Selenium is an essential mineral yet both deficiency and excess are associated with adverse health effects. Dietary intake of Se in humans varies greatly between populations due to food availability, dietary preferences, and local geological and ecosystem processes impacting Se accumulation into agricultural products and animal populations. We argue there is a need to evaluate and reconsider the relevance of public health recommendations on Se given recent evidence, including the metabolic pathways and health implications of Se...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of dietary deficiency and supplementation of calcium, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese or selenium on minerals content in the longissimus dorsi (LD), biceps femoris (BF) and triceps brachii (TB) of grazing Mongolian sheep. METHODS: We randomly divided 98 sheep into 7 treatment groups and fed them specific diets for 60 days: a total mineral nutrition diet (LCG), a calcium deficiency diet (LCa), a zinc deficiency diet (LZn), a copper deficiency diet (LCu), a cobalt deficiency diet (LCo), a manganese deficiency diet (LMn) and a selenium deficiency diet (LSe)...

In the Northern Great Plains, cattle may be exposed to water with elevated sulfate concentrations resulting in ruminal hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production and risk of copper deficiency. There are currently few strategies available to help mitigate effects arising from high sulfate water. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding a moderate forage diet with or without bismuth subsalicylate (BSS; 0.0 vs. 0.4% DM basis) when provided water with a low (LS; 346 ± 13) or high (HS; 4,778 ± 263 mg/L) sulfate concentration on feed and water intake, ruminal H2S concentration, and liver and serum trace mineral concentrations...

Mercury-bearing nano-mineral assemblages (Hg-NMAs) are chemically and mineralogically heterogeneous, micrometer-sized aggregates of nanoparticles (NPs) found in contaminated soils and sediments. Although these NMAs control sequestration and release of Hg that is a global contaminant, our understanding is limited with respect to the conditions of different types of Hg-NMAs, the diversity of its minerals, the size distribution of its NPs and whether mineral replacement and alteration reactions in these NMAs result in the release of Hg-bearing NPs...

BACKGROUND: Vegan diets have recently gained popularity in Switzerland as well as globally. The aim of the present study was to develop a diet quality score for vegans (DQS-V) based on the Swiss dietary recommendations for vegans. METHODS: The dataset included 52 healthy vegan adults. Dietary intake data were assessed by three-day weighed food records. Body weight and height were measured, and a venous blood sample for the analysis of vitamin and mineral status was collected...

Selenium constitutes an essential trace element for the human body. Moderate Se intake plays a pivotal role in preserving overall health. The absorption of Se by plants is primarily influenced by the available Se levels in soils, rather than by the soil total Se content, offering potential for exploring Se-rich crops in Se-deficient regions. In this study, we explore the factors influencing the Se bioaccumulation coefficient in corn based on a land quality geochemical survey at a 1:50,000 scale and establish predictive models for corn seed Se content using random forest and multiple linear regression approaches...

Selenium (Se) is a mineral that is often used as a dietary supplement. Its deficiency has been associated with fertility disorders, as well as imbalances and inhibition of the immune system. This study aimed to estimate the role of organic selenium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae  in improving kids' status, health, and physiological conditions. In total, 10 goat kids at seven days were used, with an average started life body weight (b.wt.) of 4±0.2 kg, and they were divided into two groups. Group 1 (G1) was treated with Se-fortified yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae +Se) with a dose (30 mg/kg) of body weight...

The interplay between probiotics and mineral absorption is a topic of growing interest due to its great potential for human well-being. Minerals are vital in various physiological processes, and deficiencies can lead to significant health problems. Probiotics, beneficial microorganisms residing in the gut, have recently gained attention for their ability to modulate mineral absorption and mitigate deficiencies. The aim of the present review is to investigate the intricate connection between probiotics and the absorption of key minerals such as calcium, selenium, zinc, magnesium, and potassium...

We report a case of a 72-year-old woman who developed recurrent abdominal laparotomy wound dehiscence and infection following a hepatico-jejunostomy. Her surgical history included a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) that was carried out 11 years ago. Upon further assessment in the current admission, she was found to be deficient in both selenium and zinc. Daily multivitamin and mineral tablets and a nutritional supplement drink were prescribed to address her deficiencies. After 2 months of supplementation, the laparotomy wound had made significant healing progress and no further surgical input was required...

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of obesity has become a major health problem worldwide. The causes of obesity are multifactorial and could be influenced by dietary patterns and genetic factors. Obesity has been associated with a decrease in micronutrient intake and consequently decreased blood concentrations. Selenium is an essential micronutrient for human health, and its metabolism could be affected by obesity, especially severe obesity. This study aimed to identify differential methylation genes associated with serum selenium concentration in women with and without obesity...

Influence of supplementation of selenium (Se, 1 and 5 µM) and silicon (Si, 0.1 and 0.5 mM) was investigated in wheat under arsenic (30 µM As) stress. Plants grown under As stress exhibited a significant decline in growth parameters however, Se and Si supplementation mitigated the decline significantly. Treatment of Se and Si alleviated the reduction in the intermediate components of chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway and the content of photosynthetic pigments. Arsenic stressed plants exhibited increased reactive oxygen species accumulation and the NADPH oxidase activity which were lowered significantly due to Se and Si treatments...
