Catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy (CCM) is an entity associated with increased levels of catecholamines causing subendocardial and papillary muscle cardiomyocyte degeneration and necrosis. In 2020, 49 autopsies from early rabbit deaths in a colony used for medical device biocompatibility studies were submitted for microscopic examination. Of the 49 rabbits, 26 had histologic changes consistent with CCM. No common stressor for CCM was determined in affected rabbits. Animals were generally male, were 12-16-wk-old, and were found dead or had bloating, lethargy, and/or diarrhea...

A 6-year-old spayed female American bulldog was brought to a veterinary clinic with a 3-day history of vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, icterus, hemorrhagic diarrhea, and oliguria. The dog's clinical signs, complete blood (cell) count, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and diagnostic imaging were indicative of acute kidney injury and acute hepatopathy consistent with leptospirosis. Treatment for leptospirosis was initiated but, due to the dog's lack of response and progression of clinical signs, euthanasia was ultimately elected after 3 d of hospitalization...

Incidents of leukemia in pregnancy are infrequent with only one case found from 75,000 to 100,000 pregnancies. The pathophysiological mechanism of leukemia during pregnancy is still unclear. Leukemia which occurs in pregnancy is usually acute and predominantly the myeloid type.A 35-year-old woman in her fourth pregnancy with a gestational age of 38-39 weeks, came to the emergency department (ED) with complaints of contractions since 4.5 hours before admission. The contraction was not accompanied by discharge, mucus, or blood, and fetal movements was still active...

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) commonly leads to heart failure (HF) and represents the most common indication for cardiac transplantation in the pediatric population. Clinical manifestations of DCM are mainly the symptoms of heart failure; it is diagnosed by EKG, chest x-ray and echocardiography. For the idiopathic and familial diseases cases of DCM, there are no definite guidelines for treatment in children as they are treated for prognostic improvement. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 2-year-old girl diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy associated with homozygous mutation in the Myosin Light Chain 3 gene admitted for edema in lower extremities, muscle weakness, lethargy and vomiting, and she was found to be in cardiogenic shock...

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), which most often occurs after the use of antipsychotics, is a rare but life-threatening condition. In this article, a 56-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder (BPD) who developed NMS after a COVID-19 infection will be presented. The patient had been brought to the emergency room with high fever, fatigue, and slowness of movements that had been going on for two days. The examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnea, lethargy and rigidity. Upon further investigation the COVID-19 test came out positive and the serum levels of creatine kinase were considerably high...

Introduction: We report a case of accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR) identified by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) monitoring of an infant presenting with lethargy and respiratory distress. Accelerated idioventricular rhythms are rare ventricular rhythms originating from the His-Purkinje system or ventricular myocytes, consisting of >3 monomorphic beats with gradual onset and termination. 1 An AIVR is usually well-tolerated and does not require treatment, though sustained arrythmia may induce syncope, and the rhythm has been seen in newborn infants with congenital heart diseases...

An 11-month-old girl with severe acidosis, lethargy and vomiting, was diagnosed with holocarboxylase synthetase deficiency. She received biotin and was stable until age 8 years when vomiting, severe acidosis, hypoglycemia, and hyperammonemia developed. Management with intravenous glucose aiming to stimulate anabolism led to hyperglycemic ketoacidosis. Insulin therapy rapidly corrected biochemical parameters, and clinical status improved. We propose that secondary Krebs cycle disturbances affecting pancreatic beta cells impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, resulting in insulinopenia...

A 10-year-old Cocker spaniel presented with lethargy. Triple-phase computed tomography was obtained with a contrast test bolus at the level of porta hepatis, which revealed a right lower abdominal mass. The mass was not connected to other abdominal organs; however, a linear structure was observed connecting the splenic hilum to the mass, which was suspected to be the feeding vessel. The arterial phase image was obtained again with a contrast bolus at the level of the celiac artery. A prominent contrast-enhanced feeding artery originating from the splenic artery to the mass was observed...

Brimonidine, a selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, has been shown to cause neurological side effects such as unresponsiveness, lethargy, hypoventilation, and stupor, mimicking opioid toxicity. We report one case of transient encephalopathy in a toddler, in whom accidental brimonidine toxicity was suspected and then confirmed by a toxicology study. The healthy 8-month-old girl was taken to the pediatric ER since she was drowsy and hypotonic with miosis. Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo is a long slender bacterium of size 0.1-0.3 μm × 5-50 μm. It is one of the major causes of bovine leptospirosis and is of economical importance because of the reproductive failure, still birth, abortion, and reduced productivity in cattle. It is also a zoonotic disease-causing infection in humans characterized by headaches, fever, chills, sweats and myalgia, lethargy, aching joints, pulmonary haemorrhages, and death in severe cases. Control of the disease involves antibiotic therapy, management and vaccination, of which immunization is the cheapest and effective means of disease prevention...

For over a decade, bovine anaemia caused by Theileria orientalis Ikeda has been a significant disease in the Australian cattle industry. In this study, we conducted a spatial and temporal analysis of theileriosis in Australia using historic data from submissions to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) from 2006 to 2022, where herd history, clinical signs, and PCR results were available. Since the first detections of bovine theileriosis in the Sydney area in 2006, the disease spread north- and southward and is now endemic to the southeast coast of Australia, closely mirroring the distribution of the principal vector Haemaphysalis longicornis...
