This article discusses the effect on compliance and incidence of vascular access device (VAD)-related bacteraemia following the introduction of a passive disinfection device (Curos®) for 6 months in four areas at one hospital trust. The hospital's infection prevention and control team replaced the 'active' disinfection using a disinfection wipe with 'scrub the hub'. Disinfection caps are increasingly being used to prevent catheter-associated bloodstream infections. These devices, designed for continuous passive disinfection of catheter hubs, are typically small and often brightly colored. The first passive sampling device for the determination of airborne peroxyacetic acid (PAA) is presented. 2-([3-{2-[4-Amino-2-(methylsulfanyl)phenyl]-1-diazenyl}phenyl]sulfonyl)-1-ethanol (ADS) is used to impregnate glass fiber filters, and the reagent is oxidized by PAA to the corresponding sulfoxide ADSO. After elution of the filters, ADS and ADSO are separated by reversed-phase HPLC and detected by UV/visible absorbance.
