With multimorbidity on the rise, adverse cutaneous drug reactions are becoming a daily challenge in clinical practice. The objective evaluation of the skin lesion is crucial but hardly realized due to missing technology and guidelines. In this study, the novel Dermus SkinScanner-U, an optically guided high-frequency ultrasound imaging device, was evaluated regarding its comparability with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the pharmacological analysis of the patients' drug therapy. A total of 40 adult patients were evaluated, all with chronic medication use and skin lesions that led to non-compliance toward the pharmacotherapy...

INTRODUCTION: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a primary lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia that represents a form of follicular lichen planus. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of coexisting diffuse LPP and female pattern hair loss masquerading as diffuse alopecia areata in a 32-year-old female. DISCUSSION: In complex cases such as this, dermoscopy-guided vertical and horizontal biopsies from androgen sensitive and insensitive areas are helpful in increasing diagnostic yield...

INTRODUCTION: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommendations for adjuvant radiation therapy (ART) use are similar for High Risk and Very High Risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) with negative post-surgical margins. Although studies report reductions in disease progression following ART treatment, ART use is likely inconsistent when guided by available risk factors. This study evaluated the association of ART with clinical risk factors in ART-treated and untreated patients and showed the clinical utility of the 40-gene expression profile (40-GEP) for guiding ART...

BACKGROUND: In the realm of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized treatment paradigms. Despite their effectiveness, the comprehensive safety profile of these therapies remains inadequately explored. This network meta-analysis aims to comparing the safety profiles of ICI-based treatments in mRCC, offering vital insights that could lead to the optimization of treatment strategies and improvement of patient care...

Congenital ichthyoses (CI) comprise a heterogeneous group of monogenic genetic skin diseases characterized by diffuse scaling, often associated with skin inflammation. Diagnosis of the individual form of ichthyosis is complex and is guided by clinical expertise. CI usually has a major impact on quality of life (QOL) and thus requires lifelong treatment. To date, there are no curative therapies, although various symptomatic treatment options exist. The present protocol for the management of CI has been drawn up in accordance with the recommendations published in 2012 by the French National Authority for Health, based on a literature review, with the help and validation of members of the French network for rare skin diseases (FIMARAD)...

BACKGROUND: Drug survival, which refers to the time from treatment initiation to discontinuation, provides a surrogate measure of the effectiveness of a biologic in a real-world setting (J Invest Dermatol, 2015, 135, 1). The aim of this study was to determine the drug survival of biologics that are currently available in Australia. We also analysed the treatment efficacy of these biologics and reasons for discontinuation. METHODS: Retrospective data from outpatient Dermatology biologic clinics in Westmead Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Sydney, Australia) from April 2006 to December 2020 were collected...

Timely intervention reduces the risk of a poor prognosis in hand eczema, making early recognition of symptoms important in high-risk professions. However, limited data exist regarding the ability of cleaners and healthcare workers to recognize hand eczema. The aim of this study was to examine cleaners' and healthcare workers' ability to recognize hand eczema in clinical photographs and to assess the severity of the disease. Cleaners and healthcare workers completed a questionnaire consisting of 16 questions and participated in a structured interview referring to a validated photographic severity guide for chronic hand eczema, which comprised clinical photographs of hand eczema at varying levels of severity...

Bruising rarely presents in infants younger than 9 months who are not ambulatory and is more prevalent among children beginning to walk, or "cruisers." We present the case of a healthy 3-month-old infant with asymptomatic, symmetric, bilateral, large bruises on the bony chest sparing the mid-chest/sternum with a negative non-accidental trauma work-up. The noted pattern of bruises matched the bilateral shoulder straps of a 5-point harness of the car seat belt designed for infants. Awareness of this unique pattern of bruises will help elicit a better-informed history to guide care in an appropriate setting...

Purpose: Trichodysplasia spinulosa (TS) is a rare, disfiguring skin condition which presents with widespread asymptomatic or pruritic, skin-colored papules with white protruding keratin spiculations in immunocompromised individuals. Due to its rarity, there is little data to guide treatment decisions. The purpose of this article is to report a case of TS that completely resolved after treatment with topical cidofovir. Materials and methods: A 19-year-old immunosuppressed female presented with widespread painful, itchy bumps on the nose and face...

Topical corticosteroids, topical steroid-sparing agents, and emollients are all used to treat atopic dermatitis. However, there are no formal guidelines dictating the order and timing in which these topical modalities should be applied. Additionally, the order of application may change drug absorption, efficacy, and distribution. This is especially important for patients with atopic dermatitis. These patients have a dysfunctional skin barrier, which can lead to greater systemic absorption of drugs. Moreover, children already have an increased rate of systemic absorption due to a higher ratio of body surface area to body weight...

The nipple-areolar complex (NAC), a unique anatomic structure of the breast, encompasses the terminal intramammary ducts and skin appendages. Several benign and malignant diseases can arise within the NAC. As several conditions have overlapping symptoms and imaging findings, understanding the distinctive nipple anatomy, as well as the clinical and imaging features of each NAC disease process, is essential. A multimodality imaging approach is optimal in the presence or absence of clinical symptoms. The authors review the ductal anatomy and anomalies, including congenital abnormalities and nipple retraction...

Melanomas arise de novo or in the context of a precursor lesion. Lesions typically grow radially and then undergo a vertical growth phase proceeding to local invasion and metastasis. This review describes the utility of different imaging modalities in diagnosis and melanocytic lesion monitoring. A literature search was performed in November 2023 utilizing EMBASE, Medline, and PubMed. The PRISMA diagram demonstrates the review process. BACKGROUND: Western diets, characterized by a high glycemic index and dairy content, can be risk factors for acne vulgaris. A few studies have suggested that adherence to non-Western diets, such as the Mediterranean diet (MD), may be protective against acne. This study aimed to explore the relationships between adherence to the MD and acne diagnosis and severity. METHODS: This was a matched case‒control study carried out among university students studying health sciences to explore the relationship between adhering to the MD and an acne diagnosis...

The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases has been on the rise in our setting for decades. These infections represent not only an individual problem, but also a problem of public health. Therefore, the management of STDs involves reducing community incidence, which means that common issues in the clinical practice such as failure to attend may become a more complex problem, which adds to the difficult and delicate task of locating sexual contacts that would benefit from screening and the appropriate treatment...
