Eight-seven acetabular fractures in eighty-seven patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation at Vanderbilt University Hospital from 1984 to 1989. Fifty-six were treated by orthopaedic traumatologists. Fifty-six patients returned for long-term follow-up (range 24-80 months, average 43). Harris hip ratings were used to clinically grade the results. Poor results were found in 43%. To determine what factors were important in final clinical results, we evaluated 145 patients admitted to Vanderbilt University Hospital with ankle fractures between January 1971 and December 1976. There was a strong correlation between anatomic results of reduction and final clinical results. Combined, single-stage anterior and posterior approaches for acute surgical management of cervical spine injury allows for early restoration of anatomic alignment and decompression. A review of 251 renal transplants done at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center since October 1962 revealed three patients who had suffered subsequent skeletal injuries sufficient to cause hospitalization. In a 37-year-old woman, a closed fracture of the pelvis healed satisfactorily in the usual period of time. In a 30-year-old man, closed fractures healed well, but there was prolonged delay in the healing of massive open wounds resulting from crushing injuries of the lower extremities.
