Left-sided or segmental portal hypertension (SPHT) is a rare entity, most often associated with pancreatic disease or antecedent pancreatic surgery. The starting point is splenic vein obstruction secondary to local inflammation or, less often, extrinsic compression. SPHT leads to splenomegaly and development of collateral porto-systemic venous circulation. SPHT should be suspected in patients with pancreatic history who present with episodic upper gastrointestinal bleeding and splenomegaly with normal liver function tests...

Various 3-dimensional (3D) models of hepatocytes (HCs) have been established to assess liver functions in vitro. Contribution of the hepatic non-parenchymal cells (NPCs), however, is largely neglected in these models. Here, we report a comparative study of hepatic spheroids generated from freshly isolated mouse whole liver cells (WLCs) and HCs (referred to as SphWLC and SphHC, respectively). We found that HC differentiation was preserved better in SphWLC than in SphHC, and when cocultured with liver tumor spheroids (SphT), SphWLC showed a more potent suppression on SphT growth compared to SphHC...

The sphenoidal tubercle (SphT), also known as pyramidal tubercle or infratemporal spine projects from the anterior end of the infratemporal crest of the greater sphenoidal wing. As it masquerades the lateral entrance in the pterygopalatine fossa it could obstruct surgical corridors or the access for anaesthetic punctures. The SphT is, however, an overlooked structure in the anatomical literature. During a routine cone beam computed tomography study in an adult male patient we found bilateral giant SphTs transforming the infratemporal surfaces of the greater wing into veritable pterygoid foveae...

BACKGROUND: Poor communication during patient handover is recognised internationally as a root cause of a significant proportion of preventable deaths. Improving the accuracy and quality of handover may reduce associated mortality and morbidity. Although the practice of handover between Ambulance and Emergency Department clinicians has received some attention over recent years there is little evidence to support handover best practice within the prehospital domain. Further research is therefore urgently required to understand the most appropriate way to deliver clinical information exchange in the pre-hospital environment...

Metallic nanoparticles are major concern, particularly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in various applications. In the present investigation, we report a novel strategy with biological approach for synthesis of AgNPs using sodium para-hydroxybenzoate tetrahydrate (SPHT) isolated from Vitex negundo leaves. The synthesized SPHT-AgNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis...

The unexpressed cry2Ab27 gene of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. aizawai SP41 (SP41) consists of a single open reading frame (ORF) of 1902bp encoding for 634 amino acid residues. The cry2Ab27 gene appears to be silent due to the lack of promoter and terminator sequences. In this study we fused the cry2Ab27 ORF with the cry1Ab promoter (500bp) and the terminator (300bp) in vector pHT304-18Z in order to drive the expression of cry2Ab27 in both SP41 and an acrystaliferous, B. thuringiensis subsp. thuringiensis 407 (407)...

BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in patients on hemodialysis is strongly associated with cardio-vascular morbidity and mortality. Treatment of SHPT with cinacalcet decreases circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations and lowers serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations. Therefore, we investigated the cardiovascular effects of cinacalcet in hemodialysis patients with SHPT. METHODS: We studied 12 hemodialysis patients with SPHT [serum intact PTH (iPTH) >300 pg/ml]...

The diversity of prokaryotes inhabiting solar saltern ponds was determined by thermal melting and reassociation of community DNA. These measurements were compared with fingerprinting techniques such as terminal restriction fragment length polymorphisms (T-RFLP) analysis, denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and cloning and sequencing approaches. Three ponds with salinities of 22, 32, and 37% (NaCl saturation) were studied. The combination of independent molecular techniques to estimate the total genetic diversity provided a realistic assessment to reveal the microbial diversity in these environments...

Bacterial and archaeal assemblages have been studied in a multipond solar saltern using a range of microbial ecology techniques by four laboratories simultaneously. These include 16S rDNA sequencing from both denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone libraries, and culturing methods. Water samples from eight ponds were analysed, covering a salinity range from near sea water (4% salt) to saturated sodium chloride (37% salt; ponds called crystallizers). Clone libraries focused on ponds with salinity of 8%, 22% and 32%...

The culturable haloarchaeal diversity in a crystallizer pond from a solar saltern has been analyzed and compared with the biodiversity directly retrieved by analysis of rRNA genes amplified from the environment. Two different sets of culture conditions have been assayed: solid medium with yeast extract as carbon source and liquid media with either yeast extract or a mixture of fishmeal, Spirulina sp., and Artemia salina. Seventeen colonies grown on plates with yeast extract incubated at 30 degrees C were analyzed by 16S rDNA partial sequencing...

A fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) protocol suitable for the identification of prokaryotes inhabiting hypersaline environments was developed and applied to several crystallizer ponds with salinities above 36% from a multipond solar saltern in Alicante, Spain. Two morphotypes were abundant in these environments: rods and square or square-like prokaryotes that could be affiliated to Bacteria and Archaea, respectively, by FISH with domain-specific probes. FISH with a newly designed probe proved that the archaeal 16S rDNA sequence most frequently recovered from the crystallizers, SPhT, originated from the dominant square-like prokaryotes...

This article investigates the suitability of SPHT for the detection and localization of 511 keV gammas emitted from 18F without coincidence detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A standard SPH collimator and the table were additionally shielded with lead. For comparison, point sources and cardiac phantoms were imaged on SPHT and a triple head gamma camera (THC)...
