INTRODUCTION: Surgical approaches to flank hernias have been poorly standardised. The most demanding issues in intermuscular net insertion are the limited area in the dorsal direction and the difficulties in fixing the net to the costal arch or the iliac crest. This is why many different surgical procedures have been published. PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: From August 2015 to October 2016, nine patients with a primary incisional lateral hernia received open retromuscular preperitoneal mesh repair...

INTRODUCTION: In patients with a hypercoagulable state, such as patients with pulmonary embolism and/or Budd-Chiari syndrome, the complications from multiple gene mutations are more numerous than those from a single mutation. The authors present a woman with no major prior medical history who presented with pulmonary embolism and Budd-Chiari syndrome; this enigmatic co-occurrence has never been solely reported without underlying aetiology in a patient without prior medical conditions...

Hydronephrosis in children is most often due to an intrinsic ureteropelvic junction obstruction or by compression on ureter by accessory renal artery coming from the aorta to the lower pole of the kidney. AIM: The aim of study was to present a case with a late onset of hydronephrosis caused by accessory renal artery. CASE REPORT: 5-year old boy with a mild pyelectasia during first 10 months of age was admitted to hospital because of abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a marked dilatation of the right pelvicalyceal system with renal pelvis measuring 23 mm in anterior-posterior (ap) diameter, enlargement of calyces to 10 mm and narrowed cortex to 5 mm...

Pyonephrosis in the course of hydronephrosis usually provides to total or near-total loss of renal function. In adults pyonephrosis usually results from urolithiasis. In children usually congenital urinary tract anomalies are present as contributing factors. CASE REPORT: 6-year old girl was admitted to the hospital because of 2-day history of high fever, abdominal pain, progressive deterioration of general condition and ultrasonographically (US) detected left hydronephrosis. US on admission showed grossly dilated left renal collecting system together with extensive echogenic debris and laboratory tests highly elevated inflammatory markers...

Over 1.4 million Americans have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and ulcerative colitis (UC) makes up approximately half of those diagnoses. As a disease, UC cycles between periods of remission and flare, which is characterized by intense abdominal pain, increased weight loss, intestinal inflammation, rectal bleeding, and dehydration. Interestingly, a widespread recommendation to IBD patients for avoidance of a flare period is "Don't Drink Alcohol" as recent work correlated alcohol consumption with increased GI symptoms in patients with IBD...

Ectopic pancreas is an uncommon finding in the stomach. Complications are rare but can lead to significant morbidity and even mortality. We report a 49-year-old man who presented with upper abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss and was found to have a gastric wall abscess that developed a few weeks after endoscopic biopsy of a gastric ulcer. After medical treatment failed to resolve his symptoms, he underwent distal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy. Postoperatively, the gastric wall abscess was determined to have derived from a focus of ectopic pancreatic tissue with evidence of ectopic chronic pancreatitis...

BACKGROUND: Published health-care costs related to constipation in children in the USA are estimated at $3.9 billion/year. We sought to assess the effect of a bowel management program (BMP) on health-care utilization and costs. METHODS: At two collaborating centers, BMP involves an outpatient week during which a treatment plan is implemented and objective assessment of stool burden is performed with daily radiography. We reviewed all patients with severe functional constipation who participated in the program from March 2011 to June 2015 in center 1 and from April 2014 to April 2016 in center 2...

"Tako-tsubo" cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome," is one of the rarest types of stress-induced cardiomyopathy. It frequently mimics acute coronary syndrome, characterized by transient left ventricular dysfunction, electrocardiographic changes, and release of myocardial enzymes. After treatment, the patients are cured in most cases without sequelae. Tako-tsubo syndrome is rarely considered as a reason for consultation in the forensic department.Herein, we report a case of a 68-year-old woman who was assaulted by her police officer neighbor...
