW 50%...

An experimental study of 20 patients with appendicitis was carried out in order to know if after the appendectomy they tolerate the hidratation with rehidratant salts by mouth in place of endovenous hydratation. The oral hydratation was indicated in all the cases immediately after the operation and only was one failure (5%). In the 95% the oral hydratation was tolerated, 45% without gastric symptoms, 35% with mild gastric symptoms and in 15% with moderate gastric symptoms. The association of gentamycin-metronidazol administered by intramuscular and oral way respectively was used in 100% of the patients...

Since May of 1983 to December of 1988, 62 subcutaneous venous reservoires were implanted in 57 pediatric patients; 29 were boys and the remaining 28 were girls between the ages of 2 and 18 years. Fifty-one patients had malignant illnesses and seven other pathologies. The reservoir was used for the endovenous administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy and antibiotics, hidration, nutrition, the transfusion of blood product and the extraction of samples for laboratory tests. In our experience the most important complication was the infection of the system, on the average 0...

The author studied histologically, the healing process after dental extraction in rats which sockets were filled with fragments of microcrystalline collagen. Thirty six rats (Rattus Novergicus, albinus, Wistar), young, male, weighting from 90 to 110 g and separated into two groups, control and experimental, of eighteen animal each. All animals were anaesthetized with 10% cloral hidrate, 3 ml/Kg body weight and the right maxillary incisors were extracted. In control animal the sockets were sutured after clot filling, and the experimental sockets were sutured after filling with microcrystalline collagen...

Circulating antibodies to cow's milk protein were investigated in 35 normally nourished infants aged 2 to 11 months. Nine were healthy (control group), and the remaining 26 were convalescents from acute diarrhoea. At the time of assay they were normally hidrated and being fed diluted cow's milk. The results showed elevated hemagglutinating antibody titers in the group of children with diarrhoea, statistically different to the control (p less than 0.001). The existence of an enhanced absorption of non degraded milk protein during the disease is assumed...
