BACKGROUND: In Marfan syndrome early impairment of left ventricular systolic function has been reported. Our aim was to evaluate the left ventricular systolic function in young adults with Marfanoid habitus (MH) (includes arachnodactylia, dolichostenomelia, high palate, deformations of the thorax). METHODS: We studied 137 young subjects (mean age 21.3±1.5) - 58 male, 79 female. Transthoracic echocardiography (Vivid 7 Dimension, GE) was performed in 24 asymptomatic MH with excluded Marfan syndrome and 42 healthy control subjects...

INTRODUCTION: Sexual assault (SA) is alarmingly common and is associated with higher prevalence of psychiatric and medical conditions. However, many prior studies are limited to cross-sectional designs. Health care systems with electronic health records provide unique longitudinal data to examine whether SA is associated with changes in health and health care utilization. METHODS: The sample included 1350 Kaiser Permanente Northern California adult female patients with a SA diagnosis from 2009 to 2015 and 4050 adult female patients without a SA diagnosis, matched on age, medical facility, and continuous enrollment during the study period...

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is a recently described auto-immune and paraneoplastic encephalitis with prominent neuropsychiatric manifestations affecting young adults with ovarian teratoma. The availability of a novel assay to measure these antibodies might suggest an etiology for this potentially life-threatening disease, which if early recognized can be treated promptly with surgery with chances of a good clinical outcome. Reported prognostic indicators for a good outcome depend on the presence of a tumor, prompt treatment and no admission to an intensive care unit...

The popularity of alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) among young adults has spurred studies that focus on its links to aggression and risk-taking behaviors, including risky sex and sexual victimization. However, no studies to date have looked at the relationship between AmED and causes of interpersonal conflict in bars at the event level. The present study evaluated whether AmED use at the time of the bar conflict was associated with greater odds that a bar conflict would be precipitated by sexually related causes...

Urban areas include large numbers of adolescents (ages 15-19) and young adults (ages 20-24) who may have unmet sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs. Worldwide, adolescents contribute 11% of births, many of which are in low and middle-income countries. This study uses recently collected longitudinal data from urban Kenyan women to examine the association between targeted intervention activities and adolescents' SRH transitions. The focus was on a female adolescent (15-19) sample and their transition to first sex and first pregnancy/birth...

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) velocity measured in the middle cerebral artery (MCAV ) increases with finite kinetics during moderate intensity exercise and both the amplitude and dynamics of the response provide invaluable insights into the controlling mechanisms. The MCAV response following exercise onset is well fit to an exponential model in young individuals but remains to be characterized in their older counterparts. The responsiveness of vasomotor control degrades with advancing age, especially in skeletal muscle, and we tested the hypothesis that older subjects would evince a slower and reduced MCAV response to exercise...

Sex steroids play a major role in sexually dimorphic brain development during not only the perinatal period but also the pubertal period. We previously showed that, in male mice, the estrogen receptor-α ( Esr1 ) and aromatase ( Cyp19a1 ) genes are essential to the sexually dimorphic formation of the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) and the principal nucleus of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNSTp), but the estrogen receptor-β ( Esr2 ) gene is not necessary. We also showed that the androgen receptor ( Ar ) gene is essential to the sexually dimorphic formation of the BNSTp...

A young adult black female, known to be a prostitute and suspected of smuggling narcotics, was found dead in her apartment in a state of early decomposition. Oval-shaped gray-white masses of exogenous origin protruded from the anus. The autopsy showed dilatation of the folds of the large intestine, which were almost completely filled with these oval-shaped gray-white masses of foreign material. The uterus was enlarged with multiple large leiomyomas. Toxicological tests of blood and the foreign material revealed no toxicologically relevant substances...

Ethnic and sex variations in depressive symptoms and quality of life (QOL) among adolescent and young adult (AYA) childhood cancer survivors were explored among a sample of Latino and non-Latino childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) (n = 194) treated at hospitals in Los Angeles County. Latinos scored higher in depressive symptoms and lower in QOL when compared with non-Latinos. Males had higher depressive symptoms. Among Latinos, higher levels of acculturation were associated with depression and a poorer QOL, and we found that more acculturated Latino males were more likely to have meaningful levels of depression than less acculturated males or females...

Behavioural plasticity can be categorized into activational (also termed contextual) and developmental plasticity. Activational plasticity allows immediate contextual behavioural changes, whereas developmental plasticity is characterized by time-lagged changes based on memory of previous experiences (learning). Behavioural plasticity tends to decline with age but whether this holds true for both plasticity categories and the effects of first-in-life experiences is poorly understood. We tackled this issue by assessing the foraging plasticity of plant-inhabiting predatory mites, Amblyseius swirskii , on thrips and spider mites following age-dependent prey experience, i...

BACKGROUND: Endemic Burkitt's lymphoma is found predominantly in malaria holoendemic zones, typically in the tropical rain forest of Africa. It usually presents as an extra-nodal tumour in children and young adults with predilection for jaws and soft tissues of the abdomen. Clinical features depend on the primary tumour site, extent of the disease and histologic subtype. Acute blindness as a presentation sign is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13 year old African female presented to our facility with a 3 week history of painful abdominal distention, and loss of vision of the left eye...

Objective: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma- and stress-related psychiatric syndrome that occurs after exposure to extraordinary stressors. The neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) plays important roles in neurobiological processes like reward and stress, and a link between PTSD and the dopaminergic system has been reported. Thus, the investigation of an association between PTSD and gene-gene interaction (epistasis) within dopaminergic genes could uncover the genetic basis of dopamine-related PTSD symptomatology and contribute to precision medicine...
