This case report discusses a rare occurrence of septic arthritis in the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) following SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced immunosuppression in a 94-year-old patient. Despite its rarity, the case underscores the importance of recognizing unusual manifestations of COVID-19, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers to consider COVID-19-induced immunosuppression in differential diagnoses. Swift diagnosis, surgical intervention, and appropriate antibiotics led to a favorable outcome, highlighting the significance of a multidisciplinary approach...

The analysis of the sternoclavicular joint holds significant importance in forensic anthropology, especially through the evaluation of medial clavicular ossification stage, which, however, is helpful only in subjects younger than 30 years of age. Given this limitation, the aim of the present work was to examine, through micro-CT, the surface of sternoclavicular joints of deceased individuals across various age groups, aiming to identify age-related degenerative changes applicable to age estimation in adults over 30 years old...

Clavicle fractures combined with sternoclavicular joint dislocations are very rare injuries that need to be addressed quickly and treated effectively due to the altered biomechanics of the shoulder girdle as well as to the potential damages to the surrounding "noble" anatomical structures. A diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for such injuries has not yet been established. Computer Tomography with 3D reconstruction should be the diagnostic gold standard. In case of a highly displaced fracture and/or dislocation in an active patient, surgical treatment is advised in order to obtain proper bone and joint healing with satisfactory functional outcomes as well as to protect the surrounding anatomical structures from potential damages...

PURPOSE: Evaluate the benefit of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]-fluoro-D-glucose ([18 F] FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for the therapeutic assessment of Abatacept (ABA) as first-line therapy in early-onset polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) patients. METHODS: This was an ancillary study of ALORS trial (Abatacept in earLy Onset polymyalgia Rheumatica Study) assessing the ability of ABA versus placebo to achieve low disease activity (C-Reactive Protein PMR activity score (CRP PMR-AS) ≤ to 10) without glucocorticoid (GC) at week 12 in patients with early-onset PMR...

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonographic examination of joints is a non-invasive method to detect and monitor Dialysis-associated amyloidosis (DRA). METHODS: An ultrasonographic examination of the sternoclavicular (SC) and shoulder joints was performed in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) and those with normal renal function in the control group. The maximum distance (D) of SC, the rotator cuff thickness (RCs), and the echogenic pads (EPs) of the shoulder were evaluated...

BACKGROUND: Controversies regarding the optimal internal fixation method for posterior sternoclavicular dislocation (SCD) exist. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of a new type of sternoclavicular hook plate for treating posterior SCD. METHODS: Eleven patients (eight men and three women) with posterior SCD who underwent treatment with the new sternoclavicular hook plate from June 2011 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients' ages ranged from 33 to 71 years (54...

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability of musculoskeletal radiologists to diagnose sternoclavicular joint injuries in the standard CT imaging planes compared to 3D volume rendered images to define the most accurate plane to improve prospective diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective query of our institutional database was performed. Twenty-six patients with a diagnosis of sternoclavicular joint injury, who had been evaluated with CT and treated by orthopedic surgery, and 30 control patients who did not have a sternoclavicular joint injury were included for analysis...

Sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis is rare and commonly associated with specific risk factors. We report the case of a 58-year-old female with no previous medical or surgical history who presented complaining of a warm, indurated mass overlying the right sternoclavicular joint. Computed tomography of the chest showed erosion of the sternal end of the clavicle and the manubrium sternum associated with thickening of the synovium and a sternoclavicular joint space narrowing, suggestive of an infective process...

More than 80% of adult manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injuries will experience shoulder pain. Females and those with decreased shoulder dynamics variability are more likely to experience pain in adulthood. Sex-related differences in shoulder dynamics variability during pediatric manual wheelchair propulsion may influence the lifetime risk of pain. We evaluated the influence of sex on 3-dimensional shoulder complex joint dynamics variability in 25 (12 females and 13 males) pediatric manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury...

Gonococcal septic arthritis is a rare condition that most frequently involves the interphalangeal joints of the hands, wrists, knees, and ankles. We report a case of monoarticular gonococcal septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint in the absence of pharyngeal or genitourinary symptoms in a patient with a history of arthropathy and intravenous drug use. This case report aims to describe the clinical features and management of gonococcal arthritis.

INDICATIONS: This case describes an acute epiphysiolysis of the medial clavicle Aitken type 0 with posterior dislocation. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Soft tissue infections within the region of the surgical access. Allergies against any materials used in the procedure...

OBJECTIVE: Injury to the sternoclavicular joint is a rare phenomenon that has implications for the shoulder complex. Limited literature exists on optimal physical therapy rehabilitation after a sternoclavicular ligament sprain. This case report details the physical therapy management and outcomes of a patient with a posterior sternoclavicular joint sprain. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 34-year-old female who sustained a grade I posteriorly directed sternoclavicular sprain during a motor vehicle accident...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A rare case of a fracture of the medial third of the clavicle on the basis of the "floating clavicle" was hereby reported. To the best of our knowledge, this complex clavicle fracture has not yet been published. This article aims to describe, for the first time, a case of the diagnosis and treatment of this special clavicle fracture. CASE PRESENTATION: The 26-year-old male patient suffered from a right sternoclavicular dislocation, a fracture of the right medial third of the clavicle, and a dislocation of the right acromioclavicular joint due to a car accident...

A 79-year-old man presented with fatigue and right shoulder pain. Computed tomography revealed right pleural effusion and osteosclerosis of the sternoclavicular joint. There were no signs of malignancy or infection in the pleural fluid studies. His bone scintigraphy exhibited the "bull's head sign." Despite the absence of skin lesions, he was diagnosed with synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome. Remission was achieved after treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral prednisolone...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of manual therapy to therapeutic exercise on shoulder pain, disability, and range of motion (ROM) in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS). METHODS: Sixty patients with SAIS were randomly assigned into the manual therapy (MT) and therapeutic exercise (TE) groups. Patients in the MT group were treated with joint mobilization, which was applied to the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular and scapulothoracic joints, and trigger point (TrP) inactivation using ischemic compression...
