Due to three free hydroxyl groups, hydroxytyrosol (HT) presents strong bioactivity and has broad food and drug application prospects. However, there is no good separation and purification technology. In this study, separation and purification technology of HT from the ethyl acetate extraction of enzymatic hydrolysate from olive leaf (EEEH) was investigated with macroporous adsorption resin (MAR) and high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) and the separation factors were optimized. First, the adsorption properties of eight MARs (AB-8, S-8, D-101, X-5, XAD-1, XAD-5, NKA-Ⅱ, H-103) for HT enrichment were studied...

This systematic review aimed to qualitatively synthesize recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding the effect of topical application and oral intake of herbal products on the healing of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Also, we sought to pool the obtained findings in a meta-analysis using a random-effects model, if RCTs were relatively comparable and homogenous. A comprehensive search was performed on five electronic data sources from their inception through 23 January 2024. The RCTs, without restriction on the country of origin, were included if they compared the effect of administering standard treatments and/or placebo (i...

In order to achieve higher and earlier yield, modern olive orchards are increasingly intensified, with tree densities up to > 1500 trees hectare-1 . With increasing tree densities, individual-tree canopy volume must be proportionally reduced. Not all cultivars are adaptable to high and very high orchard densities, because of excessive vigor and/or insufficient bearing when the canopy is pruned to a small volume. However, what makes an olive cultivar suitable for intensive and super intensive orchards is not clear...

The small tree species Rhamnella franguloides, belonging to the genus Rhamnella in the tribe Rhamneae Hook. f. of Rhamnaceae (Hauenschild et al. 2016), is an important medicinal plant commonly used for making tea in China. In August 2023, leaf spot symptoms were observed on R. franguloides in Shangyao county, Yantai, Shandong, China, with a disease incidence of 45-65%. Initially appearing as small dark brown spots on the tip lesions, they later expanded and merged into irregular-shaped brown necrotic lesions with yellowish halos...

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is ranked as the most common malignant tumor in women globally with ∼ 2.3 million new cases (11.7 %) diagnosed in 2020. The multiple drawbacks associated with treatments, prompt researchers and patients to search for alternative therapy. Plants continue to offer encouraging leads, in particular those of the Annonaceae family, to which belongs Duguetia confinis, used by Cameroonian traditional healers to fight cancers. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of Duguetia confinis against human breast cancer cells...

This study explores the integration of zinc oxide coated with polyaniline (ZnO-PANI) nanoparticles into a poly(ether sulfone) (PES) matrix to concurrently enhance permeate flux and oleuropein (OLP) rejection during the filtration of olive leaf extract (OLE). The effect of ZnO-PANI content on porosity, pore size, surface hydrophilicity, and pure water flux (PWF) was studied. The results indicate that an increase in ZnO-PANI content (0-0.2%) leads to a 3-fold increase in mean pore size, permeability (1.29-7.18 L/m2 h bar), porosity (72...

Oleuropein is the main constituent of olive leaf extract, and it has shown antioxidant and gastroprotective properties against gastric ulcers. Chitosan nanoparticles are known for their mucoadhesive abilities, and consequently, they can increase the retention time of drugs in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, loading oleuropein onto chitosan nanoparticles is expected to enhance its biological efficiency. Oleuropein-loaded chitosan nanoparticles were prepared and characterized for particle size, surface charge, in vitro release, and anti-inflammatory activity...

Given today's increasingly intensive agriculture, one key problem area considers the valorization and reuse of wastes from food and agricultural production with minimal impact on the environment. Due to its physicochemical characteristics, biochar (BC) derived from grapevine pruning residue has shown considerable potential for use as an adsorbent. High-value phytochemicals found in abundance in the olive leaf (OL) can be employed in many different industrial sectors. The potential application of BC in the removal of specific polyphenolic components from OL extracts has been investigated in the present study...

Elaeocarpus decipiens is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree of commercial importance in southern China. During March 2018 to March 2021, leaf spot disease was observed in about 40% of E. decipiens on the campus of Jiangnan University in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China (31.48°N, 120.46°E). Leaf symptoms began as small, light brown lesions that enlarged, turned olive brown in color and then became necrotic. Ten symptomatic leaves were collected from five different trees on the Jiangnan University campus and surface sterilized with 75% ethanol for 30 seconds, followed by 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 minute, and rinsed three times with sterile distilled water before being cultured onto potato dextrose agar and incubated in the dark at 25°C for 5 days...

Nowadays, olive leaf polyphenols have been at the center of scientific interest due to their beneficial effects on human health. The most abundant polyphenol in olive leaves is oleuropein. The biological properties of oleuropein are mainly due to the hydroxytyrosol moiety, a drastic catechol group, whose biological activity has been mentioned many times in the literature. Hence, in recent years, many nutritional supplements, food products, and cosmetics enriched in hydroxytyrosol have been developed and marketed, with unexpectedly positive results...

Olive trees have a unique reproductive pattern marked by biennial fruiting. This study examined the repercussions of alternate fruit bearing on the water relations of olive trees and the associated ecophysiological mechanisms. The experiment spanned two consecutive years: the "ON" year, characterized by a high crop load, and the "OFF" year, marked by minimal fruit production. Key ecophysiological parameters, including sap flow, stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic rate, were monitored in both years. Pre-dawn water potential was measured using continuous stem psychrometers and the pressure chamber technique...

These discarded olive leaves contain valuable phenolic compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, neuroprotective, and antiproliferative properties. Due to their richness in polyphenols with health-promoting properties, olive leaves can be considered a potential functional food ingredient...

Olive leaves are an abundant by-product of olive oil production. Olive leaf extracts (OLEs) are rich in polyphenols, which can be used for health benefits. As polyphenols are the main antioxidant molecules in plants, plants typically increase their polyphenol content when exposed to drought stress. However, the phenolic profile of OLEs can vary in relation to the origin and variety of the plant material. In this work, olive leaf extracts from three different Italian olive cultivars (Giarraffa, Leccino, and Maurino) both exposed and not exposed to drought stress were studied in terms of antioxidant properties and profile, intestinal permeation, and protection against oxidative stress of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), since HUVECs are considered a model to study a wide range of diseases...
