BACKGROUND: The great diversity of the "Phytophaga" (weevils, longhorn beetles and leaf beetles) has been attributed to their co-radiation with the angiosperms based on matching age estimates for both groups, but phylogenetic information and molecular clock calibrations remain insufficient for this conclusion. METHODOLOGY: A phylogenetic analysis of the leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) was conducted based on three partial ribosomal gene markers (mitochondrial rrnL, nuclear small and large subunit rRNA) including over 3000 bp for 167 taxa representing most major chrysomelid lineages and outgroups...

Dynamics of the ISS RS radiation environment was studied using the data of daily (operative) monitoring and personal dose measurements during 11 increments in the period between August 1, 2000 and October 28, 2005 overlapping the maximum phase of the 23rd solar cycle. It was shown that personal absorbed doses varied within the range of measurements of dual wavelength radiometer R-16, a component of the ISS radiation monitoring system. Power of the absorbed doses fell in the range of 0.017 to 0.02 cGy/day and was solar-dependent...

REVIEW
Marcus E Randall, Geoffrey S Ibbott
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is considered a major advance in radiaton therapy (RT) capability. Therefore, it has been rapidly accepted and implemented in the treatment of multiple cancers in which RT plays a major role. Early reports of IMRT in gynecologic cancers have been largely favorable, particularly in terms of decreased acute morbidity. However, IMRT has not been prospectively shown to be superior to conventional 3-dimensional RT techniques when judged against criteria established in advance...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To describe the incidence of urinary incontinence among prostate cancer patients treated with external beam radiotherapy (RT) and to investigate associated risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One thousand and hundred ninety-two patients with >or=24 months follow-up were the subjects of this series. All patients received between 50 and 72 Gy in 20-37 fractions (median 66 Gy/33#). Post-RT urinary incontinence was scored by direct patient interviewing according to the modified RTOG/SOMA scale: Grade 1--occasional use of incontinence pads, Grade 2--intermittent use of incontinence pads, Grade 3--persistent use of incontinence pads, and Grade 4--permanent catheter...

PURPOSE: Prior studies emphasized genetic modulation of tumorigenicity, and experimental metastatic potential in cells transfected with oncogenes. Whether the intrinsic radiaton sensitivity of cells might correlate with parallel changes in metastatic potential is unknown. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Rat embryo cells (REC) were transfected with the following oncogenes, and where appropriate, with corresponding selection markers: pCMVneopEJ6.6ras, pEJ6.6ras/v-myc, pEla, and pEJ6...

A retrospective survey on home parenteral nutrition (HPN) in Europe was performed from January to December 1997. Data were compared to a similar study performed in 1993. A questionnaire of HPN practice was designed by the members of the ESPEN-HAN group. This involved adult patients (older than 16 years) newly registered in an HPN program between 1 January and 31 December 1997 and included: number of patients, underlying diseases and a 6-12 month outcome. Incidence and prevalence (at 1.1.1998) of adult HPN were calculated according to the estimated total population in 1997 for the countries in which more than 80% of HPN patients were reported...

The current standard treatments for childhood cancers are highly successful. The five-year survival rates for all children diagnosed with cancer in the late 1980s approaches 70%, and the outlook continues to improve. For some types of localized embryonal tumors, such as retinoblastoma and Wilms' tumor, the cure rates approach or exceed 90%. Our success in treating childhood cancers can be attributed to the development and use of an integrated, multimodality treatment approach which includes surgery, radiaton, and combination chemotherapy...

The mechanism by which Bcl-2 oncogene expression inhibits radiation-induced apoptosis has been investigated in two mouse lymphoma cell lines: line LY-as is radiation sensitive, displays substantial radiaton-induced apoptosis, and expresses low levels of Bcl-2; line LY-ar is radiation-resistant, displays a low apoptosis propensity, and expresses 30-fold higher amount of Bcl-2 protein than does the sensitive line. We observed that upon incubation in cystine/methionine-free (C/M-) medium, radiation-induced apoptosis in the LY-ar cells was restored to levels comparable to that seen in the LY-as cells...

A novel dynein-related transcript (designated DNEL1) from human adult testis has been identified that can encode a protein with a size of 91087 Da. The complete nucleotide sequence of the open reading frame is the first to be described for a human dynein-related gene. Northern blot analysis of mRNA from 16 different tissues has shown that DNEL1 is expressed specifically in testis. Analysis of somatic cell hybrids has mapped DNEL1 to Chromosome (Chr) 17. Analysis of a panel of 129 whole genome radiaton hybrid clones including 17q22-q25...

Most composite materials in dentistry used today, contain resins based on dimethacrylates. BIS-GMA [2,2-bis-(4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl)propane], the addition reaction product of bisphenol A and glycidyl methacrylate or an epoxy resin and methacrylic acid, is used most extensively. More recently, dimethacrylates based on bisphenol A, with various chain lengths have appeared on the market as a substitute for or in addition to BIS-GMA. Such compounds are BIS-MA [2,2-bis-(4-(methacryloxy)phenyl)propane], BIS-EMA [2,2-bis-(4-(2-methacryloxyethoxy)phenyl)propane] and BIS-PMA [2,2-bis-(4-(3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl)propane]...

Potential posttreatment complications for patients with the lymphomas and leukemia include: 1) impairment of growth and development in children, 2) CNS disturbances encompassing psychologic, intellectual and neurologic expressions, 3) gonadal effects--endocrine, reproductive, teratogenic and genetic, 4) dysfunction of other organs and structures, such as the thyroid, lung and heart and 5) oncogenesis. Many of these adversities are occasioned by radiation therapy, but chemotherapy also can be responsible for some long-term deleterious consequences...
