Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) has the potential to revolutionise research in infectious diseases, as it has done with cancer. There is growing interest in it as a biomarker in the setting of early phase tuberculosis clinical trials, particularly given the limitations of current biomarkers as adequate predictors of sterilizing cure for tuberculosis. PET-CT is a real-time tool that provides a three-dimensional view of the spatial distribution of tuberculosis within the lung parenchyma and the nature of lesions with uptake (i...

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy is a malignancy-related complication with rapid progression and high mortality. To improve the understanding of the disease, early diagnosis and treatment are key to successful treatment. A 39-year-old patient with pulmonary hypertension transferred from another hospital was admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University on September 26, 2021. The patient developed shortness of breath and progressive exacerbation over the past month. No pulmonary artery embolism was seen on computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) at the outside hospital where the breast cancer was diagnosed...

Introduction. There is emerging evidence of a potential role for PET-CT scan as an imaging biomarker to characterise the spectrum of tuberculosis infection (TBI) in humans and animal models. Gap Statement. Synthesis of available evidence from current literature is needed to understand the utility of PET-CT for characterising TBI and how this may inform application of PET-CT in future TBI research. Aim. The aims of this review are to summarise the evidence of PET-CT scan use in immunocompetent hosts with TBI, and compare PET-CT features observed in humans and animal models...

Silicosis caused by the inhalation/deposition of free silica particles is characterized by pulmonary inflammation/fibrosis. Among the clinical disorders associated with silicosis, tuberculosis is by far the most prominent. A 66-year-old male non-smoker, originally from North Africa, reported a dry cough and significant weight loss. He was a foundry worker. He had a medical history of bladder carcinoma associated with schistosomiasis. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT showed bilateral multiple hypermetabolic lung nodules, some with cavitation...

The presence of lung metastases in patients with primary malignancies is an important criterion for treatment management and prognostication. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest is the preferred method to detect lung metastasis. However, CT has limited efficacy in differentiating metastatic nodules from benign nodules (e.g., granulomas due to tuberculosis) especially at early stages (<5 mm). There is also a significant subjectivity associated in making this distinction, leading to frequent CT follow-ups and additional radiation exposure along with financial and emotional burden to the patients and family...

The special blood circulation, anatomy, and tissue structure of the spine may lead to significant differences in pathological features and drug resistance between spinal tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis. Here, we collected 168 spinal tuberculosis cases and 207 pulmonary tuberculosis cases, and compared their clinical and pathological features as well as drug resistance. From the anatomical location, the highest incidence was of lumbar tuberculosis, followed by thoracic tuberculosis. PET-CT scans showed increased FDG uptake in the diseased vertebrae, discernible peripheral soft tissue shadow, visible internal capsular shadow, and an abnormal increase in FDG uptake...

BACKGROUND: The evolution of tuberculosis (TB) disease during the clinical latency period remains incompletely understood. METHODS: 250 HIV-uninfected, adult household contacts of rifampicin-resistant TB with a negative symptom screen underwent baseline 18 F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission and computed tomography (PET/CT), repeated in 112 after 5-15 months. Following South African and WHO guidelines, participants did not receive preventive therapy. All participants had intensive baseline screening with spontaneous, followed by induced, sputum sampling and were then observed for an average of 4...

Tuberculosis (TB) is currently the world's leading cause of infectious mortality. Infective complications are common after renal transplantation. TB is one of the leading infections following renal transplantation; however, TB affecting the transplanted kidney is a rare presentation. Reactivation of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the most common mode of infection. The use of immunosuppressive agents such as cyclosporin, azathioprine, and steroids advance the onset of TB to an earlier date which most often presents as a fever or pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO)...

Chest CT showed the nodule was lobulated measuring 24 mm×23 mm, with obvious enhancement and adjacent pleural traction. Grossly, the mass was adjacent to the pleural area with indistinct boundary. On cut sections, the lesion was solid and tough, with a greyish-pink colour...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) PET/CT multi-time points imaging (MTPI) on the differential diagnosis between lung cancer (LC) and tuberculosis (TB). METHODS: Sixty-four patients underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT MTPI. However, these foci of abnormal activity were later proven due to newly developed tuberculosis after CAR T-cell therapy.

REVIEW

Radiolabeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) has been introduced as a promising PET tracer for imaging of pancreatic cancer. To date, FAPI PET/computed tomography (CT) has generally but not universally yielded higher radiotracer uptake and tumor-to-background contrast than 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT in primary tumors, involved lymph nodes, and visceral metastases. It may also be useful for the evaluation of the tumor response to chemotherapy. However, increased FAPI uptake may be observed in benign conditions, including pancreatitis, pancreatic tuberculosis, IgG4-related disease, and serous cystadenoma, and therefore, clinical, radiological, and pathological correlations are required...
