The structure and configuration of reaction centers, which dominantly govern the catalytic behaviors, often undergo dynamic transformations under reaction conditions, yet little is known about how to exploit these features to favor the catalytic functions. Here, we demonstrate a facile light activation strategy over a TiO2 -supported Cu catalyst to regulate the dynamic restructuring of Cu active sites during low-temperature methanol steam reforming. Under illumination, the thermally deactivated Cu/TiO2 undergoes structural restoration from inoperative Cu2 O to the originally active metallic Cu caused by photoexcited charge carriers from TiO2 , thereby leading to substantially enhanced activity and stability...

Background Proximal humerus fractures comprise nearly 4%-5% of all fracture types and nearly 25% of fracture humerus. These fractures are commonly seen in the elderly population (people aged 60 years or more). The best way to treat elderly people who have three- or four-part fractures of the proximal humerus is debatable, with many in favour of prosthetic humeral head replacements. This study aimed to assess the functional outcome of proximal humerus fractures managed with a proximal humerus locking plate and to investigate the incidence of complications in these patients...

This paper explores the relations between light and dark/white and black disclosed in a study of Gartnavel Royal Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, where an old Victorian lunatic asylum remains, if becoming ruined, on the same site as a modern mental healthcare campus. In-depth interview work recovering the 'spatial stories' of patients and staff, past and present, reveals a complex mixture of positive and negative memories and interpretations prompted by both the 'darkened spaces' of Old Gartnavel and the liveliness associated with both sets of spaces...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Plastic reconstructive surgery for defects of hand still pose a challenge to plastic surgeons. The skin envelope of the hand is a complex structure that not only covers the underlying tissues but also includes particular functional and sensory components. The main principle of therapy is to provide adequate and long-lasting coverage to minimize surgery scars. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63 years old man was referred to our hospital from another facility with a soft tissue defect on his right index finger at the level of the interphalangeal joint...

BACKGROUND: Varus collapse is one of the pivotal mechanisms of failure following surgical fixation of proximal humerus fractures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate functional and radiological outcomes of non-vascularized fibular autograft as medial support with locking plate construct for comminuted proximal humerus fractures (PHF's). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 18 patients with unstable PHF's in the age group 50-70 years with a minimum follow-up of two years...

Explaining the emergence of individuality in the process of evolution remains a challenge; it faces the difficulty of characterizing adequately what 'emergence' amounts to. Here, I present a pragmatic account of individuality in which I take up this challenge. Following this account, individuals that emerge from an evolutionary transition in individuality are coarse-grained entities: entities that are summaries of lower-level evolutionary processes. Although this account may prima facie appear to ultimately rely on epistemic considerations, I show that it can be used to vindicate the emergence of individuals in a quasi-ontological sense...

Endurance exercise can disturb intestinal epithelial integrity, leading to increased systemic indicators of cell injury, hyperpermeability, and pathogenic translocation. However, the interaction between exercise, diet, and gastrointestinal disturbance still warrants exploration. This study examined whether a 6-day dietary intervention influenced perturbations to intestinal epithelial disruption in response to a 25-km race walk. Twenty-eight male race walkers adhered to a high carbohydrate (CHO)/energy diet (65% CHO, energy availability = 40 kcal·kg FFM-1·day-1) for 6 days prior to a Baseline 25-km race walk...

PURPOSE: The primary objective of our study was to determine how lowering a P value threshold from 0.05 to 0.005 would affect the statistical significance of previously published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in major anesthesiology journals. METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for studies electronically published in 2020 within three major general anesthesiology journals as indexed by both Google Metrics and Scimago Journal & Country Rank. Studies included were RCTs published in 2020 in Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesia, and the British Journal of Anaesthesia; had a primary endpoint, and used a P value threshold to determine the effect of the intervention...

Our previous work identified compound 1 (SLU-2633) as a potent lead compound toward the identification of a novel treatment for cryptosporidiosis, caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium (EC50 = 0.17 μM). While this compound is potent and orally efficacious, the mechanism of action and biological target(s) of this series are currently unknown. In this study, we synthesized 70 compounds to develop phenotypic structure-activity relationships around the aryl "tail" group. In this process, we found that 2-substituted compounds are inactive, confirmed that electron withdrawing groups are preferred over electron donating groups, and that fluorine plays a remarkable role in the potency of these compounds...

A library of 34 lipophilic sulfonamides based upon the memantine core has been synthesized to identify potential drug candidates to cross the blood-brain barrier and target glioblastoma. The library was screened for in vitro activity against 4 mammalian cell lines, including U-87 (glioblastoma). Additional synthetic variation of the active compounds has validated the importance of specific regions of the pharmacophore, with the sulfonamide functionality and S-aryl unit displaying the most significant impact...

In the middle of the twentieth century, physiologists interested in human biological rhythms undertook a series of field experiments in natural spaces that they believed could closely approximate conditions of biological timelessness. With the field of rhythms research was still largely on the fringes of the life sciences, natural spaces seemed to offer unique research opportunities beyond what was available to physiologists in laboratory spaces. In particular, subterranean caves and the High Arctic became archetypal 'natural laboratories' for the study of human circadian (daily) rhythms...

This gave rise to a theoretical discussion about broad medico-philosophical questions such as (among other things) the concept of pharmaceuticalisation. TenA thiamin-degrading enzymes are commonly found in prokaryotes, plants, fungi and algae and are involved in the thiamin salvage pathway. The gut symbiont Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt) produces a TenA protein (BtTenA) which is packaged into its extracellular vesicles. An alignment of BtTenA protein sequence with proteins from different databases using the basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) and the generation of a phylogenetic tree revealed that BtTenA is related to TenA-like proteins not only found in a small number of intestinal bacterial species but also in some aquatic bacteria, aquatic invertebrates, and freshwater fish...

Although the shoulder is one of the most commonly dislocated joints in the body, bilateral gleno-humeral joint dislocation is considered rare. This article uses content and thematic analyses to examine how UK public service broadcasting (PSB) reported on the Covid-19 pandemic prior to the first lockdown on March 23, 2020. This was a period when the British government's response to the pandemic was being heavily criticised by the World Health Organisation and other parts of the scientific community. This paper finds that in PSB these criticisms were muted and partially given. Instead, broadcasting explained in detail-and directly endorsed-government policy, including the 'herd immunity' approach...
